Venturing offshore into the deep blue waters off the Kona Coast of Hawaii, we spotted a pod of short-finned pilot whales (Globicephala macrorhynchus). This group was very chill and allowed us to float on the surface as they swam beneath us. Per usual they had an oceanic whitetip shark following them in case any scraps of food got left behind.
Short-finned pilot whales are one of the five "blackfish" species of oceanic dolphins that can be found off the Kona Coast. The other blackfish include false killer whales, killer whales, melon-headed whales, and pygmy killer whales.
