Oh right because if the plane suddenly became paralysed with a major mechanical failure he could get out his screwdriver and fix it you mean? Planes crash because of faults, not who is piloting them.
@@johnclegg4993 A majority of plane crashes are from human error. Even something as something as not properly locking the cargo door led to two DC-10 crashes. One crash was fatal the other was okay; but the pilot's quick thinking for the second one is what saved everyone on that flight.
+Joe Freeman Ikr? When I was little I walked in on my dad watching plane crashes and I've been scared shitless since. I'm going on a plane in 1 or 2 weeks as well.
ohh! I watch air crash investigation every single day, there is nothing to be scared of is the best thing ever!!!! Even, no flight for me without Air crash investigation.
+Joe Freeman that goddamn show. i never flew but i might have to soon and i have watched that show a couple of times and it just made it so clear how you cannot control everything. despite the excellent training of the pilots, a screw here, or a nick there, bam, you're down.
One person with 12,000 hours claiming flying is safe is meaningless. I've seen recollections of pilots with more experience than this guy crashing into the ground at several hundred mph.
@@Hitherto90 lol typical paranoia. How many times a day do airplanes just fall out of the sky and kill people. Now how many cars a day crash and kill people? Air travel is the safest there is when you get in your car tomorrow your odds of dying are significantly higher
I have to fly to turkey in 9 days I wasn't scared until I realised that's it was 9 days away and reading about terrorist attacks hijackers and all of the above has got me shitting!
Sam Smith I literally only just about three months ago got over my intense fear of flying - so intense that twice I've been bumped up to Business class because they thought my panic was a result of claustrophobia. I don't know if this will work for other people, but it worked for me. I did two things. 1) I started casually listening to ATClive (ATC = Air Traffic Control) and 2) I researched the heck out of planes and pilots and flying conditions. What I learnt was that the whole process is so incredibly professional and there are so many measures in place today to keep everything running so pedantically smoothly. I can now sit in a plane (as I did yesterday from Bangkok to Sydney) and actually enjoy my movie whilst we are in relatively strong turbulence. Anyway, I'm ranting. I just thought I would try to help some fellow fear-of-flying flyers out :)
Same here. Our plane flew right into a storm back in 2010 and I’ve been okay with flying till then. During the storm the plane took a sudden drop and for the first time I felt the sensation of falling. Since then I’ve been an apprehensive flyer
Christine Repunte Did you ever see The Day After Tomorrow with Jake Gyllenhaal? I’d say the turbulence during the storm scene in that was probably the equivalent of what I went through. I was horrified 😟
This man has a great heart. You can tell he feels empathy for people who have a fear of flying, and he genuinely wants to put people at ease. He has a great personality for dealing with people.
When he said they can fly for 100 miles without any engines - that line reduced my anxiety by about 50%. I've been on 4 flights in the past week, it's the lack of control that I struggle with. I cycle every day in London but feel perfectly safe because I am largely in control.
As an amateur pilot myself, I must say the scariest moment I ever had flying was with an instructor who looked old enough that he could have a heart attack at any moment.
My mother is 'afraid to fly' The last time she got on an airline jet, she walked past the captain who welcomed her aboard. She stopped and told him... "I'm afraid to fly" And the cool captain said to her... "Ma'am you just sit in your seat and relax, I'll do the flying" That is the best comeback I've ever heard to the 'afraid to fly' statement :)
@@jason38800 The best comeback? Go to flight school. There is nothing in the world like flying when you see it from the cockpit and learn what it takes to fly. Nothing, and I mean nothing, compares to being up there responsible for defying gravity. Planes love to fly. And if you ever want to lose yourself completely to the now, fly.
I was a nervous flyer, because I didn't know what was going on in this metal tube with wings and jet engines. Then I started reading, learning and I gradually developed interest in aviation. Then I started flying virtually in Flight Sim and learn how to operate an aircraft on most basic level. That gave me confidence and I'm really comfortable during the flights. Most of our fears are a result of lack of knowledge.
