Same bro. I saw them live in 2019 without knowing any of their music. Greatest concert Ive ever been too. And Ive been to my fair share of concerts. Billy Joel, ACDC, The Killers, Kendrick Lamar, Harry Styles, Noah Kahan, Counting Crows to name a few. But, Pinegrove were far and above the best for me. I hope they come back!
Whoever ran the sound/mix for this session is a beast. It's pristine. Even if the acoustics of that small area are naturally nice, they are still a hero. The band always sounds good but I've never heard them sound THIS good.
I feel this same way. This was actually my first exposure to them, but everything else I watch can't compare to the sound quality of this. Wish they did Aphasia though, haha!
Three things, The tempo changes are just fantastic and always spot on Backing signing has the best harmonies ever Evan never gets a single note out of tune What a bloody band
I only found Pinegrove recently but they're already my absolute favourite artist at the moment. Been listening to every album on repeat for weeks now. This performance is so gorgeous. Evan's voice is so emotional and powerful. This is the sort of music I'd love to be making.
100% agree. i’m glad i’m not alone. the audio mixing to the instrument tuning and the vocalizing to the perfect rhythm everything is absolutely flawless
This is a beautiful stripped down pinegrove vibe but if you want the full gut punch go to their audiotree live and specifically watched recycling. That is the most synergy a band will ever have. Even the mistakes in that audiotree session feel intentional.
Josh Marre is probably the most underrated slide player in the industry. His stuff is always so perfectly placed. Never flashy, but just adds so much texture and pushes the song in the right ways. Actual slide inspiration for me. If you're reading this, thank you dude. Your slide solo in Need 2 on Audiotree literally made me buy a slide and now it's one of my main tools and I'm getting people hitting me up to play slide on stuff.
So happy Pinegrove did a Tiny Desk concert so that new people can hear about them. They're like a best kept secret and Im so glad they're getting more exposure.
Pinegrove unplugged is just folk music, which is honestly most of the reason I gave the band a chance. This was my first exposure to them. Now, I’m in the middle of a big Pinegrove binge. It’s interesting to see my internalized music biases working in real-time. I’m a big folk music guy, and I probably wouldn’t have given Pinegrove a first chance if they’d been all electrified. But now, I love the fuzz guitars. If I wasn’t so strict about the kind of music I let in, I’d probably like a lot more bands than I do.
They sort of mix midwest emo and folk music together which works surprisingly well and is one of the reasons the songs work so well electric and acoustic
It's been like 5 years since I watched this and I've followed Pinegrove ever since. I think they've developed and Megan has really brought something with her unique bass playing. Amperland NY is fantastic. But i do miss Nandi. Nandi brought more than keyboards and backing vocals, she brought some kind of magic to the band, some kind of chemistry. I will watch this again.
Having never heard this band before this video, there was a gut punch in Old Friends pretty much right at "I should call my parents when I think of them / I should tell my friends when I love them." It felt so heartwrenching and real, like I just walked into a personal moment I wasn't supposed to. That combo of beautiful music and sorrowful lyrics is pretty powerful.
In a perfect world people feel perfectly comfortable drifting from their usual cliques at concerts. The few I bother going out to are the ones I'm real passionate about and just by coming out you're already my friend, Pinegrove is one of those bands.
Seriously. The band, or someone in the band, posted an image of the performance space probably two months before this was released. I was getting impatient, lol.
Pinegrove is one of my favorite bands of all time. I had the opportunity to work and hang out with Evan at a summer camp in Colorado, before he became big with Pinegrove. He's a great guy, and a very talented musician. His personality is contagious and I just remember wanting to be just like him! I'll be going to my first show in San Diego in February, can't wait to hear them play some songs from the new album.
@@erinmerry5305 She had her own project., album, and tour. Like most everyone else she knows the controversy was nonsense, and still sings with the band.
These arrangements just smash. I keep coming back. So much honesty and focus in the performance. Thanks y’all, and thanks to the production team for capturing it so well
This is fantastic. Loved all of Cardinal. Thanks NPR for giving this band a high quality session that will help them reach a bigger audience. You rock!
this band has been recommended to me on Spotify a lot but i never really got into them?? this tiny desk changed everything for me,, i love it so much :-))
I was so lucky to catch these guys live in Chicago opening for Into it. Over It. By their performance that night alone I was a fan. I'm really looking forward to their future efforts and seeing them live again.
I find myself listening to this every week, it’s just amazing. I don’t want to listen to these songs any other way, and everything about their performance is perfect.
You guys are touching my heart and soul, my dad unexpectedly passed at an early age without health problems. You guys are helping me cope by remembering the good times. Much love
Made a comment on here years ago about the band being all individually talented and have been listening to them closely since then. Over the years they have been so consistent and getting better. The individuality in talents compliment each other so well, easily one of the most well rounded bands in recent years.
The feels that you get from any of their songs is amazing. Got the chance to see them when they came over to the UK a few months back and it was the best gig I've been to in years.
@@GreyMatterPlatter I guess only certain people have the patience and, dare I say, taste for nuance? At least he has a career though, because a lot of people haven't missed this!
Pinegrove is my favorite band of the moment, the first time I heard them it broke my preconceived notion that I hated country music. give em a listen and melt into the most comfortable sadness imaginable, deep rich melancholy, sweet yet not cloyingly so.
there is no such thing as a 'bad' tiny desk concert.. Thank you so much for this awesome music every time you upload. your listeners appreciate it greatly
I've been looking for another performance of their's with this arrangement. No luck so far. It's by far my favorite approach to these songs I've heard.
Surprised that this was so good! Why haven't I heard of this band before? They are so precise, the mixing is so good, and I love the tempo changes. It's like when an artist paints out of frame, with a little swoop, except musically. Carson McKee sent me here, when he did "Old Friends".
Carson's cover is great, it actually revived my interest in this band. I never made it past old friends when I originally heard of them a few years ago, and since his cover, been listening almost everyday. Top notch music, hits deep.
