You showed me how to do this years ago , but i guess a remedial pinion angle tutorial can't hurt , lol also thanks for all the Ladder bar setup info, it worked ! thanks !

I see quite a few of instructional videos from top notch professionals. There are always more details to go over. It helps a neophyte like myself in these situations.

With newer mustangs with IRS, if Diff is solid in the cradle, what would be a desirable NP pinion. I'm lookin to play with shimming the front or rear cradle mount bolts

You have pinion angle change planned but you never said what is causing the deflection. Is it bushing or bar flex?
@KevinWilsonSBC
@KevinWilsonSBC 8 месяцев назад
Not too sure I am following your question. Sorry. No deflection, but depending on squat or separation on the rear and with the natural rotational forces on the rear end during the launch, the pinion is always trying to rotate up on the housing. Go fast, go straight! Be SAFE!

What about my hotrod truck with a carrier bearing? I have a wild vibration around 45mph with light load.

I don't agree with the middle scenario here. If e/t is pointing down 2 * then pinion should be down 3.5 not up .5. Pinion rotation is up so in your example putting pinion up .5 would result in 2* up pinion and e/t down 2* resulting in 4* working angle. Right? The rest I agree . Thanks
@KevinWilsonSBC
@KevinWilsonSBC 8 месяцев назад
A couple points of clarification. Go watch the full video referenced in this video. When you say the pinion should be down 3.5 degrees, what do you mean by down? The direction of down is critical and if you mean 3.5 degree down to mean the pinion yoke is pointing to the ground, then that is creating severe non-uniform velocity as the pinion centerline and e/t centerline are no where near parallel under load. If by down you mean the yoke is pointing up to the floor board, then on the hit you will be more than 2 degrees different from the e/t angle, which is also not ideal. I said the pinion should be pointing down (yoke to the track) .5 degrees so on the it with 1.5 to 2 degree of rotation up, the e/t centerline and pinion are parallel. Lastly, working angle is not b/w the e/t and pinion, it is more the u-joint angle at the transmission end and the u-joint angle of the pinion end of the driveshaft, hence the driveshaft angle is absolutely important!!! Go fast, go straight! Be SAFE!

Some engines for some reason are offset towards one side...why? Is that wrong?
@KevinWilsonSBC
@KevinWilsonSBC 8 месяцев назад
Not that concerned about offset as much as I am concerned over "crooked"... Go fast, go straight! Be SAFE!

What about a radial car that separates 4 or 5 inches would you set the pinion angle at ride height for the hit or at full extension
@KevinWilsonSBC
@KevinWilsonSBC 8 месяцев назад
That would definitely be confirmed at full extension. I generally start with a full 2 degree static offset with these and then confirm at full extension. Go fast, go straight! Be SAFE!

Kevin, what is your opinion on the "broken back" driveline angle? Kinda like this...\ ___ / Both working angles the same at 1.5 degrees. This is actually quite common in older vehicles including my Chevelle and a few others I know of.
@KevinWilsonSBC
@KevinWilsonSBC 8 месяцев назад
I focus mainly of full out drag racing... I don't have an issue with what you are describing, but for the track, I would eliminate it. Go fast, go straight! Be SAFE!

@@KevinWilsonSBC one thing for me is still unclear . When you talk about static , do you mean car standing on it s wheels or up in the air ? So loadaed or unloaded ? Thanks for all the infos you are giving out to us ? Greets Sam

As always great info Kevin. Off topic, we have a chopped 32 3 widow coupe street rod. That wants to be a small tire street race car. After install of 6/71 on the 4 bolt main 351C., power is WAY up and traction is WAY down! Rear is std. street rod 4 bar with coil overs. After we scale it and come up with instant center. I want to fab new rear bar mount to angle the rear upper bars.to meet and form new instant center. Kind of a 4 bar ladder bar.. will it work? Dont want to totally replace rear susp.Its has to work better than currant set up. Any advice would be great..

I don't know why some nake this so hard. Under load the pinions should be perfectly parallel. The driveshaft has nothing to do with it.
@KevinWilsonSBC
@KevinWilsonSBC 9 месяцев назад
In dragracing, the driveshaft is absolutely important to understand to keep the working angles, not so extreme. Absolutely the centerlines should be parallel, but my point is you cannot, and should not ignore the driveshaft working angles to avoid putting the U joints in unsafe angles
@MrAllan5oh
@MrAllan5oh 9 месяцев назад
@KevinWilsonSBC yes I was speaking strictly in setting the rear pinion angle. Large working angles should be corrected before doing the pinion. If they can't be, maybe a CV joint driveshaft should be considered.
