Biohome Ultimate on Amazon UK: geni.us/GDV8oLd

Another very affordable filter from All Pond Solutions which has an equivalent in the US to keep my viewers over the pond happy.
Considering how much media this filter holds, flow rate and features it packs a lot into a relatively small package - I love the idea of a removable 'cartridge' which has media baskets which can be filled with media of choice.
Good stuff.
WHAT IS A FULL CYCLE?
If someone tells you the aquarium nitrogen cycle ends with the production of nitrate that is incorrect - please read on
A full cycle is completed by bacteria - the aerobic part of biological filtration which processes ammonia to nitrite and nitrite to nitrate followed by an anaerobic part which processes nitrate into soluble nitrogen which bubbles off to the atmosphere.
Therefore it requires a suitable amount of excellent quality filter media to be able to provide the environment for both aerobic AND anaerobic bacteria - that is what Biohome ultimate does perfectly but even with such good media there are limitations and we recommend the following amounts for different stocking scenarios:
(1 US gallon = 3.8 litres)
(1kg = 2.2 lbs)
Average community tropical aquarium = 1kg per 100 litres
Average coldwater aquarium = 1kg - 1.5kg per 100 litres
Predator aquarium = 1.5kg - 2kg per 100 litres
Large cichlid aquarium = 1.5kg - 2kg per 100 litres
Malawi / Tanganyikan aquarium = 1.5kg - 2kg per 100 litres
Marine aquarium = 1.5kg - 2kg per 100 litres
Average mixed fish pond = 1kg per 200 litres
Average koi pond = 1kg per 150 litres
You may be disagreeing with the above figures but remember that they are for a FULL CYCLE not half a job - achieving 0 ammonia and 0 nitrite is quite easy since aerobic bacteria grows freely on any surface but the anaerobic bacteria responsible for COMPLETING the cycle needs more a specialized habitat.
Size a filter properly, set it up sensibly and you will have perfect water - it's that simple....and your filter won't be the dreaded 'Nitrate factory'.
This series of videos is all about trying to squeeze more efficiency out of internal and external aquarium filters which generally have a limited filtering capacity - If you have a filter you'd like me to feature in a video then please contact me on:

There is room to add 350 more grams into and around the uv light and intake area, which water does pass up through after passing through the foam as it then goes through the media baskets. I popped some small course foam stoppers in to stop the media falling into the main foam/media area when taking out the baskets. All in all I got just under 1kg in! I also used course foam on the intake, medium and fine inside and a polishing pad before the media. I also blocked off the top water out put and left pin holes to let air escape... so all the water passes through the 4 stage mechanical foams, then through 950grams of media!

I've got one of these, filled the void around the UV with Eheim Mech and used coarse and medium foam in the main cartridge. It came with a bag of carbon and two bags of sintered glass balls which look a lot like substrat Pro. Pretty decent filter with good flow... Had to stop using it as I had a few guppies decide to commit suicide by swimming up the outlet and getting trapped in the filter.

This is marketed as sunsun in my country. I’ve used the smaller 500-model for a few months. It’s very well built and designed for what I paid for. Design is similar to my aquaclear 20, but with many nice touches shown in the video like filter basket and telescopic tube.

I have this filter from all pond solutions, it is a very good filter for actually filtering the water but I wouldn’t recommend if you have it located in your room like I do as it is a loud filter and every few minutes makes a spitting sound when it gets backed up but I tend to just turn it of before I go to bed.

This filter would be much better if the UV, fine filter pad and the small outlet on the top where done away with. All a h.o.b. filter really needs is a pad or two on the bottom and a basket to hold bio media along with a self priming ( in the tank ) motor.

(my other channel) I just go with whatever comes with the filter and is easiest to remove. If you want to do away with the trays / boxes then it's all good as long as the mechanical filtration (foams and fine pad) comes before the biological media (e.g. Biohome)

I have an established tank with a gravel bed filter and a Hidom Internal Aquarium Power Filter and all the levels are great except for nitrates which go up quickly; the tap water is around 25-30ppm which is frustrating. I'd love to get rid of them and this filter looks great. My tank is 180 litres. Would this filter with the biomedia do the job of getting rid of nitrates, or is there something else I could do to get rid of nitrates with what I have already - other than the blessed water changes............? Thank you.

This filter has some serious design flaws. It would be better if the foam was stacked behind the baskets and the water flowed from the back to the front. It would be more effective and efficient if the pump was located inside of the tank thus making it self priming. The UV if it must be a feature should flow only from the bottom thus giving the water more contact time with the UV. These are clearly just my opinion but to me these would be the obvious things that should change and make a superior product.

how often would you use a uv light on a fully established system? like once a week for a hour? im getting a all ponds salutation 2000+ uv and when im happy my bacteria is established im not sure how to use it as a preventative or would you only use it when thers an issue or adding a new fish. a video explaining about what it douse and the correct way to use it would be amazing :)
@dennisvanopstal7360
@dennisvanopstal7360 4 года назад
The UV light does not harm the beneficial bacteria in the filter media. Its located before the media. And beneficial bacteria arent floating in the water. Some algae, bad bacteria, virusses, fungus (spores) and diseases do. And thats what the UV light takes care of. So it doesnt hurt. But if its really necessary in a healty tank is another discussion.
@luanlovelyman
@luanlovelyman Год назад
it looks to me that this filter has too small space for mechanical filtering, which means that youre pretty much likely to get dirt water into your biological filtering, resulting in a not optimal biological filtering due the dirt, besides for being accumulating dirt in the medias, and that is not the goal for the medias. Thats what i can see on videos but never tried one of those.
