"Poop" originally comes from the Latin puppis, which means "rear end." This led to "poop deck," the rearmost deck on a ship. Being "pooped" originally referred to having a wave crash over the stern of your ship, which generally means everything gets soaked and bad times. So, a party pooper is someone who metaphorically tosses a bucket of cold water down your back while you're trying to have a good time.

Yes, my mom also loved the movie, so much so that I remember being livid as a child when she opted to watch it one night over the yearly showing of "The Wizard of Oz" (this was pre-VCRs, when party lines were still a thing and you had to watch something on t.v. when it actually aired). Decades later, I've now seen the film about 20 times, as it's served as a perfect comfort movie that plays fresh each time, while also containing that something extra: the "Approved By Mom" seal of quality.

Finally watched The Last Duel after reading about Damon's enthusiasm for making it. Knew what to expect and what the message would be. Still haunted for days by the rape scene from her point of view. The subtle difference between moans of passion and moans with crying from physical pain. And how it's not worth it to complain. Quite depressing. So, thank goodness for your comedy, starting with Craig's "if I wanted to flap, I would have auditioned for the play."

I'm not much younger than either of you, and I remember party lines. I didn't have one, but I knew people who did, and it was a frequent plot point in movies and TV where people would pick up the line just in time to hear something shocking. Why would people choose a party line to say something that could come back to bite them?
@Robobagpiper

From the online etymology dictionary: poop (v): "become tired," 1931, of unknown origin (see pooped) pooped (adj): "tired," 1931, of unknown origin, perhaps imitative of the sound of heavy breathing from exhaustion (compare poop (n.2)). But poop, poop out were used in 1920s in aviation, of an engine, "to die." Also there is a verb poop, of ships, "to be overwhelmed by a wave from behind," often with catastrophic consequences (see poop (n.1)); hence in figurative nautical use, "to be overcome and defeated" (attested in 1920s). So a party pooper kills the energy of the party. The scatological meaning of "poop" may have started with onomatopoeia; the sense "to break wind softly" is attested from 1721 (predating the meaning of "excrement" by about 20 years), from an earlier form "to make a short blast on a horn" (poupen, late 14c.).

I commiserate with Matt on the Seven-Year Itch scene. Also, there's the scene from Jerry Lewis' Way Way Out where the two astronauts have been on the base for months without another person never mind a woman around. Jerry comes up to take over with his new wife Connie Stevens and the guys can't control themselves, speculating about what she's doing in the bathroom- "Maybe she's one of those girls who like to soap themselves all over before they get in the tub." She comes out and says exactly that and Shmidlap loses control.

Pig is an allegory for grief and depression, not washing himself is a sign of that. He lost his wife and tried to leave society and go and live in the woods, with a pig as his only attachment. So when it's stolen, he experiences those feelings all over again (though he never stopped), except this time he can do something about it. The father steals Cage's pig because he is trying to fuck over his son's business.

Though this is a particular type of movie, the genre of female fantasy is larger than one might imagine... There are MANY movies where you can see an obviously prominent underlying female emotional impetus prsent throughout, to the point that it largely characterizes the movie (such as with the Twilight series).

I disagree. A person in that mindset of total retreat from everything and to be "not quite there2 will not care about the look in the mirror in the morning. Some folks watching may only have one headphone in (at times) and if they do, they only hear one of you, with the other sounding very distant. Try watching with one headphone in to see what I mean. This is the only channel I subscribe to that mixes the audio like this.
