Chat has been tormenting Pikamee for 3 months on this question. She finally gets an answer. 天野ピカミィ. Pikamee RU-vid : / @pikamee Twitter : / amanopikamee
I love that Pika is the bridge between the Japanese viewers and the English viewers. It's like we're in two seperate cells of an insane asylum, and she's the warden that's acting as the messenger.
She is the reason why Hololive and Nijisanji started to hire english speaking Vtubers. Pikamee has more subs and donations than her two friends combined. Also, viewers in western countries are more generous. $100 donations are not uncommon. Japanese viewers are more frugal coz majority are still schoolkids.
I think Pika only being 90% fluent in English is why her conversing in English is so funny. She's like an unspoiled baby with little knowledge when it comes to Western memes and jokes. And then she just starts dropping F-bombs when she gets mad.
And the funniest part of she getting mad is that the angrier she gets, the better her english pronunciation gets (Sorry if there are typos, english isn't my first language)
I don't know if this was the motivation behind it but in the show what we do in the shadows there is an annoying emotional vampire that feeds on human life force by annoying them and he used this joke in the show.
This is the perfect ending to this saga. She doesn't get the joke, even when it's explained to her, and continues the Chaotic Neutral energy right up to the end. I'm satisfied.
So here's a bit of cultural context for Pikamee and yall here. The reason why she was confused is that in Japanese, calling someone "dog" is actually an insult. We however just say "dog" or "dawg" as a sign of endearment to our friends.
I mean, bitch is a term for a female dog, so it’s understandable that most languages typically infer negativity from associating people with dogs giving the connotations with their subservience and all. (Dog of the government etcetera)
The fact that she got to the level of fluency where she sounds like a native speaker but then has never heard something as simple as "what's up, dog?" before is so fascinating.
i love how whenever chat responds with "nothing much, how bout you?" pikamee responds with the same "oh, how about you?" in the same tone over and over
I love that after she clarified it means "friend" all the Japanese viewers start spamming "wan, wan" lol it's so cute. I love understanding others cultures and that we can joke with them in the same fashion
This girl has like the perfect American accent, while still having a perfect Japanese one, too. It's like flipping a switch from on to off. P.S.: There's actually a brand of vegan hotdogs named Updog. So now Updog is a real thing.
@Capitalist Monkey Why eat Panda Express when you can get authentic Chinese food? Why eat US styled Pizza when you can have the original Italian Pizza? Why eat out when you can just make food at home? Let people eat whatever they want my dude. There's no unwritten rule that you should eat the original of something or whatnot.
@Capitalist Monkey gotta disagree with that one, diet coke just sucks because aspartame doesn't have the same sweetness as sugar, but I've had "meatless meat" that's pretty much the same as normal meat.
Pika is a good example of having a decent grasp on textbook English. But not understanding a lot of the informal language we actually use in day to day conversation. What that means is she is vulnerable to the cheesiest of jokes.
i honestly thought Pikamee was a native english speaker and just now checked her about channel tab and realized i am wrong... she sounds so natural i love it, also her japanese voice sounds like that type of anime girl thats super out going and always has a fun time regardless of the situation, yall know what im talking about.
I miss early day Pikamee. Probably the only Vtuber I would watch live. Never felt the same as she evolved and had the costume change , and then transferred over to Henya
To be fair it's "dawg" which is slang for a homie or someone you regularly spend your free time with aka a friend so it would be You "Sup, dawg" Homie replies "Not much. How bout'chu?" Only urbanites in their 40s+ would still be talking like that today.
O God in heaven bless you, I needed this so much right now after last night. You do not know how much stress you just took off my shoulders and my heart.
I really like vtubers because such jokes become a pure chaotic joke and no one gets offended. They just become chaos too, like an infection spreading to each other and acting the same thing. Lol
Ah yes, the quintessential 90s greeting. It's interesting to think that it's not really used anymore except as a cultural reference, I wonder if zoomers have just never heard it outside of films. Then again, this might just be Pikamee being Pikamee.
