There are lots of movies that show what pilots are doing, but not many that talk about what happens with air traffic control. But with all the ATC vs Pilots videos I have been doing some of you asked me to do this... I hope you enjoy it.

I hate to break it to you, but all of us controllers work daily on the basis of “anticipated separation.” It’s taught that way for the “safe and EXPEDITIOUS flow of traffic.” Sometimes it doesn’t work, and you obviously fix it in the moment before it becomes an event. But yes, by the book there was more than one separation error in this clip
@moi01887
@moi01887 3 года назад
Yeah... I haven't seen the movie but based on this video that's the most "Hollywood" part of all. Air traffic controllers have all sorts of rules and procedures and training to keep things safe... it's not a game to see who can get away with spacing aircraft the closest. It really paints a bad and misleading picture of ATC to the public.
@adb012

@Bugdriver49
@Bugdriver49 3 года назад
Kelsey should have pointed out that that EVERY aircraft going into ATL is on an IFR flight plan....and, unless and until a flight has called the "airport, or field in sight" ATC is totally responsible for separation of ALL aircraft under their control...If an aircraft reports the "field in sight" that aircraft can now be cleared for a "visual" approach and can maneuver to land. Even if you do not have the "airport in sight" you can still be cleared for a visual approach if you have another aircraft in sight that has already been cleared for a visual approach..... approach will point out traffic you are following in sequence.....if you call that traffic in sight...approach can tell you " follow traffic, maintain separation, cleared for visual approach. My WHOLE point for this diatribe was the controller saying "maintain separation"...this is said to tell you that they (ATC) are no longer responsible for your separation with the traffic you're following. This ability is important at high usage airports as the minimum separation for aircraft on a visual approach is far less than that required when the weather is crappy...and so the airport is far more efficient. It's movies like this that got me banned from family movie night if an aircraft were involved in the movie...lol OH....Kelsey, I never flew the 74, but do have a number of type ratings in my 30 year career....I've been retired for a number of years now...but when DID they change "taxi into position and hold" to " line up and wait?" Is that a Euro thing?? My international experience is limited to Mex. and Can. but they did not use that expression there.....help me out here????

In that case, even with that idiot on ATC the landing plane would have just said something like "Stellar 841 going around" after noticing the departing plane rolling on the intersecting runway. But with a sane and realistic person on ATC, the whole situation wouldn't exist, if they gave a landing clearance for one plane they won't let another one begin rolling on the intersecting runway until it's clear, and unless the airport is super busy runway 31L wouldn't even be in use at all. There's a crazy amount of traffic a competent ATC can pack into just two parallel runways, and with JFK having two parallel pairs they'd just pick a direction that works best with the wind at the time and have everyone land and take off at the same heading.

"Clear to land" never means "You must land." I would hope a pilot "Cleared to land" watching another aircraft coming down an intersecting runway would perform the "Go Around" even if the tower kept saying "You're cleared to land." This depicts pilots as stupid and helpless, and while there is the occasional inept pilot out there, it is beyond my comprehension that there would be a pilot so stupid as to see that situation developing and not abort the landing. Ditto with the departing aircraft...there isn't a pilot out there who would not be on the reversers before trying to "punch it." Dumb, dumb, dumb movie.

One thing I cought: Asking tower "Boeing 123, ready for takeoff" is an example of bad phraseology. The word takeoff should only be used with takeoff clearance and the readback. Otherwise use "ready for departure". This makes clear that you are ready, but not in the process of takeoff yet. It also helps to make the keyword takeoff more recognisable to catch for others and raises situational awareness. So that when they hear takeoff, they know it is a clearance or a plane taking off. Nothing else. For example if you are about to cross the runway and hear takeoff on the radio, you may be alarmed that there is a takeoff crossing your path and can clear the situation befor entering the runway or the other guy getting too much speed.

Not how I've understood it. In the investigation of the Tenerife crash in 1977, it was noted that when the controller gave the KLM crew their ATC clearance, he said something like 'after takeoff, fly to the PAPA beacon...' or something to that effect, which may have contributed to that captain believing he was cleared for takeoff. It was decided that the word "takeoff" should only be used when the plane is actually ready or cleared to do so. When I fly (Cessnas, not 747s), I use 'departure' first (ie, "Request taxi to the active runway for a north departure to 3000 feet"), but when I'm holding short of the runway and ready to go, I will report "Ready for takeoff" on the grounds that I'm now set to do so. There's nothing confusing or ambiguous about telling a controller you are ready for takeoff - it is then their prerogative to give you takeoff clearance or not.

A small point of nitpicking though, at 05:50 you explain what a pilot could say when he thinks the controller forgot to issue the take off clearance and you say the phrase "boeing123 on runway 4L, ready for take off". It should be ".... ready for DEPARTURE", regardless of whether you're on the runway or taxiway, since following the 747 crash in tenerife the word "take off" is to only ever be used when actual take off clearances are issued, read back or cancelled to avoid any potential confusion, in any other situation it should be "departure". Kelsey, I love your content, but I've got to clear up a misconception about supervisors in ATC overriding controllers. That just doesn't happen except in very, very rare cases. You're not the only pilot that holds that view. It seems to be very common. Supervisors are just there monitoring the operation. They may offer general guidance or help a controller who needs it, but they would not directly override what the controller does. The majority of the time if you hear someone override a controller, it's because there is training in progress. The overriding controller is actually the instructor overriding the trainee. The way the ATC radio equipment works, the instructor jack has priority over the trainee jack, so if the instructor keys up, their transmission goes out, not the trainee's. Any other time if you hear another controller speaking, it's just a routine controller swap.

