First lesson in how to play Dr John's Pinetop boogie. Anyone who has access to a piano and how knows how to play a major scale can learn this, it's one of the most effective and easiest boogies to start with. Advanced pianists can learn a lot with Pinetop as well, as it lends itself more to improvisation than some other boogie styles. Also check out Dr John's own lessons on Pinetop, where you can learn from the master himself. These lessons provide more a more basic approach to learning the tune.

Dude you rock my technique was off I use mostly white keys with my left hand I mean it sounds alright. But is it better to use mostly black keys with your left hand?

Hey Cody, in Eb blues you'll end up using mostly black notes in the bass, but really we should learn to play in all the keys, or at least a few, so that we get used to technique on both the white and black keys. Blues is often taught in keys like C, F & G with a lot of white notes around, and this is fine, and I don't know if there is anything intrinsically different between playing white or black notes. However, I guess we play differently in Eb, compared to C for example, as the shape of your hand and how your fingers interact with the keys will differ. If you are used to mostly playing on the white keys, Eb is great because it gets over the irrationally worry about black notes somehow being more difficult (I've heard this often... ?) and it forces your fingers to approach the piano in a new way. Chopin realised the magic of playing on black keys, as shown in his 5th piece in his first set of Etudes, a truly wonderful piece of piano music written entirely on the black keys, but it's very hard to play, as are all of Chopin's Etudes! :)

thanks for the tutorial. Do you have easy sheet music for the Pine Top boogie?

Hi - I don't, but if you search around on the internet I'm sure you will find a version. The easiest way to learn though (even if you're used to following sheet music) is to learn the different elements separately (the main riffs, beginning and ending, etc), as it needs to be played as an improvised piece of music, and impro is not really as hard as it's made out to be, you just need to understand what notes work where :)

The original in the key of F, and this is not the riff, Terry Mills Tutorial on intro and riff is excellent and Christian fuchs; link does the full pinetop tutorial ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-UfYNnmACIvc.html Terry Mills link ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-dhozDlZ56aw.html. the great thing how ever with Pinetop Boogie is there lots of room to manouver. you can play it how you want.

Terry Mills' tutorials are fantastic and well worth watching. Personally I prefer Dr John's sort of 'upside down' version of the riff, funkier and more up to date imho. In terms of key, we should (it goes without saying, I hope) be able to play blues in all 12 keys. Dr John's key of Eb works well for beginners, as it gets over a lot of the common, but irrational, fear of the black keys. And I totally agree that Pinetop gives lots of room for playing around - hopefully it will continue to evolve in the hands of masters like Mac.

Well I don’t really agree that this is an easy piece of boogie…I think it’s quite difficult
