I'm late to the party, but it was an asbolute delight to see this video come together! A marvelous breakdown of the game's themes and narration. Loved it!
Awesome, I love your videos, you put a lot of work into them and I am surprised that you do not have as many views or subscribers. Pillars of Eternity is such an amazing game and the setting is truly unique among Fantasy RPG’s. I am very curious to see how all of those goes into creating Avowed. I know a lot of people are disappointed it isn’t isometric but I have faith that Obsidian can do something special with it. What are your thoughts on Avowed?
Man, you really sold me on this game! I haven't played something in a while with such in depth characters. Makes me remember when I was in high school playing Geneforge 5 all day. Thanks for the video, man!
I feel fortunate to have stumbled upon this excellent video. Not only did I recently finish PoE, but I'm also working on an indie RPG myself and found this really instructive. Can you recommend any other material for someone just starting out with video game writing? Thanks.
Glad to know you just finished PoE. And yes, I can refer some material: 1. In terms of worldbuilding tips, be sure to pick up Timothy Hickson's book 'On Writing and Worldbuilding'. This is the same guy who runs 'Hello Future Me' RU-vid channel and he is brilliant. 2. For a guide on video game writing I'd recommend 'Video Game Storytelling' by Evan Skolnick. This is more about what goes into the writing process of video games. Laying out the sort of documents you'd need to prepare and workflow. Hope this all helps! And follow me on Twitter and link me stuff to do with your game if you wish.
Excellent analysis. I confess that I just completed my first playthrough in a very shallow manner - choosing story and companion interactions as quickly as possible, just to get to the next bit of action. Your video reminds me additional playthroughs are needed to fully appreciate this well crafted world. Fine work!
I will do my best to take a look at the game. But honestly, I have a lot of real-life responsibilities (full time job, parent of a toddler) so it's not likely I'll be able to do a video. I'm back into Disco Elysium again after the Final Cut and plan to do a video on that after I complete my novels first draft.
Haha, no. I need to build up a portfolio for that. And sadly, I haven't been able to because I've been in lockdown for nearly a year (my child is at home cos daycares are closed and me being a parent comes before my side hustle). I haven't given up though. My city will be in lockdown for another month. I've been slowly working on some projects to put into a portfolio. Lockdown has also been why I haven't made any new content (this video was done in the brief window Melbourne had outside of lockdown). But you know, gotta have hope.
It really doesn't - hence why I made the video haha. Most people I know love PoE. The prose has a good flow and the language is very descriptive. I've had a conversation with someone though, who said they didn't like PoE because it was: "needlessly confusing" which honestly baffled me both as a concept (can something ever be 'purposely confusing'?) and as a critique.
@@GriffinMuffin The thing is, the prose makes it hard to understand compare to other crpg writing. Personally I read a lot of fantasy novels and reading Pillars felt like that, even more than Numenera for example. It seems a good portion of gamers dont like that though. I love it though. I have not seen your Deadfire video, and have not yet started that one yet. But I heard the story got lower in quality How true is that?
The story 'quality' is the same. Good writing, morally ambious story threads, decent philosophically entrenched ideas and big characters driving the story. However, there are certain beats, events and player driven aspects of it are different. Sometimes you'll find yourself frustrated you don't have the option to do what feels like the right thing to do. There are less times when you feel like 'the hero' and more just like a mercenary. Edit: if you want to chat more about this sorta stuff I have a Discord with plenty of PoE fans. It's small but we're passionate.
