Do you know it was based on a Peugeot 4 cyl dohc design of pre WWI by 3 young French Engineers?

@@stevefowler2112 The Miller/Offenhauser was inspired by the Peugeot DOHC 16V, but not "based" on the Peugeot design. The Offy's unique design had a barrel crankcase and a head setup that had no head gasket, so the Offy was not only powerful, it was anvil-tough and about as unbreakable as possible to make an engine.

@@63DW89A Agreed but you are mincing words...it was largely based on the Peugeot design. Having said that it has winning record unlike any other engine family and I am a great admirer of the Offy.

@@stevefowler2112 I too am a great admirer of the Offy, for the same reason: the astounding winning record. I am a "Technical Type" who probably does try to be too precise in word description, so your observation is accurate. My point is that although the Miller-Offy, derived the DOHC 16V head arrangement directly from the Peugeot, the Miller-Offy expanded considerably upon the Peugeot design with a gasket-less unit head arrangement and a barrel crankcase to make an incredibly strong engine. Now, using the Rolls-Royce Merlin 1650 as an example, the U.S. Packard built Merlin 1650 was directly based on the RR design so that the two were essentially the same engines, even though the Packard was not a clone of the RR, due to subtle changes made to enhance mass production of the U.S. built Merlin engines. The Merlin engine concept rightfully belongs to RR, and although Packard made excellent changes in order to enhance mass production, I've always argued that to be fair and accurate, the Packard Merlin 1650 should be called the Rolls-Royce Packard Merlin 1650, simply because the base design concept that made a great V12 aircraft engine was purely RR and not Packard. Maybe I am being too picky here, but to my technical sense, it does make a big difference. Peugeot rightfully deserves the credit and respect for the DOHC 16V concept, but Miller-Offenhauser also deserve the credit and respect for having the technical-engineering-conceptual ability to expand the Puegeot idea into an even more advanced and stronger engine design.
