41:30 i am a big lateral thinker & no particular expertise in this exact field…BUT why not have STARTED with trenching a 10 foot deep sump system at strategic location up stream of water table??? Then there would be NO water under good liner before you cut it…then clear for mini excavator and starting over without ground water issue!! I do enjoy your videos and effort + quality…just sharing a big thought

In principle your idea is correct- had we been aware of any potential water issues this would have been looked at and dealt with before getting into the nitty gritty of the pond build- however hindsight is a fine thing- in this instance neither myself or the owners were aware of this issue until we’d thoroughly committed ourself with starting the build. Additionally the water issue wasn’t a water table/groundwater problem and was simply dealing with an underground drainage pipe that was directing a large (larger then i’d have liked in any case) amount of water directly to the pond and as such required re-routing. 10:38 the pond viewing / sitting area should have been 45 degrees from proximal pool line…if boundary constrained…it should have smaller footprint to accommodate.
Thanks for your comment- may I ask why however? I agree that there are some simply ‘rules’ or theories that go somewhat towards making something potentially better if these rules are followed, but something as subjective as this is really down to clients preference- not to mention in this instance the seating/paving area positioning in relation to the pond had already been governed before the pond restoration was started. Having spent plenty of time sitting and watching the pond from this location I think this seating area complements the pond and is in just the right place! Best, Ed
Hi there, great question! For a stream or a cascade with minimal fall/slope then the preference would be to use once piece of liner, with no joins. If this is not possible then the liner must be glued/joined with a suitable liner welding product. However for most cascades or streams with occasional drops and falls then overlapping sections of liner without glue or bonding is absolutely fine. If you imagine turning a stair case into a waterfall and you used two sections of liner- starting from the bottom/lowest section of falls (bottoms step up) lay a section of pond liner. To overlap the next section of liner ensure that the lower section of liner (which will be under the next/upper section) is finished on the flat section of one of the steps and the overlapped piece of liner extends down to the flat section of next step below. That way water will continue to flow down the falls without leaking and without need to bond the liner. Hope that makes sense! Best, Ed

Agreed- always a shame to cover up hard work, but so much work often goes into the unseen groundwork of jobs like this. Laying the block work-although hidden-does make the shallow marginal zones all the better so was well worth doing. Wow, very impressive! Well described and clearly a man of great pond making experience. I just wonder if constructing and finishing a pond on a small site brings with it more problems related to building around existing features, drainage and housing of equipment. This site is enormous compare to my garden. BTW - cant wait to see the follow on video to this.

In my experience, apart from the difficulties involved in housing my equipment-holding tanks etc- working in smaller gardens poses no greater difficulties then larger ones. In this particular garden there’s a lot of diy drainage that’s been very poorly installed at some point in the past-I’ve never encountered so many different pipes in any of my previous excavations in years and years of digging!! Just bad luck with this one! Best, Ed
Hey ed when talking and pointing at something instead of having the camera focused on you how about focusing on the thing that you are talking about also can you have the camera closer to the work you are doing so we can actually see what it is you are working on in one of your videos you showed us a lily flower bud but we didn’t see it because you were so far away from it learn to zoom in on things so that we all get a look at what you are talking about

Very true and for larger square/rectangular ponds requiring perfect 90degree corners this method would be probably more reliable then using the speed square I was using- something I’ll prob cover in a future square build i’m sure! Thanks for sharing though! Best, Ed
Hi ed why don t you connect the drainage pipe to run in pond and then fit in a over flow pipe the other end so yo don.t get any water under liner just an idea
Hi Mark, great idea but two reasons why I didn’t (and couldn’t) do as you’ve said: 1) with no idea where this water has come from potential contaminants are a concern and so adding this water to a pond with livestock could be an issue. 2) due to the level of the drainage pipe against the pond, running water into it isn’t possible via gravity, which is why the trenching had to be carried out to the lower section of the garden where it was possible to discharge the water. Once the lower pond has been completed I shall be doing exactly what you’ve said -water draining into the lower pond and an overflow to take the excess water away! As this pond will be a natural wildlife pond I don’t have the same concerns about potential contamination. Thanks for your comment, Best, Ed

Hi there, thanks for your comment and for watching- an interesting idea, but although technically feasible (I’ve worked on many a fish farm where fish were graded in size using mechanical methods) I really wouldn’t ever see the need to go to all the effort of making such a device to help in removing large quantities of small fish- in this example the stickle backs. Not to mention that such methods really aren’t as kind to the fish as gentle manual removal once the pond has been emptied. Best, Ed

Long story-one day I’ll post a video answering such questions- but essentially I’ve always been obsessed with wildlife, horticulture and especially aquatics in general! Went on to spend almost 20 years working in various water garden and tropical fish shops and it all went from there. I’m very fortunate to be doing a job I really enjoy! Hi Ed, You guys certainly take on some jobs, how the hell you work out a reasonable accurate costing with all the hidden pitfalls, this job must have been a nightmare. If your clients are genuine people they can see the masses of extra work that the drainage problems that you have had to contend with. Surely they cant expect you to complete all that extra based on your original quote or estimate ?.. cant wait to see part two
Hi Norman, thanks for watching and your comment. For sure estimating jobs like this can be very difficult to get any level of accuracy-I always stipulate on all my estimates that pricing is subject to ground conditions- you never know what you’re going to expose when digging and what could then be involved in rectifying any potential issues, increasing the work load massively as a result-like this job! In this instance once it became obvious there was an issue with water and the pipes were exposed and it was evident any re-routing of pipe within the pond couldn’t be feasible joined back to the existing pipework I had to present my clients with two options: I could maintain a dry enough environment via my temporary sump and pump to continue the build and once the pond was filled the ground water was less likely to cause any issues, so I would then put everything back to how I found it. Option two was to re-route everything entirely-my preferred choice and the right thing to do. My clients were very understanding and happy with the extra expenses I then had to estimate for and were happy for me to do the work. From my stance I was much happier to do the extra work in the knowledge that I was safe guarding ‘my pond’ from any potential harm in the future! Every job I treat as my own pond-I’d be heart broken to know someone was having a major issue with one of my builds! And yes- my clients have been wonderful throughout, looking after Dave and I very well! Thanks for watching and for your comment, Best, Ed
