Pike Fishing : Soft Plastic Lure Gear (2020)
Catching big pike on lures is an absolute passion of mine. Pike fishing requires the right tackle, especially when lure fishing. Of all lures soft plastic lures are the most successful for me, and so in this video I take a look at the set-ups I use to fish this type of lure successfully for pike. From lure fishing rods, reels, braided lines and pike traces, I cover the two set-ups that I use for fishing shads from 12cm up to 23cm in this video.
You can use these outfits with a wide range of lures - from curly tail grubs to paddle tails. They also work great for casting crankbaits and are suitable for both lure fishing from the bank and boat lure fishing. I mainly fish for pike whilst boat lure fishing, but by using lighter jigheads you can easily rig soft lures to fish in shallow water along the banks of rivers and lakes.
I will make a separate video about the titanium traces that I use as they have several advantages including I believe they are more difficult for pike to see underwater.

Thanks for watching! This is the gear that I use for casting small to medium-sized lures (up to about 16cm and 23cm respectively) for pike. How do your lure outfits differ? Let me know in the comments below.

Surprising that you favour the first rod for heavy lures. I would have thought that baitcaster setup would be better for that. I run two setups - 4-14g light (fixed spool/reel) spinning setup for perch (although it has caught me a lot of pike!) and a 15-50g medium/hard baitcasting setup for big pike. Out of the two, I much prefer using a baitcaster as its almost effortless to use once you dialled in the spool tension and the brakes not to mention the push button bail arm/spool release and the ability use your thumb to control where your lure drops so you can get pretty accurate casts. I'll eventually add a BFS baitcasting setup to my collection once they become more available/popular and the prices drop.

l thought the breaking strain of the braid on both outfits a bit on the light side, have been lure fishing for 50 years both UK and Europe, since switching to braid a good few years ago l now use Power Pro in 20kg on the light rod, 30kg on the standard setup and 40kg on the heavy rod, l could go lighter and get a bit more distance but l like the strength in case l get snagged up, some of these lures are quite expensive and most waters l fish are quite snaggy.

Hi Clooper Man, fair point, depending on the venues you fish. I must admit, on the ressies I mainly fish snags aren’t a problem. There hasn’t even been a great deal of weed in recent years. On my local rivers I do fish a bit heavier and swap to screw-in jigs instead of a thick-wired jig hook. If I used expensive lures, I’d use heavy braid and test-rated split rings. I don’t use expensive lures, but it would be nice to hang on to them and not leave braid on snags. Tight lines!

Hi Paul, the second set up you displayed here is identical to my neighbour's LRF outfit. Well the only difference I found is the swivel size. The LRF swivels are a fair bit bigger. But they achieve similar results, one in salt water, and the other not. Good stuff, keep them coming.
