Lure fishing for pike on the canal with a 70 year old spinning rod made in scotland in the 1950's. Was great fun catching a few pike on the rod even though it was a bit tricky to get to grips with. This is one of two 1950's milbro rods I have, and i'll be making another video with the other one over the next month or so. I've also got my hands on a few vintage pike lures, and a 1960's vintage reel so i'm also planning a full-vintage set up trip with the exception of line.
If you enjoyed taking a look at this solid glass vintage travel spinning rod it would be great if you could give this video a like, and hit that subscribe video if you wan't to see more from this channel! Drop a comment too and i'll be sure to get back to you as soon as possible!
I paired this rod with the Rigged and ready RR3000 reel. You can get 10% off anything on the rigged and ready travel rods website using discount code AFUK10 at checkout: riggedandready...
Thanks for watching as always, and hopefully i'll see you for the next video!

'Gammy leg' describing that destined-to-die duckling - haven't heard that phrase in decades. Nice work, George.

😂 Not sure why that one was at the front of my mind. Poor duckling, probably doesn't have much time left!

Great idea using your vintage tackle as it's great to see what we used to used back in the day. I didn't have my own rod or reel for years so i had to beg my Uncle to borrow his, it was an old glass two piece rod which came with three different tips, one for float fishing another for ledgering ect and a really stiff section which he told me was for sea fishing. The rod was really heavy but i didn't care, i thought it was the pups nuts and always felt so special when fishing with it as it was my Uncles pride and joy. Looking forward to seeing more of you vintage tackle videos. All the best.

Thanks mate! Yeah it was really enjoyable to use something way before my time. Felt in touch with history and the people who had held the rod before me to some extent! That multi purpose rod of your uncles sounds really cool. Great thing about fishing is it brings back a lot of memories for a lot of people, and makes more for the future. Thanks for the comment!

I've got my Dads 7' Milbro spinning rod and old Diawa reel, technology has certainly moved on over the decades, but great to see the old gear being used, brought back so many memories of fishing with Dad on our local river. I've still got the first reel I ever had, an Intrepid Black Prince, still works too! Great vid as always.

Dad has a very similar rod that is two piece and is great for using for finesse perch fishing as its easy to put the action into the lure.

Proper classic bit of kit, love the travel bag with the extra pockets. I've got a couple of old rods with the same reel mounts 🙂. Definitely looked a bit whippy and harder to set the hook. Brilliant film Cheers George Atb Rick n Billy

Glad you enjoyed it Rick! Yeah that travel bag meant business, can imagine back in the 50’s it was the dogs b*llocks. Reel mount felt good at first but it did become a bit of a pain in the rain, was sliding all over the shop

I think lure development is far more important than anything else. You could use a bamboo rod and a centre pin reel and still catch with modern day lures.

I used a 70s bright orange hollow glass 10 foot leger rod with an old Leeds centrepin reel to trot worms for trout on the stream in my village a couple of weeks back. Worst rod I've ever used and I loved every minute of it lol

Nice video. I have a bit of a fetish for Milbro's Solglass range myself: up to 7' they are a lot of fun to use and look great against foliage, but a tad heavy in the 8' models. I'd suggest they are better matched with with a heavier reel for style, historical authenticity and balance I'd recommend a Mitchell 300, ABU 505 or my favourite pairing, ABU Record 444 (Milbro were distributors for Mitchell products in the UK before Garcia, and indeed ABU). They work light spinners in flowing water really well and the self loading nauture of fibreglass achieves surprising distances. Just a couple of points, you rod was made in April 1963 (from the number 463 printed sideways on below the make and model stamp). Regarding the rings: probably not ideal to use braid since they are unlined. However, funnily enough, the logic of a large butt ring funneling rapidly into smaller guides is adopted in modern Fuji ring sets so, perhaps not so odd as all that. Incidentally, the factory where your rod was built is, I believe the same place where modern Scott built Daiwa rods are made.
@adventurefishinguk
@adventurefishinguk 8 месяцев назад
Thanks for the info and the advice! It was great fun using it, I do think though that the very soft action of the fiberglass is a little too floppy to be an effective rod for pike fishing. I found it very difficult to set the hook on a few other occasions!

I used Glass Fiber rods In the 70's. Had some really big Pike on them. I would use Abu Plugs and spinners. Wish I still had some of those, they were better than the ones We get today.

Did you ever find the action of the rod was too soft to set the hook effectively? That’s what I found using this one

@@adventurefishinguk No not really, we had nothing to compare with. Only Cane ones, and they were way out of our Money range. I don't remember loosing any fish though. Maybe It was down the Lures we had back then, Much better than the ones they do now.
