But I love how people makes up myth about it. The truth is that only 6 teams made it to the finish line, and the only reason there was a record was because the only 2 cars in higher unlimited class did not finnish at all. The year after had more asfalt and much quitcker times, like 30s less. It was basically mostly luck that they even won
Tack :)
Usually I don't comment on youtube, but this movie is awsome! Some good old good guys, without technical background with help from some young highschool students, mangage to to build the winning car. If you speak Swedish, you would enjoy the dialect from Värmland. And ofcourse the "Mr X" fighting cancer but still manage to build the ultimate car. This is hillbilly it's best!
yes , to me there is only one , and its Per Eklund , ohhhh i loved that guy , great champion , great driver and great mechanical , to me his is my nr 1of the world
Setting a new record and making it stand for as long as it did is really impressive. It's hard enough to drive with oxygen but these guys didn't have time to think that far so Per had to do it without oxygen. Sheer stubbornness and some Swedish "Jävla anamma" and they pulled it off.
The record still stands. It's the last gravel Pikes Peak that Eklund won. You cannot defeat the record, as the course is now 100% asphalt. The year after this record, they started to bitumen the Pikes Peak course bit by bit, so basically every time a part of it was converted to asphalt, the record is only valid for that track configuration. And not comparable to others with less or more gravel parts.
An incredible video about Saab from Sweden but also an incredible record about the pike racing in Colorado, United States. Good times! Good guys! Good machines! GOOD CHALLENGING ROAD. The 20th century was memorable, nothing compares, when we look at the generation of the 21st century, they don't even know how to tie their own shoelaces.
This video tells the story why we in Sweden have so many great not only carbuilders but machinebuilding in general. I would call it a mix of anything is possible/stubbornness and "jävlar anamma"
It's a pity there's no English subtitles or so. I'm Dutch and can decipher some of the things being said - but it is minimal. And let's be honest - this is a milestone documentary for every Saab-lover.
I love to watch this documentary. I just had to try to find out what that old smoking man"x:et´s" real name is and his name is Leif Ahl and also is a true racing legend, both as a motorcycle racing driver but more as an self taught constructor. A total genius in my opinion! Sad that he past away in cancer after this documentary. Leif Ahl is one of those people you can be inspired by.
Such an awsome documentary of remarkable people! Their passion drove them all the way to the finishline!! I will go to Arvika motormuseum. Just to be able to see the car.
I recall briefly meeting Per Eklund and team back in 1988 on a night Channel ferry crossing between Dover and Oostende. It was quite cool to park alongside his trailered rally car and having a brief chat over coffee.
One thing that is not mentioned in the film is that Eklund got a "gift card" from Saab at a banquet after winning the 1999 European Rallycross Championship. The "gift card" said that Saab would back him in a bid to win the 2000 Pikes Peak. However, the only technical help that Saab provided was the molding of the carbon fibre, and the other parts of the body. The drivetrain was all Subaru.
I watched this maybe 2 years ago for the 2nd time ... and I like the original Saab cars very much .. and I am again thrilled by the erection and assembly process of that race car .. by hand and skill and brain and passion .. beginning with a simple rectangle of square steel .. it seems impossible to me to align and mount all that .. delicate and precision components .. into one responsive, smoothly operating power instrument . in such a traditional craftsmen fashion 😯🎩
Excellent. I could not understand what was being said, but you don't have to when the Legend Per Eklund and his team build a monster of a car. How about a return to Pikes Peak with a VW Beetle?
@@TheRedSphinx it ran in the proper category, which is not production, this car had just a Saab badge and some body panels, it was not even unibody, it was space frame. But to me, it was a Saab, and it’s a damn shame that cannibalized it and discarded such a monument of inventivity.
