Tony Ruban, Principal Consultant, Tetra Tech, presents his talk "Pile Load Testing of a Concrete Belled Pile and Rock Socket Pile Using the Osterberg Load Cell".
Abstract: During construction of the Northwest Anthony Henday Drive, alternatives to optimize pile foundations for the bridge structures were desired. This stretch included 21 km of roadway and 29 structures. Half of the bridge structures were designed with driven steel piles and half utilized cast-in-place concrete piles. Pile load tests permit the bridge designers to adopt a higher resistance factor, which translates into a more cost-effective foundation. This presentation discusses case histories for pile load tests on concrete belled and concrete rock socket piles that were implemented at two sites. Both pile load tests incorporated the use of an Osterberg Load Cell.
Speaker Bio: Mr. Ruban is a Principal Consultant with Tetra Tech, specializing in Geotechnical Engineering. He has over 40 years of experience in geotechnical engineering on a variety of projects throughout western Canada. His areas of expertise include foundations, slope stability, groundwater seepage, and water retaining structures. Mr. Ruban has been involved with numerous investigations for a wide variety of projects including industrial developments, roadways, highway embankments, cut slopes, bridges, subdivision developments, excavations, cooling ponds, water reservoirs, sewage lagoons, tailings dams, waste dumps and pipeline river crossings. In the past decade, he has been involved in numerous pile load tests that have been successfully used to optimize pile foundations.
