The "in-and-out" bowing technique described by Mr. Zuckerman is a huge "secret" to producing a consistently rich and dense tone. The ergonomics of the arm require this to keep the bow "square" and parallel to the string "sounding point." I've applied the principle for a long time now, but alas spent years before actually discovering this concept for myself. It think this technique is indispensable.

Mr Zukerman comes across as a true teacher; concerned for his student, giving of his knowledge, and happy within himself. Ms Baillie also comes across as a genuinely wonderful student; most willing to learn, appreciative of her teacher, and submissive to her chosen craft as a means of loving life. This was wonderful to watch.

@@wk5269 Sir: I have seen and responded to the article you highlight. Briefly, I felt Mr Zukerman's treatment of this Asian violinist was insensitive, perhaps highly so, but not offensive. You want to take one incident from Mr Zukerman's life and label him a bigot? With this logic, we are all bigots. Bigotry loses its potency with this constant dilution of its true import. My comment was from a different situation, and I stand by it. Maybe watching that particular post again might help. Hopefully you do not take comfort in revelling in the discovered faults of others.

He comes over as really nice. This was fascinating to watch. So many good tips too (as a violinist). I think it is shockingly bad that the other woman didn't know her pupil's name and had to be corrected though. The student's bowing improved so much in just 10 minutes of doing the basic bow movements as did the tone when she was playing. Watching this encourages me to do more of the boring stuff when it comes to practice, because it is essential to good playing. It's really easy to get lazy and just play the fun stuff. But then I get cross with myself that I cannot play the fun stuff as well as I would like, and it's because I'm not being mindful of my technique. Thanks SO much for the video!

Interesting - the better the player, the more they seem to focus on the basics. I heard a story from my cello teacher that he got up early one morning at a workshop and found Cassals, in his 80s, practising open string long-bows with great intensity... But what's with his idea we don't know about colle in England???

im not a violin person, but it seems to me they're talking about shifting around where on each string to bow in order to get the best tone color for each note, which i guess also involves how hard and fast and where on the bow,long with fingerings and shifts so theres lot of things to worry about yeah......this instrument is way too hard

@tullochgorum6323
@tullochgorum6323 9 лет назад
Helena, you're a wonderful musician but as a yoga teacher I can see that your chest is badly collapsed as you play, throwing your neck forwards in an unnatural position. The viola is an injury-prone instrument, and if you play like this throughout your career you will be at significant risk of neck or shoulder injury. I would strongly encourage you to consult an experienced yoga, Alexander or Feldenkrais teacher so you can correct this.
@jmc10strings
@jmc10strings 7 лет назад
Unfortunately this often happens with the viola which is an instrument larger and heavier than the violin. One must be attentive to his position while playing. Tips from PZ very interesting on the basic technique, a little different than that used in europe (especially in france). I have already seen this taught by a Canadian. (sorry for my english...) ;-)

Zuckerman made his recent symposium at Juilliard extremely awkward by making culturally insensitive, stereotypical and ignorant comments about young musicians who are Asian or Asian descendants, which wasn't the first time. As a result, Juilliard decided to withhold posting the video for public with apologies. I found older videos of his master classes where he mocked and stereotyped a specific ethical group of young musicians at Juilliard. I have zero tolerance for racist and ignorant people even if they are world's greatest artists and masters.
@nickyork8901
@nickyork8901 2 года назад
Good point, and racism should be challenged. He made a mistake. Have you also ever made a mistake? Have you also contributed anything to music and culture across the world on the level of Mr Zukerman?
@RK-do8ug
@RK-do8ug 2 года назад
@@nickyork8901 Mistake? 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣You don't make mistakes when giving speeches and final remarks at a symposium with 100 global audience members watching. When you say Asian people have no DNA to sing or they should use more soy sauce in their performances or fixing a student's posture by mocking Asian string players, you don't mistakenly say that. That is completely intentional, which reflects your deeply rooted view on certain group of people according to psychology. Have I contributed to the world of music? Of course, I have although I didn't know my contribution to the world of music gives me rights to mock musicians who are not from my ethnical background and be forgiven because it was just a mistake. According to your theory, I have all my rights to mock you and your people because I have won international and national music competitions, have performed in 11 different countries, have taught music to orphans in Kenya and Cambodia with a donation of recorders from Carnegie Hall, and have volunteered to teach music to children who are mentally challenged. Where are you from so I can make fun of you and your people? I will be forgiven and understood anyway because ignorant people like you will tell me it was a mistake. Does this sound morally alright to you? Please, please tell me where you are from. I can't wait to make fun of you and your people and I am really good at that 😂😂😂

Don't take his lesson unless it's free of charge lol his bowing is worse than the average players out there he's just overrated by support from his country. Research he barely became a joint award winner by a Jewish judge claimed to compete again to make him a winner. Meet ask him if that has traumatized him for his career to play the viola not violin.
