In this video I demonstrate a way to modify a Pilot Parallel pen which turns it into a very expressive tool for drawing.
The Pilot Parallel pens I've modified are the 2.4, 3.8 and 6mm, with the latter being my favorite.
Here are the tools I used to make the mod:
1. Dremel tool
2. Heavy duty Cut-off Wheel No. 420
3. 400, 1000 and 2000 grit sandpaper
4. 12000 grit micromesh (avalable at Gouletpens.com)
5. Jeweler's loop
If you don't feel like tinkering, you can buy this modification from the Toronto Pen Company (torontopencompany.com).

I just did the mod on the 1.5mm pen in less than 5min with only sandpaper !!! :D ( 150 grit and 3000, those metal plates are very soft ! ) Smooth on paper no issue and the ink flows well. In reverse or near 90° I get a consistent fine line, around 60° like a good 1mm thick line that gradually increase to 2.5mm on the flatter side. This is fun, the speed of the stroke also plays with the regularity of the line indeed ! Seems it can be a very expressive tool, I need to get use to it now :D

Good to know that this can be done with just sandpaper! And I'm glad you gave this a try and were successful. With a little practice, it's a super expressive tool that more artists should be aware of.

It also works in the body of a MaJohn/ Moonman C3. fits perfectly and a C3 only costs about 20 bux. Cool hack. Great video!

Thanks for the tip! I love my Opus 88’s but would love a cheaper alternative for this parallel hack.

@@mkompan I nearly fainted when i tried it out and it just fit, with no need of tinkering. i was going to use a bit of plumber's tape, if i needed to, but no!

Hey Dean, I was thinking of picking up some C3 pens to do the same, does the entire nib unit screw out on the C3 like it does on the Pilot? Thanks!

It's easy! I've even seen someone on RU-vid use kitchen scissors to make the initial cut. Let me know how it works out. :)

Wonderful really, great ideas ... May I just suggest a dramatic improvement to your filming? Why don't you sit the other way round of your table (if you phisically can)? By that simple modification the objects you handle and show will be uniformly lit and always in full sight, instead of being sucked up by the shadow of your hands which make them too often look undistinguishable? You don't even have to change position of you camera ... You can simply rotate 180° the frame in post and everything will show up right and bright. I think your art and technique deserve that change! Kudos anyway

Thanks you, and thank you for the technical advice (which I know is sorely needed). My table faces a wall, so I’m not able to sit on the other side, but I’ve recently upgraded my lights and started using better camera angles.

This looks fantastic. Generally, what Parallel width do you recommend for this?
@mkompan
@mkompan 2 года назад
Good question! I think I would start with the 2.4mm since it's the easiest to do this modification on. If you enjoy it, then move up to the larger sizes, which take a bit more effort.

You might want to put your light on the other side of your hand. You are blocking your drawing.. btw 8 teach a class he to modify these pens.. yes and I show how you can put the nib in an Opus 😃88!

I’ve made adjustments to my lighting set up, and started using better angles, so I think things are now easier to see. Great to hear that you’re teaching this. It deserves to be better known!

So potentialy destroy a pen to create a pen with more ink ? Well that is dumb
@mkompan
@mkompan 2 года назад
Did you actually watch the video?Yes, there’s a risk that you ruin a ten dollar pen, but this alteration has been done by calligraphers for quite some time, and is worth trying.

Artists have been modifying their tools to suit their purposes for ages. It's not destroyed if you've successfully created something useful to accomplish a task.
