John Waters is my favorite director. "Pink Flamingos" became controversial due to its final scene, which I will not spoil for you. The story is basically a battle of "the filthiest people alive" between Divine's group and the Marbles, a couple who sell babies of girls they have kidnapped to lesbian couples. John Waters' most "commercial" film is "Hairspray" which was Divine's last movie before his death. There is a later remake with John Travolta playing Divine's character.

Grab some grease-covered popcorn, a bucket of beer and put on any John Waters movie (especially ones from the 70s-90s). He's brilliant. He's drawn to the obscene and gross. If you've ever felt like an outsider, John Waters makes movies for you.

The OG pennywise scared me but I was a wee lad. I am quite familiar with the view askew verse so def. checking that one out! Added to the queue!

Oh gotcha. Well the oldest is special needs (expressive receptive language disorder) so anything besides animation he won't watch. The other just turned 3 so same spiel.

Pink Flamingo is trash, arthouse, exploitation, satire, black comedy and very, very filthy all at once. Nothing I'm re-watching every year but it rightfully earned it's cult status and one should have watched it once (if one is not of the squemish type, I guess). Divine went on to have a career in disco music with a series of Hi-NRG songs, most of them by US producer, singer, songwriter Bobby Orlando aka Bobby O, some by the UK 'Hitfactory' of Stock-Aitken-Waterman (Kylie Minogue, Rick Astley, Bananarama, Dead Or Alive). Those were most successful in the UK and Germany, in the US some titles did enter the Club-/ Dance-charts but not the official single charts. In the US "Native Love" was the biggest hit, "You Think You're A Man" in UK & Australia, "Shoot Your Shot" in Austria & Germany. In 1985, Bobby O released a duet with singer Claudja Barry: Whisper to a Scream, which gets played during the pool party scene in A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge. And now look which t-shirt you've picked for this reaction. 😅
