I can't believe how you took this block from complicated and a pill to make to easy and enjoyable. And the bright fabric with the black background is gorgeous.
Everyone kept telling me how diffuse this block was. I was a bit nervous when I started and I did get a bit confused a couple times in the earlier part of the block. But It was fun to sew and I wouldn’t mind making a quilts worth of pineapple blocks. I made a rainbow version on the livestream. I swapped the fabric placement so the rainbow colors were dominant. I’ll show It on my WiP It Wednesday this week.
The black one reminds me of “lite bright” from my childhood. I love johna gold apples. They are so are to find though. They are a cross between a golden delicious and Johnathan .
This has been so helpful. I have always wanted to make a pineapple quilt but don’t have a speciality ruler. Thanks to this video I don’t have to get one. Thank you so much for showing us this technique.
Thank You so much for Your video!!🙏 After some research I couldn't find another video which clearly shows that You don't need a special pineapple ruler to sew the pineapple block. I really enjoy working with creative grids rulers but I don't want to spend my money on rulers for every new block design I'm interested in 🙂
Glad it helped! I totally agree. Other than the pineapple block I haven’t found another use for my pineapple ruler. I also love creative grids rulers but for this block It was just easier to see without the ruler. Have fun sewing pineapple blocks!
I think this may be the first time I saw a pine APPLE block done without a special ruler... The process looked pretty easy too. Thanks Robin... I hope you have a happy Mother's Day.
It was much easier than I expected Laura. It does remind me of the hexagon log cabins we did. Same basic principle. I think that’s why It felt so easy to me.
I did print a free FPP a couple weeks ago. It just took me so much longer than just sewing It this way. I know foundation paper piecing is an excellent tool that many love it’s just not for me. I do enjoy seeing what other talented quilters make using FPP.
Really interesting and lots of your ideas on the way- which i appreciate because i am a new quilter.Watching do your progress made how you create of the pineapple- I’m gonna start and discover in the beginning how it works and ill watch your making the pineapple again and picks up your important tips to make a quilt. Thank you, Robin! You are more time every time i watch your videos- Great!
I never would have figured this out! I have never seen one Ike this! Can’t wait to try this after I make your bag with the vinyl! So happy I found you!
TAKE ONE OF YOUR FINISHED BLOCKS AN CUT IT IN 4s THEN SPIN EACH QUARTER PIECE A QUARTER TURN.... YOU WILL BE AMAZED AT WHAT IT TURNS OUT TO BE.... I DID THIS IN PAINT SHOP PRO AN IT WAS A FANTASTIC WILD LOOK.... LOVE YOUR WORK BTW YER FANTASTIC ❣❣❣
Thank you so much for showing how this can be done without buying special stuff and loved that you told us the light one was all 1.5" strips and the dark one 2" strips; great to have a comparison of how much impact a simple half inch in strip width makes! Can't wait to try this to use up my scraps! #StashBuster
You’re very welcome. I was curious to see how each would look and I knew there’s be others out there wondering too. Your time is precious so I thought I’d I made each version It might save you time. This way you can see which you might prefer.
Robin, I am so happy that You showed this method-Some of the other techniques seem to waste so much fabric that it turns me off from even trying it, but I really love 💕 the look of the pineapple block! Have a great day and I am hoping to make it to the live!
Thank you Marie. I’ve heard others say the same thing about the waste. This is the only version I know considering these are my first two blocks. I couldn’t understand why there’d be so much waste. This is how my brain works so It works for me. I hope It helps others. It is a beautiful and fun block.
Hello, another awesome video with interesting content! I had a busy day in my sewing room but now I get to sit and hand quilt while I watch! I hope you have a lovely week ahead! Thank you or sharing your time, talent and expertise!
Wow these blocks are beautiful!!! I love how they are so versatile with color and strip sizes. My favorite apple is the honey crisp! So delicious and crunchy!
Great demo, Robin. Yes, I made a WH with pineapple blocks but it was in 1991, and I don’t remember the technique I used. Lol. Your method looks great. Thanks. Now I’m hungry for an apple 🍎
It was fun to sew these blocks. I don’t normally try different techniques for the same block etc but this was a great experiment. I’m looking forward to apple season.
