I live near to a really small aerodrome in Castellon, Spain. Well, they have a PC-6 there for skydivers, and the pilot gets quicker to the ground than the skydivers. Amazing aircraft, this video put a smile on my face when I saw the runway aspect on final.

I love the porter When I was in the army the pilots we had were amazing and I watched one one day come in for a landing and we had 15 knots down the runway And he throttled it back at 10 feet and hovered then backed down the runway about 100 meters and then throttled back up and flew off Pre mobile phone days so no video evidence unfortunately as it is something I would like to see again 👍👍

I am a student pilot still practicing with a Cessna 172 in Dallas, I really enjoyed your amazing video, good piloting skills and a good camera recording everything. I got a gopro camera but I am still wondering the way to install it on the cockpit, sometimes I am able to watch unbelievable details in each flight like traffic, birds flying really high and even drones. If I have the opportunity I just grab my phone to take a brief video of 10 or 15 seconds long and from that I can take a picture too. A few days ago I just had the experience practicing the slow flight maneuver an the wind was really strong with more than 40 knots so the instructor found the way to fly against the wind plus our slow flight with an average of 35 to 38 KIAS and suddenly the aircraft was not moving at all, just suspended in the middle of the air, then we discovered we were flying backwards, my instructor took the control to allow me to take a video. Wow, that was a very unique experience.

@reunion974jb
@reunion974jb 2 месяца назад
Thanks for your com @davidwheatcroft2797 ! The Pilatus PC6 can overspeed like any other plane, but we are allowed by the manufacturer to make that kind of steep descent by using the « beta » range. Basically we reduced the propeller pitch in flight and it acts like a big brake and keep the speed in the green arc 💪 I don’t know if the PC6 is still in use in the US but I know that Air America used them in the 60´s. Fly safe 🚀

@@reunion974jb Can I fly this thing with SEP and PPL ? Or what are the requirements?
@reunion974jb
@reunion974jb 4 года назад
Maniot negative ! If you want to fly this plane you have to be qualified on it, as you need the mention « SET » (single engine turbine) on your license. But the regulation doesn’t say anything about CPL or PPL holder, but usually skydive centers want the pilots to have something like : PPL => 1000 TT or CPL => 400 TT. This plane is known as a very tricky one so it’s more an Insurance issue ...

Is it true Porter can't overspeed even 90° nose down? STOL airplanes blow my mind. Is the no-overspeed a myth?
@reunion974jb
@reunion974jb 6 лет назад
In fact it is not completely true! Pilatus Porter can descent almost at 90 ° thanks to its propeller which acts as a brake when we pass in "beta range" (means to reduce the propeller's pitch). Certainly it brakes very well but it is necessary to watch the speed not to overspeed ;)
@bruno84
@bruno84 6 лет назад
STOL capability is one thing, being able to perform a steep descent like that is another game... the PC6 uses the propeller pitch as a brake. No plane is "overspeed free" though...

Can you really reverse the prop pitch in flight? Mike patey might be able to but is this actually a thing?
@reunion974jb

You don’t really reverse because then you would be in negative pitch which is strictly forbidden by Pilatus. I use the « beta mode » which means a very low pitch but still positive 😁

Quelle est la configuration de descente ? Volet, pas de l'hélice, taux, vitesse...? Merci pour la vidéo
@reunion974jb
@reunion974jb 3 года назад
Capt. Richard Aviation there is absolutly no problem using the beta mode, it’s actually very efficient and allows the plane to perform very steep descent. The only one danger is to select reverse in flight (it’s just more few degrees backward on the power lever). But with beta mode, the propeller still has a positive pitch and brake very well 👌👌
@richardnurse2772
@richardnurse2772 4 года назад
@@reunion974jb I contacted Pilatus about it and they said that there is a big palcard that says Do not use reverse in flight. This is the answer the technical support from Pilatus gave me: " Reverse in flight is strictly forbidden and there is a big placard installed on the dashboard which states "DO NOT REVERSE IN FLIGHT" Revers must only be used when the aircraft is on the ground. Beta approaches can be done with the PC-6 but then the propeller is only at fine pitch but not reverse." So you are saying that reverse is when the throttle lever is way back, but you only do it a few degrees back?
@reunion974jb
@reunion974jb 4 года назад
Capt. Richard Aviation Thank you for your interest in the PC6. It is an incredible machine to fly and you quickly fall in love with it. You are absolutely right about the in-flight reverse. There is indeed a "do not use reverse in flight" placard in front of the pilot. As far as I'm concerned, I never go below 70% NP, and the turbine is constantly around 98% NG. During the descent, the power lever is constantly adjusted so as not to fall below 70% of NP, so we remain in Beta mode and thus avoid the "low pitch" alarm. To switch to reverse you really have to take the power lever out of its notch and pull it back completely.
