you can also bend the hooks out slightly to increase your hook ups. Also dont be afraid to trim the legs and add trout beads and or small split shots for sound and extra weight. Not too much they will sink

Great video congrats on the 3k! I really do enjoy watching frog fishing for pike. I use live-target a lot (have some of their frogs) I mostly use their crank baits. Anyways keep up the great work.cant wait for part2. -Alex

It's hard to beat a topwater bite. I use third a lot mostly for bass but j also get pike and pickerel. As you seen in my video I use the live target mouse too. There are a ton of different ones on the market here there very popular. I have the spro king frog and the lunker hunt combat frog But also the smaller size live target frogs. You can trim the rubber legs to get different action from the frog. If there shorter it will want to walk more from side to side. It's tricky to use them with the big trace because as you said they want to sink nose first. Try a heavy fluorocarbon leader 100 pound and twitch the frog giving it slack like a jerk bait this will make it walk side to side and stay in the strike zone longer. Can't wait for 2 and 3. Posted a video about my boat so you can see what I chase the fish in.

+Huntnfishnuts We've quite a few top water lures over here but we'll have no where near what you guys have. A small number of lure anglers have been frogging and other surface fishing for years but frogging this last year or two has been noticed as a fun way to fish by so many so that's why I focussed just on them. My frogging is mostly just the odd time, I rarely go out just to catch on the surface any more and that's why I don't get set up for it. Not ideal using the heavy gear but I'm a bit of a no frills guy. You have little chance making it walk using the gear I do and I know that, I'm just not too fussed. Cheers for the tips though, someone else might pick up on those too and help them.

+Lynx Clan PS3™ | 2015 Hi mate and thanks very much. More frogging action to come soon so stay tuned. On the fan meet, I'm on with one in a fashion. More details to come when it gets sorted but it's basically a meet up to raise some money for a young lad who needs to go to the US for some treatment. Sorting a venue, date and details then will put up a video to let people know. Thanks for the idea though. Tight lines

what type of rod and reel is that
@riverpiker
@riverpiker 7 лет назад
Its my baitcaster and jerkbait rod which is really for heavy pike lures, however I manage to use it for smaller frogs too. Rod is a BFT Roots 160g and reel is an Okuma Komodo 364

what rods can I buy in America just like that, with enough power to handle a big pike but enough to throw frogs. I been looking but some are too light and some are too heavy. I'm not sure. Can you plz help. Im looking at the st croix premier muskie rod, its heavy enough but I'm not sure about the frogs

Brilliant.If only you had put this up late spring! I tried some early frog things years ago and had less luck than my beloved big S's.These squishy frogs look ideal for the weedy as fook upper great ouse that i inhabit.Thanks again for a cracking watch.

+Hedge hog Yeah I wanted to get it done earlier but it didn't happen. Still time as not much water about and rivers are still weedy. Watch out for the next video coming over the next few days where the surface action hots up.

+Craig Roberts Thanks Craig. I probably fish the same waters as you do as I get about all over. You have to keep on the move to find the fish plus I like a change. I fish mostly the free stretches of rivers and canals.

does bass pro shops deliever over the pond? hands down their soft plastic humping toad rigged on a 5/0 wide gap hook is the best frog. paddle fish drive fish crazy - rip them across the top the paddle feet make lots of noise and get the fish attention. i fished dozens of brands and the humping toad paddle feet frog is best for the dollar. they all get torn up but the bass pro shops brand seems to hold up the best. others fall apart after a few hits but the bps brand stays on and still works. look into em.

+Pawel Sawicki I've never ordered from them matey. That's the problem over here we are still short on choice so trying everything out isn't an option.
@61diemai
@61diemai 9 лет назад
+Pawel Sawicki They used to do already more than 15 years ago , so why not still ? I'm located in Germany , placed a few orders back then , but you must be aware of your local tax regulations , over here I have to pay 19% value added tax plus 4% EU import tax(on the VAT sum, if my memory serves me right), if merchandise value is more than 23 Euros .And often those big US Shops take quite a high shipping charge overseas , too .Nowadays I sometimes look for lures on US Ebay , might be lucky to find good bargains with lower shipping charges .