I think people are more afraid of the machine than the pilots. It is incredibly difficult for a plane to come down. They are inspected literally with a magnifying ultrasound regularly. They have numerous backup redundancy systems for all critical components. They are designed to take off and climb with one engine out at their maximum weight. They reliably and accurately auto land in bad visibility. They can sustain multiple lightning strikes without issue. The biggest risk in any modern airliner is the humans flying it.
That might be true of domestic flights, but what about international ones? Who enforces regs internationally? Some countries cant enforce basic laws, let alone the tech/regular inspections.
Love this! And if I may add, planes are tested to the point of destruction before they are even cleared to carry passengers. They are one of THE MOST sophisticated machines in creation. 🙂
I actually have a real phobia of flying and took a flight from Heathrow to Bangkok on a 777 and because I was drunk, everything felt fine as we took off and I didn't look at the window once the hole flight and it was 11 hours 😅
I developed sudden fear of flying a few years ago, which was very strange as by that point I had lived in three continents and travelled to more than 40 countries. Watching videos like this helps me but when turbulence hits I forget everything and think I'm going down.
Same happened to me but apparently anxiety in other areas of your life can seep into things you love. I developed anxiety from stress never thought that anxiety would turn into a little aerophobia
@@navig8theway very well said. I enjoy flying and even the turbulence sometimes . However sometimes we are overwhelmed with stress from life in general and then it certainly can seep into other areas of your life , even affecting things you once enjoyed . Everything is a state of mind !
Exactly. I remember my first flight in 2017 I was cool as a cucumber. Then in 2018 I had a year from hell, lost the job where I felt very safe, had to frantically search for a new one, I succeeded but my sense of self was broken. I lost the ground under my feet for a while there and that was enough to send me into a different state of mind where I always feel like the worst can happen. I lost the feeling of safety and never had it since then. Next flight in 2019 I was paralyzed the whole time and it's only getting worse.
Many years back I was a very nervous flyer. But then I took a job that required monthly flights. I got over the fear very quickly, and now I love it. I think the repeated exposure helps to conquer the nerves.
Yes that helps. When I was in the armed services I was terrified of parachute training but after several jumps I got over it and loved the experience. Most people who have a phobia of flying have let them self get into a state over years of thinking.
Dave Glo When i was little i used to *LOVE* flights i went over 5 times...But i grew old and older and i became very curious about *how planes crash*.My mom told me there is 1 out of a 1000 chances a plane can crash. And she told me that the plane is one of the most SAFEST rides...But i'm stil terrified...
Tae Kook The chances of you being in an air crash in an airplane is 1 in 11,000,000, while for the safest airlines the chance you will be in an air crash in an airplane is 1 in 60,000,000! Think about that, the chance of getting in a car crash is about 1 in 8400.
@@natedavis824 it's the feeling part that makes my palms sweat. Deep down I know that everything's gonna be fine, otherwise I wouldn't get on the plane, but the anxiety and fear is still nuts.
MrSkinnyWhale I understand that. I used to have a lot of anxiety around flying, but learning about all the facts of flying and why it’s such a safe method of travel helped me alleviate those fears. So sometimes, I feel like those same facts that helped me might help others.
Even if they tried, doing a barrel roll in a aircraft so massive would be hard, more like the plane would stall before then and fall backwards or forwards and then gain momentum again depending on how high up the plane is.
First time I flew at an age of 6, I started to scream and was scared. Today I have my FAA commercial license and working on getting the european one. Never let the fair control you!
NorPilot Iqbali I loved flying until I had a terrible car accident. I remember the impact and most things even though someone else died. I had a long time away in a hospital and when I flew home and the turbulence hit .... my brain does the mathematical impact with the speed of the aircraft. I spend the whole time on planes fighting this. It’s awful but I still fly
I went on a course that was led by this man and his colleagues. I used to have to be heavily medicated to even step on a plane. I have NEVER worried since, and actually enjoy turbulence now it adds interest to a flight.
What medication were you on for flying previously? I'm at the point where I need something, but not sure what. Take off is the most stressful thing for me, its awful. Is there anything that can knock you out for longer flights (2+ hrs)?
