Does anyone else miss it when it was dirt?
Really bad weather that year, they moved the finish line down the mountain from the summit to Devil's Playground. Most folks got under 10min that year. since the course was a lil' short.
There is an Unser, a couple of Dallenbachs, and a Mears. Seems appropriate, considering what I'd heard of racing "families" back then. I also see Jeff Zwart dragging a 911 up the hill. Tajima and Millen are there, too.

That is one of the greatest years. Especially with Millens bonkers gt4. It was a huge upset. Tajima and Mullen were both idols of mine. Why I got into racing.

Yeah this is excellent as good as rally for the same period. This is real racing, takes a giant dump on Nascar oval track yawn-fest.

Man, this race was so much better on dirt. I went this year, and while it was an experience, I don't know if I will do it again. Watching cars drive up the track on asphalt is not nearly as awesome as watching them race up on dirt.

Just to clarify what the ESPN announcers were saying the Toyota 503E engine developed 1,100HP at the START and about 700HP at the top of the mountain.

+raikkonen2013 , me or one of the other marshals in my group would tape this every year, since we couldn't actually go out there to work it. We'd have a big party and watch it together. It just really bothers me that the only tape of it I have is a year they didn't go all the way to the top!

+oldSCCAguy yah but hey at least you have it on tape. Most of these events have been lost in history. Its amazing you got to share it. Brings back great ol memories for you I'm sure. By the way that Suzuki Escudo is one heck of a car.

@@fatman1288 yes. I was kinda suggesting re the comment above mine. It is hard to select tyres fore multiple surfaces, but there's heaps of courses that have a combination. I also miss the old 'peak.

I went up Pikes Peak around 96-98 with Family for vacation. I was so young when I found out that they held races at PP, I didn't know of Hillclimb racing ât the time. I thought the races were like sprint cars sending it up the mountain like 8 at a time... wasnt til years later I realized..

25 years later, the entire course is paved now, and a great time is just a smidge under 10 minutes. Just goes to show how much bigger the b@lls where back in the day.

i think that was Tajima in the Suzuki Cutlass, the pre cursor to the Escudo, both were available in Gt1 and 2

CnyAutofreak Thanks! I used to record it every year, and we'd (road racing Corner Workers) have a party and all watch it together. Can't believe the only one that survived was the year the course was short. Grrrrr.

Rick LeRoy, I don't know if anyone *ever* showed it live, since it takes so long to complete it. Last time I remember watching it live was a bunch of different online streaming stuff. Maybe 2010 or so? If I'm wrong, and you've seen it live, gimme a reply..my memory's not what it used to be.

They don't televise it because it is an all day event from basically 6:30 ish a.m to 6:30ish pm and it is boring to be televised when a run goes without a hitch and when it does go wrong it's usually not that eventful

HA! I knew at one point it had to have no real road. It WAS all dirt and mud when it rained. With all the training in the first DIRT game I had on that race, I couldn't understand why every video showing this hillclimb were on a perfect road, with no drift at all. XD

田嶋さんとっても嬉しそうだね。まあ彼がミレンのマシンを見たとき、「これはマズイぞ」と思ったに違いないからね。最終セクションのコーナリングは田嶋のほうが丁寧だった。マシンが速すぎて、ミレンさんは最後疲れちゃったんじゃないだろうか。ちなみに映像で田嶋さんに抱き着いている女性は田嶋さんの奥さんです。

I miss the days Pikes Peak was dirt. It takes more skill to race it on dirt and it's much better to view dirt racing. It's a shame they ruined it by paving it.