You know, I really like the way this movie presents the relevant information in a clear visual way. That at 2:08 were it switches from the readout screen to the overhead view of the airport, but keeps the data from the readout screen for a bit to clue the viewers in on what that information means, and at 2:17 where you get the predictions with the little tags by the planes with their information is also a nice way to visualize what the ATC guy is seeing and how he's expecting things to work out.

I was in a similar situation like about 30 years ago. LAX to FRA on a Lufthansa 747-400 and a small single engine aircraft was crossing the runway, just as we were landing. We were much closer to the runway, as this landing plane was, I could already see the runway out of my window. "Punch it" does not work like this. Not even on a very light 747, that is landing, so it has a lot of extra power to add. And it has a lot of power to add. But it felt like the engines were trying to go around without us for what felt like minutes. Probalbly only 20 seconds max, before the full power of those engines hit. And it really surprised me, the way I was pushed into my seat then. But we still had no problem to go around, never touched down and climbed away from the airport. So I am sure, if a pilot sees another aircraft out of the window, still being a few hundred feet in the air, they would just "punsh it" and go around, no matter what ATC would tell them. Because pilots do not seam like close calls at all. And that I could tell from our pilot on the PA when he informed us what had just happened. He was still quite professional, but I could tell he wanted to punch that pilot of the small plane in the face more than just once. And he did call that pilot (in German) a soon to be ex-pilot. Funny how pilots, that are responsible for hundreds of lifes, are capable of making good decissions by themselves thousands of times without hardly ever making any mistakes. It is almost like they are trained to do this. To me the most Hollywood part is that those pilots would even ask, if they are "still" clear to land. If you can see another plane on a possible collision course, you will never ask, you will just "punsh it". I am pretty sure my Lufthansa pilots did not ask anybody what they should do, they just "punched it". And that puts me into a very elite club of passangers, that know what max power feels like on a 747-400. And it is impressive. It comes with a large delay, but when it comes it comes hard. Stay (and fly) safe Dirk

(6:25) Speaking of runways; internationally, all runways are 2-digit, so it would be 04 and not just 4. So if you get just "runway 4 L", then a digit got lost in the transmission. If the airport only have one RWY X4 L, it's easy to know which, since RWY 4X L wouldn't be valid. So I'm really curious how this is dealt with when American pilots fly internationally.
@davi.medrade
@davi.medrade Год назад
I often watch a live stream of the São Paulo/Guarulhos International Airport (GRU/SBGR) showing both runways and radio communications at TWR frequency. Up until recently that airport's runways were 09 and 27, and yes, usually the controllers would say, for example “American one-two-three, wind is one-eight-zero at zero-six, QNH one-zero-one-seven, cleared to land, runway zero-niner left”, but it wasn't uncommon for them to drop the leading zeros (like “wind is one-eight-zero at six [knots]” and “runway niner left”). Now the runways are 10/28, and usually they'll say “one-zero” but sometimes they'll just say “ten”. Though from what I've heard, those kinds of deviations are much more common coming from the pilots than from controllers. In fact one thing I've noticed is that controllers tend to require pilots to repeat in which runway they're landing once they get the final clearance, even if it has been mentioned before. Like in this fictitious, slightly convoluted example (I won't spell out the numbers here for the sake of brevity): P: “Guarulhos Tower, American 123, ILS Yankee, runway 10 left” C: “American 123, Guarulhos Tower. Continue approach runway 10 left, stand by for landing clearance; altimeter setting 1017” P: “Continuing approach to 10 left, standing by. American 123” [preceding plane lands and clears the runway] C: “American 123, wind is 180 at 10, cleared to land, runway 10 left” P: “Cleared to land, American 123” C: “Runway 10 left.” P: “Cleared to land runway 10 left, American 123”

Ever notice scenes in cheesy old movies and shows in which it's obvious that they felt they had to overdub some extra lines, after shooting a scene, that are really just explanatory declarations, so that the audience would better understand what they're seeing. Typically, it'll be something like "Oh look, that's a bomb. I _guess_ I'd better throw _the bomb_ out the window." ~~ Knowing this, I think it's clear that half of what he's called out here is really Hollywood _translating_ the reality into something that general audiences would easily understand. Like "continue" (13:04). The lines in the movie are meant as a more verbose translation of that. This is all an indication of what kind of audience this movie was intended for. Better movies would find a way to solve the problem here in a more clever way.

Hi Kelsey. Just wanted to say I date a pilot and we talk a lot about his job and aviation in general. I find myself watching a lot of your videos (as well as other aviation content) and I love it. I find it endlessly entertaining for a civilian like myself. I love how you break down all the jargon. It’s provided me with many funny quips to throw at my bf. Like when he’s yelling at me when we’re mountain biking I can now retort “I hear you 5x5” thanks for that gem. I’m not looking forward to it but I’m ready to yell out we have a 7700 to him in an emergency. Let’s hope that never happens. But I can assure you the next time he’s in the dog house (which thankfully rarely happens) That I’m issuing him a number to call acknowledge when ready to copy!! 😆