@@malikastone I chew chamomile tea bags!!!!! Only in turbulence... while praying... I have a little science and a whole lot of imagination! Imagination usually wins!!!!
Before my first flight (11 hours in the air!), I looked up online everything that I could find: from the inside of the airplane to the layout of the airport. It helps, if you know in advance everything that you can know. We are only afraid of the unknown.
Mulinaster -Hahaha :) If you learn how you can defend yourself against a bear, will your fear not diminish? If you analyse the two fears, are they not two different "kinds" of fears? Why are you more afraid of a plane flight than of a car ride, while getting into a car is much more dangerous than getting into a plane? Your fear of flying is not based on "rational" reasons. Getting to know all about flying before you get on your plane, will (should...) make you more "mindful" of the entire experience. That "mindfulness" should (should...) lower your fear of flying, because you will (should...) realise that there isn't much to be afraid of. What is your fear? To die in a plane crash, right? Well, how many people are going to die in a car crash today? And how many in a plane crash? Do you see what I mean? Your mind, spirit is in charge of yourself, not your emotions. Become the master of your emotions (fear). Mindfulness (the opposite of "mindless") is the key. Become aware of everything - NOT of your fear (duh), but of everything around you that is causing it. You will realise that much of your fear comes from not knowing enough about the plane flight.
Sir, you changed my life with this knowledge several years ago when I was flying regularly and had been using increasing doses of either booze or tranquilizers when I could get them. Knowing that the plane is designed to stay up there changed everything for me. And now I'm having my 6 year old listen to you to overcome HIS fear of flying. Thank you for your service.
I agree. Before I was never scared, flying for years but after the nat geo I have developed such fear and I could cry sometimes. It's terrible. These documentaries are only good in educational purposes for people working on improving safety and mechanics and cabin crew, not passengers! It only creates fears unless they show that they all survived
That is literally how my fear originated, though it was some channel here on RU-vid. Didn’t think it’d affect me in any way until I experienced my first turbulence on a flight (coincidentally right in the period I was consuming most of this content). I used not to be overly scared of flying, now I’m at the point where I will straight have a panic attack if the airplane starts bouncing. I wish I never watched that stuff in the first place, I can’t “unwatch” it now...
Alerts for the crew to get ready for takeoff or landing, or seatbelt signs depending on the sound. In short, it's to tell the people in the cabin when it is safe and when it is not safe to be wandering around the aisles.
The biggest fear of flying I have is just mechanical issues. My car has broken down enough to know that things break regardless of how well you maintain them. Key idea here is your 30,000 feet in the air in an airplane.
Where are you people when I need you?? YES!!!! THIS COMMENT IS 100% TRUE FOR ME!! I don't care about all of the statistics and what they say! One bolt in that plane is missing, and its a goner. I watched a whole air crash investigation on it. That whole plane went down because of a size of a metal screw was wrong. That sealed the deal for me. That's it. Not flying, sorry.
I knowing that flying is safe, I've been flying since I was like 2. However, what gives me anxiety is that there was somebody out there like myself who has also been flying for a long time and also felt safe but that airplane crashed and that person died regretting the decision of stepping foot into that aircraft. It's just a scary thought.
I hear you but remember a lot of people die doing what you have done before and you didn’t think about it. Like an example, driving, walking, breathing, etc.
I love flying! Flew from the US to Europe and Canada for years, love the views from the heavens and discovering more of our beautiful planet. Being a pilot must be fantastic
Here 8 years later. I have super bad anxiety with flying, and for me personally its that I have no control that scares me. If my car breaks down I can stop it and get out, but if my plane brakes I can't do anything and I can't get out.
As someone that used to have a fear of flying, here is a list of things more likely to happen than dying in a plane crash: Becoming President of the United States, dying from a meteorite strike, winning an oscar, winning an olympic gold medal, drowning in your bathtub, dating a millionaire, writing a NY times bestseller, dying in a tornado, meeting someone who speaks cherokee, living to 100, dying from a lightning strike, dying from scalding hot water, dying from food poisoning, dying from falling off a ladder (lol) and dying from falling out of your own bed (lol). Happy flying!