I love the pineapple block. They are so fun and relaxing to make. I have made them in the past but I believe I used a ruler from Jodi Borrels, I am not sure if I’m saying her last name right she is known for her square in a square ruler. I do have the creative ruler that has never been opened. I wish I would’ve seen this sooner so I could take out some fabric to sew along with you. Maybe next time have a great time this afternoon.
Thank you. I think you may have missed a couple of my videos recently 😉. I’ve been talking about May being all about the pineapple blocks. That way anyone who is interested could buy a ruler and get their fabrics cut. We’ll be using the creative grids ruler on the 20th if you’d like to join in. It sounds like you have a ruler you like. I know others will be curious when they read your comment. Thanks!
Wow those blocks are gorgeous Robin. I think I like the black one best but love the white too. I have never made this block but it is definitely on my list now. Off to eat an apple!!! 💕
Love the look of these and they seam so easy to make. Not yet but would love to try. My favorite apples used to red delicious but now either honey crisp or jazz. Happy Mothers Day Robin
This is perfect. I saw that Missouri Star video and loved it. Just like Jenny Doan, I always thought the Pineapple Quilt pattern looked way too complicated and difficult and I would never even attempt it. All those little jagged points! But it’s not! I bought the rulers, large and small, and I’ve been looking forward to making a Pineapple quilt. I’m in the process of moving to Maine so I can’t start it but I really wanted to understand the pattern without the MO Star rulers and you’re doing that for me. THANK YOU! Your blocks are beautiful! I love the colorful strips against the more neutral backgrounds. Surprise, I love the white background because you can see the strips better but I like the wider color strips, especially for a full-sized quilt. Maybe I just love your novelty fabrics.
Thanks Susan. Last week I felt and said 100% the ruler will make It so much easier. It does look like a complicated block. After making two I’m not so sure about that 100% ruler thought anymore. I’ll reevaluate after the next live stream. 😉. Either way, it’s a beautiful quilt. Scrappy or planned.
Hi Uta. It does look a bit scary and complicated. My first two starts didn’t quite work out but my next two tries were fun. Sometimes you have to be hands on and actually make the block as you’re watching the tutorial. Then It seems to make more sense. At least that’s how It works for me. I hope you give It a try.
Uta Hill After you watch Robin’s videos which are great because she explains the pattern and the complications, you could find the Missouri Star Pineapple Quilt pattern video and watch it from a different point of view. Missouri Star depends on the rulers because they want you to buy them, but it’s still great to watch. Jenny Doan is so excited and happy about finding the pattern is not as complicated as she thought it was and she wants to share that. I’ve never seen her so excited about a pattern.
Thanks for the fun video. I got behind again due to all the tasks related to selling our house. If all goes well, the sale will be final by the end of May. One of the things I will miss about this place are the two little apple trees that we planted some years ago. The started producing apples (Fugi and Gala) a couple years ago. 🍎🍏
You won’t know what to do with all your extra time once your house sells. Of course now that you’re leaving the apple trees are producing more fruit. Never fails 🤣
@@rsislandcrafts I know what I will do with my time. I will get back to Nebula and Gravity that I put on hold back in August. They will be my first bed-sized quilts. 😀
You’re welcome. I feel the same way. Rulers can be expensive and if they’re only good for one project I tend to hesitate. I found the pineapple block easy to sew without the ruler and fun to sew. Happy sewing!!
Ok, NOw I HAVE to make one )))) Scraps cut off twice can still be in the scrap box. 3/4 inch across makes a tiny 1/4 inch flash of color in a crumb quilt )))) and yes they can have seams in those too. hahahaha. My friends already think I'm insane, but a 1/4 inch patch confirms it. ))))
I had so much fun making those blocks. It would be easy to make enough for a quilt. Yes! I don’t use scraps that small but I know a true crumb quilter loves any little piece of fabric. #createwithscrapitude

I tried making a block today starting with 2 1/2” square and 2” strips. I was trying to trim at 1 3/4” but it seemed to come to short on point area. You were using 1/4” less than your 1 1/2” strips. Does the measurement vary depending on strip and or start square? Thank you. I made it work and completed the block and really like your demonstrating this as I did not want to fool with PP or an expensive ruler.
It’s been awhile since I’ve made a block or watched this video. If I remember correctly I talked through why I did that. I think it’s the seam allowance so It shouldn’t change. I remember struggling with that when I made my first block too. Then I realized I need to take into account the seam allowance. I’m glad the video helped. I’ve been thinking that I need to revisit this block. It’s such a fun block with a great look in a quilt. Please let me know if you have any other issues and I’ll try to help.