Great video! Learned alot definetly. Might take some time with a frog next time im out, fish alot of areas that are like 4 feet and just covered with underwater plants and stuff. How big is the frog you use? Looks about 15cm? Have you ever fished topwater in the dark?
@riverpiker
@riverpiker 9 лет назад
+Karl Ukendt Thanks Karl. Yeah those areas sound perfect, give them a try. The frog body is probably about 10cm with another 8cm of rubber leg. they're not that big. There's other models about, I think the Spro king daddy is bigger but I like the live target as they seem to hook more i've found. Never fished topwater in the dark, but now you got me thinking! lol. Keep your eyes open for the next video over the coming days as we have loads of surface action to come.

+River Piker Very excited to see the new frog video. I have a friend that sometimes uses a lure called a "whopper plopper" kind of same principle as a normal buzzbait, and he can only get fish to strike on it when its dark, makes for some interessting fishing haha.

Great video as usual. Probably the most exciting way to fish. To see that bow wave come up behind the lure is just awesome. It's interesting that you're still getting success in to autumn. I had put my frogs away until spring but will be putting them back in my lure bag!

Great vids m8, Just one question the pike seem to always miss the frog for me anyways? Is there a speed i should go for not to fast for them to miss the frog? I would be fishing a shallow lake fishing over weed, bullrushs too.
@riverpiker
@riverpiker 8 лет назад
cheers pal. Slow is good, because it makes it easier for them to home in on the lure and they don't miss. If they are coming up through weedy or pads etc they lose sight and miss. Also adding in a few pauses might trigger a strike or give them time to hit while it's not moving. Don't be afraid to leave the lure ten seconds before moving or more if you believe pike are close by. But, sometimes the slow speed or pause has them come for a look then turn away, but a faster speed has them having less time to think and more of a reaction. So as you can guess they often then end up missing the lure. I know we like to catch fish but with surface fishing it's often more about the fun so just have misses as part of the fun. The bigger fish don't miss half as much though! You will find frogs are also poorer for hooking up even if the pike don't miss for once. Frogs are a weed-less lure so great for using in places you wouldn't normally be able to fish, over thick weed or lily pads. But if you don't need to use a weed-less lure then there are lots of other surface lures out there. Simple poppers are great, there's crawling lures, mouse, wakebaits and all sorts. Many have two treble hooks so you will hook more fish with them.

Thanks, Was fishing it had about 40 swirls and some takes all lost, great fun, just a question was using light braid (15lb) as I don't get distance with frogs with heavy briad, I was using a heavy stuff rod when I pulled the line when the fish went in the head I'd just lose it, any tips to get out far with light lures with heavy braid? Thanks
@Fishing7776
@Fishing7776 8 лет назад
Sorry for the English my autocorrect is changing my words! What I meant to say is that when I did hook a fish the fish would straight go down into weed, the it would just pop out the frog,
@riverpiker
@riverpiker 8 лет назад
I know what you mean it's not easy casting with light lures on heavier gear. Problem is with pike (as opposed to bass which the frogs were designed for) you need to set the hooks hard and so need heavier gear to do it. I probably wouldn't go lighter than 40lb braid and trace personally simply because i've had line or trace snap on the strike when using light gear. I tend to also use one of my stiff jerk bait rods that are way over rated for the frogs but the lighter you can go with the rod the better. You still need a bit of stiffness in the rod to help set the hooks. Gradually casting further and further, as the braid soaks up water, it helps casting a little. If you use the hollow frogs you can squeeze out a bit of air and add a touch of water which makes the frog heavier and easier to cast. What i tend to do though is have longer line let out on the cast, and slowly cast it rather than try to hit the horizon. That seems to help me get some distance.
@Fishing7776
@Fishing7776 8 лет назад
Thanks a lot, the rod I'm using is very stiff, so I say the pike actually bites down, how hard should I strike? Very hard to get the hook setted? I have some Shakespeare 60lb braid, should I get a new spool of line? What would you suggest that's light and strong around the 50lb mark? Thanks
@thegamingbadger889

It's 80lb power pro, as it's my pike set up. not easy to cast the lighter frogs though.
