I love how Maverick “teaches” Hangman. He doesn’t just beat him, he does it in a way that reinforces why his earlier behavior was wrong. Love this movie so much.

Hangman is the “Maverick” of Tom Gun Maverick. In the original movie, it was Maverick who abandoned his wingmen. In this movie, Hangman is the dangerous one and abandoned his wingmen, hince his callsign. As such, Maverick literally sees his younger self in Hangman and doesn’t want to have him repeat his past mistakes.

That scene reminded me of a scene in the first Top Gun movie with a similar response. Maverick got cocky and abandoned his lead in a mock dogfight to chase after Viper only to have Jester sneak behind him and shoot him down. Then Goose responded with "The Defense Department regrets to inform you that your sons are dead because they were stupid."

I'm a former F-4 and F-16 pilot. Some of what you see here isn't the way it's really done but this is still a kick-ass scene for me. The aerial film work is incredible. When I saw it in theater, without realizing it I caught myself doing the muscle work that a fighter pilot does to counter the gs that you see the taking place on the screen. It was great work on the part of those who made the movie.

As mentioned in a quote-on-quote 'official video' with this scene, it's worth noting that Rooster was already putting on his mask the moment Maverick said today's lesson is 'Dogfighting'. Guy already knew he was the real deal, the others would learn that the hard way. *Edit:* For whatever it's worth, thanks for the almost 3K Likes. :)

he definitely knew what maverick was capable of. i think the only reason he got 'killed' in the first few training days is because a. he wasn't used to dogfighting (they said the newer pilots didn't do it much) and b. it had been so long since he saw maverick fly.
@ThePointblank
@ThePointblank 2 года назад
@@jenna_baggett His callsign of 'Rooster' explains what happened; it is because he has a tendency to wait in a fight for an opportunity and be too cautious, much like how a rooster would wait for the sun to rise to crow. 5:55 "Leaving your Wingman. There's a strategy I haven't seen in a while." Haha. This line carries weight. For those who don't remember, in the first movie, Maverick leaves his Wingman during training to go after a target. You can see that Hangman is a reincarnation of Maverick in spirit. This is reaffirmed when the song gets subtly louder as Hangman chases Maverick into the sun. Daltery's lyrics "Meet the new boss...... Same as the old boss...." hits us perfectly. This movie surprised me. It's well thought out and beautifully edited. I can't really say the same about the first one. It was a fun summer action movie at best.

There wouldn't be a film experience like this again with the realism of no CGI but with real F-18s, real speed, and real g's. That's what Tom Cruise said in every showing of Top Gun: Maverick as he did it bringing the best film experience he could for all of us fans of the original and now the new one. Best part about the "Chicken Spiral", Maverick knew Rooster's limits all to well and knew exACTly how to push him beyond those. It WAS working to the advantage of Rooster as, he had won the game of Chicken and got behind Maverick but, he just wouldn't take the last step and drop down to his altitude to and take the shot. Had he done just that much, it probably would have been Maverick on that tarmac afterwards instead...😩

I used to always think of Tom Cruise as this self-absorbed, cocky action star that would never interest or surprise me. Out comes Oblivion and im pretty surprised, never imagining that Cruise would star in a sci-fi movie, and a good one too. And ever since then i really cant help but to be a fanboy, it feels like Cruise entered his own renaissance of movie making and im enjoying the ride.

Whats fun about this scene is that these arn't new shithead rookie pilots. These are Top Gun graduates. Which lends its self well as to just how experienced Maverick is lol. What I also enjoy about these scene is their use of real world dogfighting tactics.

I know right. Among those I noticed he used a tactic from all the way back in WWII: Dive with the sun directly behind him.

Just watching that podcast (with Top Gun Instructor and Navy Seal) and he definitely said that the best instructor will most often beat the best student

@eedd sdsd I saw the same interview. It's skill, but skill from practice. Instructors are in the air every single day. Officers before coming in are on duty and maybe in the air once a week and when they are, it's not dog fighting. The gap in skill is just hours in the air.

@@muRiboflavin still maverick isn’t a teacher he only came back to top gun recently though I guess 30 years of flying and already being gifted makes up for it

They should have shown more of Halo in her training sequence. There wasn’t enough of the other pilots fighting Maverick.

I love this sequence because it helps establish Maverick's credibility with a squad of who believes they earned their status and everything else. It helps sell the idea that only Maverick has both the technical and social skill to the very kind of person he used to be.

When Mav throws away the book on the F-18, this is a call back to the origin of the Top Gun school when a select group of F-4 Phantom pilots knew that they had to push their aircraft beyond regulations and see what they were capable of to gain an edge in air-to-air combat in Vietnam.

Too many became reliant on missiles so top gun was created to reteach bfm and it worked really well

At the time US Navy pilots had been banned from doing dog fights in training because some desk pilot believed that the next war would be thought at beyond visual range so it was not worth the inevitable training accidents , however the Royal Navy agreed to buy the F4 in the early 60s and started sending their experienced Sea Vixen pilots who were well practiced in dog fighting to fly with US Navy Squadrons so they couod learn all about the Phantom while McD worked out how to fit RR Speys into it . The result was that more than a few air force jokeys who thought they would have some fun bouncing a hapless Navy F4, got a nasty surprise when the Navy jet came back at them with total aggression.

This movie was 1,000 X's better than I ever imagined, and I imagined it would be well below 0. As someone who grew up with Top Gun and someone who is sick of all the remakes/reboots, I was dead set against having anything to do with this one. I saw clips like this (not fully) and curiosity got the better of me. I'm so glad it did because Maverick is one of my Top 5 now.

4:20 Did you noticed how Rooster was in perfect position to shoot Maverick down and get the honors ? Instead, he chose to enter the kill zone and tell his Wingman to break out the situation even if it means he will loose the exercice. That's why Phoenix say "And now, You know a litle something about Rooster" meaning, "He will nerver let you down, Respect him".

As someone who works in the industry doing animation and pre-viz this movie has set a new bar for exciting, inventive, cinematic and just plain fun shot design and setup. We're going to be copying in CGI what they did traditionally here for years to come. It's crazy how well they tell a story and how easy it is to follow without feeling stale. Can't see their mouths all the time, the planes look the same, but you know EXACTLY what's happening, how they're feeling, etc. Such a solid movie. I saw it twice and witnessed standing ovations both times.