I don't like heights, but I love to travel. This keeps me getting on planes time and time again. Take-off and landing are the most dangerous parts of any flight. If something's going to go wrong, that's typically when it will. Pilots don't want to die anymore than you do. If they fear that something will go wrong during landing, they'll figure out an alternative. During flight, the plane may shake, rattle, rock, and bounce. Any pilot will tell you that turbulence is more annoying than it is dangerous. If a pilot thought that there was real danger, he or she wouldn't have taken off in the first place, would've changed course, or would've diverted to a different airport. Rarely does this happen.
oh dear knowledge is power. I don't want to know anything about flying. I dont want to know how high. I don't want to know how fast. Just knock me out with medication and wake me up when we get there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
that happened to me, I told some guy I was afraid of flying, turns out he was a young doctor he gave me a pill and I was asleep 5minutes into the flight and slept the whole time. coolest doctor ever!
I used to fly all the time when I was a working musician. Problem being that to be able to go through with it I had to either down a handful of benzos or get totally drunk. It was becoming bad for my health. I changed my job and gave up flying in 2000. Feel so much better ;)
i think the concept of flying through the air at 500mph in an air conditioned tube will always be scary for some. But when you consider how many planes take off and land all around the world on a daily basis. its astonishing really just how safe it is!
I wasn't as bad as some other people who can't get on flights but it was pretty bad. I was nervous the week before the flight(especially the last couple days), the flying itself felt like torture, and I had the fear in the back of my head during the trip. About last year, I was going to take a 8 hour flight to Europe. I didn't want to be as anxious the whole time so I thought I should help myself leading up to the flight. I meditated for like 25min a day for 10 days before going on the flight. The fear of flying just kinda disappeared on that flight. I've went on 4 flights since then and it has just become easier each time. The fear of crashing has become a lot like other ways of dying, yeah it would be terrifying for it to happen but until I'm actually faced with the situation I don't worry about it. I think how most with a fear of flying could take a big step toward relief by learning to release anxiety in general, you'd be surprised by how much stress our bodies and faces are holding during these situations. remember that no matter how much your brain convinces you there is real danger that it's just a trick. Best of luck
here is something you should know you're more likely to get killed walking to your corner shop to get a coke than anything bad happening in a plane have you been in a plane before
+Norwegian Boeing 737-800 please answer My question : You said It is more likely to get killed in Car or crossing The Street But does statistics count The fact that There are far more cars, billions of cars on earth than planes in the sky everyday? And we drive cars every every single day, night, hours. ..And when a car crash you are luckily even to survive. when a plane crash. .mmm..nope! rarely! when a car crash 1 or 2 People die. ..when a plane crash 300 People die! do statistics count that?
I dont think flying is what people are afraid of but rather lack of control and the idea of falling thousands of feet to your doom. It may be statistically safer than other forms of travel but when it does happen its beyond your control and its terrifying.
@@LineOfThy you can try your best. You're behind the wheel at least. Be careful. And if you do it's sudden. Boom, crash, knocked out. Your dead. You don't spend 5 minutes plummeting down helplessly as your life flashes through your eyes.
@@LineOfThySorry but the car crashes that one party couldn’t control outnumber plane crashes by orders of magnitude, and to say otherwise is disrespectful to everyone who has been killed by a drunk or reckless driver.
I've been flying since age of 9 (45 now) Dozens and dozens of flights. I fly several times per month. Suddenly I'm terrified of it and have no idea why.
I'm a student pilot so I'm not entirely sure if my comment will have any meaning to you, but I'd honestly say to fly with another pilot just to make you more confident I guess, flying solo (if you are) can be more tense. That's coming from my little experience 😂. Join some flying groups on facebook and talk to other pilots about it, I'm sure some could relate to you. But most importantly never give up with your flying, never.
My dad is an airline pilot and if it is any consolation, major airlines do not hire inexperienced pilots. If you go on a regional airline, those pilots tend to have less experience because they need to start somewhere. However, even those pilots must go through extensive training before they they their license. If you are a nervous flier, it might help if you avoid the regional airlines because you would know that your are getting more experienced pilots.
