Couple of things i missed out. If you're wanting to use gloves make sure they SAFE for the fish. By that i mean get them from a fishing brand like my abu garcia ones in the video. They are made with fish care in mind. DONT use gardening gloves, welding gloves, or medieval chainmail gauntlet these can cause damage to the gills preventing them from extracting oxygen from the water. They can also take the protective slime from the fish. Last but not least use common sense. If you're fishing anywhere urban or without grass banks make sure you take a landing mat. I see too many idiots unhooking pike in the middle of the canal towpath THIS KILLS FISH. Many thanks for watching and tight lines.

So true! I hate seeing people dead bait and let their float go for about 30-45 seconds before striking. I’ve seen experienced anglers doing this too

I'm new to the pike fishing, I've had lots of Jacks that have been deeply hooked because I was told by other anglers to let them run with the bait for a bit. But seeing you do your thing I have to say it's the better way. Nice one for putting the video up,,, massive help👍 and all the best with your fishing🤜🤛

A long time ago I was shown how to unhook a pike, over the years I have caught a lot of pike. I get annoyed when I catch pike with other peoples hooks still in them. Your video will stop this happening. I have many times helped young anglers who have not got a clue.. many times pike get there own back and I think a lot of anglers are frightened of pike. Keep up the good work.!!

What a fantastic upload, like me, I'm sure this will be of utmost importance to anyone about to take up Pike, or any other predator fishing. Although I have a few decades of angling experience, I have never specifically targeted Pike, but it is something I am about to embark on, so, this couldn't have come at a more appropriate time. Great tutorial, I've recently picked up fishing for predatory fish as it gives me a more active way of fishing and i can do it if i only got an hour or so after work before dark like winter time. However i've opted to go with micro baits and ultra light rods in the hope to avoid Pike and target the smaller species like perch to avoid having to deal with the large mouth and teeth. I feel more confident now to try and get into pike fishing or use in-between bait size to go for smaller pike / bigger perch to get a feel for it.

Nice one Chris. Awesome advice and demo there. I've argued this with many people - the conclusion I've come to(and someone said it outright to me once) is that some peoples first priority is to hook and land the fish. Last thing on their mind is fish safety. It's similar to the barbed vs barbless hook debates. I've fished since the 70's and I can't remember many missed Pike by striking early and I can never blame barbless hooks on losing a fish. It's usually very small fish that come off barbless hooks - the big ones don't.

I caught my first dead bait pike on circle hooks, hooked perfectly in the scissor and zero stress in hooking !, would to totally recommend to someone who’s starting, if your using something roach sized, I hook through the back so that it doesn’t swallow one side more than the other. thanks mate, top tips

I don't pike Fish, but think of those Fish that have been caught by people that don't know how to unhook properly and the animals are left with hooks in their throats and bellys. If you enjoy fishing understand they are animals not throw away objects you bought on eBay 😊 .

i bought this cool hook puller tool for deep hooks. i had some deep hooks last year in some bass, fingers could not reach , pliers where injuring the fish and not giving the proper leverage. and fish were out of water way too long so the new tool is a win

Great tips and video dude this was very helpful, if im honest it would be great to see you unhook lots of differently hooked pike too, I've had one before where both treble were in the mouth and one hook was in both the top and bottom jaw clamping the mouth shut, i had no choice but to go in through the gill to unhook first and then go in through the mouth to retrieve the hooks, sometimes they can be hooked very awkwardly and i imagine a lot of beginners just wont know how to deal with them.

Thanks for the video Chris. I tried lure fishing for the first time proper before Christmas and caught a small pike but the unhooking experience has put me off quite a lot. The lure only had a single hook, hooked in the nose but the soft lure was wedged in its mouth and nothing would move, i rested it to avoid panic and somehow the hook itself fell out in the net but the lure was still stuck?! I cut the lure down and eventually got it out, rested the fish some more and it swam off but ive been scared to try again as i cant bring myself to potentially hurt a fish and the pool i imagine is mostly small pike. I think i need to try again and hopefully this was a one off and i can try and be a bit more confident, your videos make it look so easy!

Hi, good to see videos on pike care. Few extras, please dont lift the fish only by its chin, always support the body. Bigger fish can kick and brake / dislocate their jaws. When hooking the bait, make sure there is no hook further forward than the top dorsal fin and like you say, strike on that first run. Happy pike!

Always helpful videos !! I have learnt so much from you . Keep up the good work .. what do you do when fish gets deep hooked and you can't get the hook out, worst case scenario. I have read in other places that cut out as much as possible but do not hank out the hook and if there is any blood the pike is more likely to die.

Great video mate, only comment I’ll make & this isn’t a negative but given your platform I would promote unhooking mats not everyone as sensible as you! I never had an issue with unhooking pike when I adopted the mindset of “I’d rather lose a pike than deep hook it”

Try Knipex side cutters.They are much stronger than those double pivot jobs.

Totally agree I have caught pike with 3 or 4 traces stuck in it month from other anglers that dnt have a clue on what line to use or how to hold them I only says if any knew angler wants to try pike fishing have anexperience pike angler with u first before try yourself

Great unhooking technique, this was taught to me on a Farnham Angling society Pike teach in. Sitting astride limits their movement and prevents injury.

I Strike as soon as I can when pike fishing I never fish dead baits in spring and summer because pike speed up when its warm. I have had to rescue pike from anglers in the past.

Really wish I watched this before I went fishing today went for the first time since I was like 10 was throwing around a yellow and red spoon thinking i was bass fishing not wanting a pike as my fish turns out I was using a spoon for a pike and caught a 3.5 pound one😂
