I haven’t seen the episode since I was a kid, but if I remember, Ash was having trouble beating a trainer’s Raichu. He wanted to evolve Pikachu but Pikachu didn’t want to. They then realized the other trainer never let their Pikachu learn quick attack before it evolved into Raichu, and that’s how Ash’s Pikachu got an advantage over it.

A theory I read about charmander was that since it previously belonged to another trainer ash got a traded pokemon. In the games traded pokemon if too high a level don't listen to you so it's likely Ash was too weak to control it.

If Pikachu can defeat pokemon like Mega-Lucario or Regice, Raichu should be capaible of defeating pokemon like Mewtwo or Mega-Latias/Mega-Latios, and yet he's shown to lose repetivly, even to unevolved pokemon. Raichu isn't bad, he's just unlucky that he need to look bad for Pikachu to look good. Also, Raichu and Alolan Raichu with 'Raising Voltage' move rock on electric terrain. They finally gets to shine competitivly after so many years.

Wrong, I'm 26 and I grew up with first generation of pokemon. I can tell you that at that time pikachu has always been the face of pokemon. At that time there was a pokemon episode explaining why pikachu didn't want to evolve. Cant remember the episode but the point is that they already had planned to never evolve ashes pikachu from the get go. It has nothing to do with marketing. I understand that newer generation of kids will think otherwise tho.

The tension was non existent though. Did people actually believe Ash's Pikachu would evolve? Long time fans already know the situation with Pikachu and evolution during the section with Lt surge and even newer viewers could tell that Pikachu isn't going anywhere since, you know, mascot. Pokémon has been predictable for years. The only thing that was remotely surprising was when Ash finally won the league.

If he did it at the last episode, it would be meaningless, because those who like Raichu would never see him get any cool moments. Pikachu over hundred of episodes defeated legendary and mega-evolved pokemon in 1vs1 fight, so it would be mean if he evolved and not get to defeat opponents even stronger than those he beat as Pikachu. So I disagree with you. I can understand him evolving in last season to help Ash overcome a challenge he wouldn't as a Pikachu, but certainly not in the final episode.

I'd assume Pikachu is at least lvl.60 by now, perhaps even 100. It just seems like a cop out to me. As a kid I thought Pikachu should have evolved at the end of Ruby and Sapphire.