After that German pilot locked his captain out of the cabin and crashed into the mountainside refukatuins changed. Pilots are no longer allowed solo in the cockpit.
It's funny how people can drive 60mph on a side by side road, but won't get into a plane with controlled traffic, and with every flight, they get a full check before a flight.
Squeecy, that is a good point! :) You really helped me feel better about flying in four months! I have a crippling fear of flying!! Thank you for your insight and wisdom!!! :) Btw, my name is Grace. I hope you have a wonderful day! I will because of you!
For me it’s because I’m not in control, and I can’t make the decisions if something does go wrong. My life is in somebody else hands that I don’t like, even though these guys are pretty amazing I still can’t get my head around it....
I look at it like this. They may not care about us as passengers but they're not about to let anything happen to their precious airplane if they can help it.
no because most people are not very smart... they drive calmly and they cause horrible accidents because they are distracted so I NEVER trust other people's emotions.
This guy is so calming. I'm from Canada but live in Australia so I have to fly very long distances to visit home, and I have really bad anxiety every time.
Everyone here talking about “what if the plane crashes” You have a lot higher chance of crashing and dying in your car than dying in a plane but everyone still chooses to drive their car everyday.
This is the video that completely changed the way I look at turbulence. Those of us in the trucking business know these rigs come with a shake or two when on road doing your job. Now when I am on a flight I look at turbulence as a completely harmless and normal part of air travel.
I flew to Bangor Maine last Tuesday and I was so scared, I prayed countless times and had tons of anxiety. I was bored earlier so I watched some videos of famous plane crashes and now I’m scared. So I am now watching this video to make me feel better, because I have a flight tomorrow at 5:30am and I am really nervous. Even tho I have been flying since I was a baby, just the feeling of being so high up in the air and not having any clue what is going in the plane scares me. No matter how many facts or things I hear about airplanes not crashing I still get scared. But watching this video helped reduce some anxiety about flying. Thank you 😊🫶
I'm flying to New York in August. I'm already feeling queasy about the flights every time I think about it. I absolutely hate flying. Whenever I'm actually on my vacation, I feel like I can't enjoy it as much as I would like to because I'm dreading the flight back home. I now have a son that I am not taking with me. I think that will make my fear of flying worse. The thought of dying and leaving him without a mom makes me sad. Also, did I mention I have a phobia of heights? I actually have a physical reaction. Wish this video helped. But it doesn't.
I am back from my trip. I had a horrible cold flying there and back. But I landed safely all flights. I took a sleeping pill for my flight there and back. I actually feel a little better about flying. I took red eye flights so I could force myself to sleep. I wouldn't say I'm cured, but I found a way for me to just ignore it. (Side note, they asked me if I could change my seat to the side door to the aircraft to assist someone if needed, I adamantly said no!) I'm glad to be home!
Every time I fly ill say I am fine and used to it but once that plane takes off back to usual mode. A metalic bird I call it. Your life is on pause for those hours.
Statistics are statistics but anything is possible. The fact is that it DOES happen, sadly. Most (like me) mainly fear the fact that if something was to happen, there is nothing we can really do but sit, wait, and hope that we survive.
If you saw how cars are built and how aircraft are built you would never get in a car again ,its a bit like digging a gold nugget out of the ground and putting it along side a solid gold swiss watch such is the difference Fly happy now
I sincerely appreciate to watch this video. It’s my weakness that I get worried before flying. Thanks for posting this video as I am flying today with a flight of two hours. 🙏🙏🙏
+PilotStudios Channel As a passenger boarding the plane you think about those crashes that happen so rarely. Also why do airlines change the number of the flight after the crash ? Is that because people worry less with another number ?
+SkandikFilm it's mostly a pysocological thing, say for AA191. It crashed, and it would feel "tainted". Also, it's for historical purposes. Say you google AA191 because your dad is flying on it to get home. U see the images of the fire and wreckage, then u see the status of the aircraft that's flying at that time. For more info u can google it.
