Now called Grey Valley siding, this was the brand new siding built specifically for the Pike River Mine, however it was used only a handful of times before the disaster at the mine.
These days it has been renamed to Grey Valley siding and is used only very occasionally. I thought it would be worthwhile documenting it on film, and I hope you enjoy a closer look at it.

The engine is then facing backwards for the return. Or are trains usually double-headed with the driver relocating to the other cab for the return trip? An interesting siding layout. Thanks for this footage.

Yes always double headed, 2 locomotives are also required for the trip to Christchurch loaded.

That's a very interesting concept I never knew that's how it worked first loads the Coal then detaches and heads at the rear at the chutes. I wish I could find a place to film it but it would be trespassing in private land without authority so I can't get anywhere near Pike River. But then again I would be able to if I knew what Train it was film at the crossings.

Didn't realize it was being used the odd time and I live near by.
