Tom is bringing flexy back with this video unboxing and writing demonstration of the Pilot Custom 912 fountain pen with the FA nib. The pen seems rather understated, but it packs quite the writing punch as you will see in this video. This is truly a pen built for those who are looking to upgrade their writing ability with a quality, flexible nib. The nib has amazing performance but the body it is on is relatively bland in terms of appearance. We'd love to see this nib on a Custom 823 model. What about you? Tell us what you think in the comments below.

I have a 912 with a Waverly nib and it’s one of my favorite pens. I have lots of prettier pens, but I love the understated elegance of the 912. And I love the CON-70 converter. Great all round package. These pens really are all about the nib and the writing experience. Worth every penny.

As retirement gifts (a point system, so I got to choose more than 1 pen) I chose a Pilot with the FA nib and one with the “Humpback of Notre Dame” look nib! I also got a normal Custom 74. As to writing, I was immediately a convert to Japanese pens. Over time I have learned to love some European pens (not a big fan of Montblanc 149, as I just always had ink leakage into the cap, and always had ink on my fingers; would sell if it had not been a gift). For writing, as long as not the EF or F nib, I absolutely love both Pilot (Namiki), Platinum, and Sailor. THIS REVIEW WAS HELPFUL FOR FLEX. I see why EF may well work better in an FA nib. [My compliments too: God my first Opus 88 (the Demonstrator) this week, and I will unbox and, perhaps (?) review. I will give you high marks for simple, but very effective packaging. Just need you to offer your Oaks Mall Store in Thousand Oaks, CA.] The extra fine looked good on Rhodia paper; would it work well on card stock...using flex on special cards? BTW: Most lawyers and accountants would not bring a lot of “pizza” to work; in Japan, pizza in the business district was unknown. :)

Oh my God I just received mine and inked it up. WOW the flex on this pen is awesome. I actually sold a Namiki Falcon in black resin with gold trim, a Pilot Falcon with black resin in rhodium trim that had a custom Spencerian nib modification by John Mottishaw, and a Pilot Metal Falcon - they don’t begin to touch the Custom Heritage 912. Love your reviews and I apologize that I did not purchase this pen from you because I do believe in supporting American businesses but I had to go with the Japan seller on eBay on this one. I look forward to doing business with you in the future. Thanks 🙏🏽.

I have just bought this very pen new from Japan for £130 and love it. That modified Jowo nib looks interesting. I also have a couple of fountain pen revolution Indus pens with the ultra flex nib. £40 shipped to the UK. They are excellent flexing pens. They are Piston fillers so you can easily prime the feed when required. I love my Pilot Custom heritage 912 with the fa nib and use it for normal writing and fun flexing. The 912 fa has become my daily edc mainly because the Con 70 converter holds a lot of ink. I also love the 912 fa because of its classy look. I love flat top and bottom pens.

@@GoldspotPens "Temperamental" as you kindly put it is what I'm experiencing with this 912 FA! I respect your experience and knowledge, just do not share your opinion (yet?) on this pen. Did watch Doodlebud's video on the 912 and will try a 3-channel feed from Flexible Nib Factory to get the nib wetter. Why didn't Pilot opt for the better ebonite feed? I love this pen. But at $280 (current price), it's way over priced in the US. $126 direct from Japan is a good price. I got the Falcon nib version and the Waverley nib version for less than the cost of a single pen from a US retailer. Planning to get every version offered at that price ! I can't believe that anyone in-the-know with fountain pens is buying any "higher end" models from the Japanese Top 3 from US retailers. Got my Pro Gear KoP for $556 (actually ordered a Pilot Custom 845 at the same time, still came in just about $900, a hair over the $880 asked by US retailers just for the KoP). The difference in price is staggering. It's almost like Japan are trying their best to price western retailers out of the market for their pens.

My #2 recommendation would be to get a 14kt gold jowo #6 nib and have it modified by a nib meister and get an ebonite feed assembly. Hello, sorry for bothering you with such issues but I'm just a student and such an investment means a lot to me. A pen like this is a "lifetime investment". I have been following your channel for a very long time and I have watched most of your reviews regarding flex nib fountain pens. Today please help me to choose 1 between these two. For me the doubts are, 1) 912 FA is a bit scratchy if even a little amount of oil is on the paper. How big of a problem is this 2) I couldn't totally be sure if the line variation of M1000 is the same as that of 912 FA. Please let me know your thoughts. 3) Is the extra investment for M1000 really worth it? Please help me.

Thanks for your comment. The Pelikan M1000 nib is bouncy, but is not meant to be flexed like the Pilot Custom 912. The 912 FA is capable of far greater line variation thanks to its nib design. I would suggest the 912 FA over the M1000 if you are looking to flex with the pen.

Arima Massia it doesn’t feel like cheap plastic. I used to prefer metal pens but I love these a lot they are not excessively heavy when carrying in your shirt pocket etc. I don’t have the 912 yet to compare, if it is as good as a daily pen you might skip the 91 and go for 912. But for the price I haven’t found anything that can beat it. Maybe the gold FPR flexnibs but havent tried those(yet)

Pen is over priced and overrated. Specially when you can buy similar looking pens with similar nib for 80% less. Thanks for the video. Well done

I don't agree with it being overrated.I bought my 912 with the Falcon nib for £130 new from Japan. I have a couple of fountain pen revolution indus pens with the ultra flex nib which are £35. The flow on the Indus pens is great and the flex is very good. The Falcon is a bit of class and in my opinion just about perfect.

@@neilpiper9889 I get that. But if you're paying $200 just for the nib. Think about it. There is nothing special about this pen but the nib. You can buy a similar nib from Franklin Christoph, Pen Revolution, etc., for much less than this pen. But I do agree with you. It's a matter of personal comfort.
