Hi, I used to think it was bad catch and release practice, but have since been told it's a fairly common deformity caused by a genetic flaw in all types of fish, but more obvious in Northern European Pike. I've not seen anything particularly reliable online about this, so can't say how true it is. Interesting stuff and thanks for commenting.
Crazy isn't it. I think that's because the fish follow the fly in and make a last minute decision into whether to take thefly or not as it speeds up before being lifted from the water.