You can find out about my mat in this video - m.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vuQuzTkvxRA.html&pp=ygUaUnNpc2xhbmRjcmFmdHMgY3V0dGluZyBtYXQ%3D
love this pattern and gave it a try, I am a little lost on the trimming, could you explain in more detail about leaving a quarter inch and cutting, I am missing something and I am sure it is right there in front of me and I am not seeing it, you do so well at explaining things. Thank You
If you could please tell me where in the video you’re getting a bit lost that would be very helpful. If you pause the video at that section you can give me the time stamp or just give me a very good description. Thanks.
@@ladiehawk Worst case you embrace the wonky 😉. But I understand your frustration and wanting to keep your block square. I actually don’t have any extra tips for you unfortunately. That section has all of the information that you need to trim your square at that point. When I get stuck I watch that section in the video. Pause. “Rewind”. Then as the video is playing I pause It and do exactly what the instructor did. Pause. Rewatch the next section. Pause. Do the same step on my block. If that makes sense. If you pause the video at 9:20 that shows what your first corner should look like. There’s a 1/4” of the white section showing on the corner. That is your seam allowance for the next round. Once you have all of the four corners trimmed you should have a square. You could try going at It a bit differently until It clicks for you. I’ve had to go the long way around many times. I tend to get stuck on the simplest parts. You could try cutting a piece of paper that measures what the center square should be. Move the paper around and see if your mind can see where to trim the corners. Have you tried moving past this section and finish the block? Are you okay trimming any part after this? Or are you lost all the way through? If you’d like you can email me pictures to my gmail account. Sew your block up to the part where you get lost. Lay your ruler where you’ve been trimming the block. Send me a picture with your ruler on your block. Maybe I can see where you’re getting lost. I wish I could do more to help.
@@rsislandcrafts Robin, you have been a great help just being there and listening. Thank you for the suggestions and advise I will following it all, I plan on getting it even if it takes me days. I look at your video and it looks so straight forward I just can't get what I am not getting. Anyway thanks again for the great advise the paper idea is a good one and will surely give it a try. Will keep you posted and will send a picture if I still don't get it. I am sure you hear this all the time, but I really appreciate your site, it has given me inspiration at a time when I really needed it.
@@ladiehawk Thank you. It’s nice to hear that my efforts and work are helping others. I’ve always struggled with following patterns and as I mentioned I tend to get stuck in weird spots. I always hope that my tips and tricks and constant chatter helps others to get unstuck. It’s a great block. I know you’ll get It and when you do you’ll laugh at yourself because It was a simple thing that had you stuck. 🦩
A whole quilt of pineapple blocks would be a commitment. A hotpad would allow you the creativity and fun of sewing the block without the huge commitment.
Thank you! Here is the unboxing video for my cutting mat. There was a discount coupon but I’m not sure if it’s still active. m.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vuQuzTkvxRA.html
I haven’t made a pineapple block in awhile so I went back I rewatched the video. If you rewatch each time I’m trimming a round I mention that I’m lining It up with the previous strip. There’s so much information in this video which makes It easy to miss a tip here and there. Once your block has a few rounds to It then you’ll be going off of the previous rounds. I did not use the 45 degree line as It grew. My strips were 1.5” and each time I trimmed I lined the 1.25” line on my ruler with the previous round. I hope that helps.
I think this is the type of block that we each have to find what works for us. I like to sew my first block with random scraps so I can test It out. Then when I have It down pat I use my “good” fabric.
@@leannemori9688 For me that’s the trick. Knowing what you’ll use and only saving those. Trust me, I look at all of the bright funky colors in my trash can and I feel the urge to rescue every scrap 🤣. When that happens I know it’s time to empty my fabric trash can.
I don’t give a specific fabric amount per block. It depends on the size of your strips. This video shows you how to sew one block. I always recommend seeing a test block first. Then you’ll know how much fabric one block uses.
My husband watched this with me- he loved your explanation - he said HE could do this - thank you- ( he doesn’t follow direction well - little dyslexic among other blessings)! Great job!!
@@homesteaderfiftywmartha603 That’s so sweet. Thank you. I want anyone who watches one of my videos to have success with their project. It’s not fun when It feels like there’s part of the directions missing. Hi Hubby 👋🏻
