As far as i know Syd showed up in the Studio when they record a song for the wish you were here Album. There are Photos of this Session... he came in and he looked so different because of the mental desease... the medicals and his shaved head... that they didnt realize first who he is. But then Gilmour identified him... he and Roger Waters bursts into Tears... on the Photos you can see that empty look in the eyes of Syd... it was so sad to seem him that way. He stays for a while and then... he suddenly disappeared again without saying a word. 😒 Syd was a Genius... but as the Song says... he reached for the secret too soon.

Do you know SWANS. They can stay in one chord for 30 minutes...If you want to give them a chance (since they can be a dark and uncomfortable listen but have some beautiful tracks as well) listen to their song "Blind" which is some sort of gothic country with sad lyrics, and "Cloud Of Unknowing" which is 25 minutes long and veeeeery psychedelic.

For all of us older people: Remember in the 70’s when it was safe to hitch hike a ride!!! Most people that picked you up would get you a part of the way towards where you were trying to get to and would play this kind of music. You would end up enjoying Mother Nature and if that person got tired of driving you would start driving, but if you got to his destination and not yours you would stop and say “This is as far as you said you were going I appreciate the ride!” You would get out of the car and put your thumb back in the air. He would give you a little present to enjoy your next ride with and would apologize for not going as far as you needed to go!!! You would say thank you for getting me this far. Whatever happened to that love for a friend or just to help somebody out-it’s sad that it got lost over time isn’t it? I listen to this type of music everyday, it gets me by!!!

When you get to the song Have a Cigar the album art will make more sense. As you can see by the two businessman shaking hands a deal has just been agreed upon. @GremlinHunter
@GremlinHunter 3 года назад
I'm pretty sure they were going for a (more modern reference here) Billy Squires "Stroke" with the album cover. The record company stealing the soul of the band by corporatizing and streamlining their unique music or "personality" thus "burning them". Getting "burned" in the industry was taken in a literal stance on the cover. It could also meld into what someone else said and be that extra step of removing Syds legacy from the band considering this would be the final nail in the bands evolution before The Wall would break the band apart. Dark Side was the beginning of the end but the beginning of mainstream success. So in a way, they got burned the moment Syd was locked away. It's really sad to think about, if Syd was still around how Floyd would had turned out. Would they had been a triple threat still? Would the band still be together after all this time? Would Rogers not have went the route he did? Lots of questions we'll never have answers too.
@iambecomepaul
@iambecomepaul 3 года назад
Roger’s SECOND attempt at a “concept album” (and he’s starting to get his sea legs with Dave’s help). But for Roger, it all starts to get “muddied up” because of Syd. I think they all wanted to highlight the cynicism of being rock stars but alas, it comes back to Syd. They hadn’t “put that to bed yet” and the memory/guilt/regret of his missing-ness is riddled throughout all these compositions. Probably not their intent, per se... but there it is... in all those notes and riffs. Syd.

Yes! You're continuing your PF journey! You mention that the music was making you sad...that is exactly the emotion they were trying to convey...a feeling of sadness, loss, loneliness...the entire album is a sort of tribute to original founding member Syd Barrett...a gifted young man that destroyed his mind with too many drugs. David Gilmour replaced him in the band, and began the 2nd era of Pink Floyd. This album looks back at Barrett with sympathy and sadness for their lost friend.

JoJo, the first cut on the album is "Shine on you crazy diamond". It represents Sid Barret's slow slide into mental illness. The whole song is almost an intro to the balance of the album, which is, in it's entirety, a tribute to the late, great Mr Barret, who was one of the original founders of the band. My personal favorite cut on the album is "Have a Cigar" which gives a glimpse of their R and B influenced roots, while satirizing the band's commercialization with their first major contract.

15:36 Yes it is technically saxophone but it a baritone saxophone. The saxophone most people are used to hearing is a tenor saxophone (higher pitched). Played by Dick Parry who also played on Money and Us and Them. He would also play on later albums, A momentary lapse of reason and The Division Bell.

This album was their dedication to their founding member Syd Barrett. He was only on their first album with them. They let him go because he had a breakdown from doing too much LSD. But he is the crazy diamond!

Pink Floyd is in no hurry to get through a song. They are done when they're done.

Most Pink Floyd albums need to be experienced! Shine on You Crazy Diamond has a luxuriously long intro, and this is one of the songs that typically turns people off Pink Floyd if they don't have the patience for it. Think of it as the car ride getting to your destination... then the lyrics hit and the album picks up. If you're looking for something similar, ANIMALS is the closest to WISH YOU WERE HERE. A concept album based on a theme. THE WALL is different. It's a concept album based on a story. And it requires a deep dive and you need the lyrics. Do the album first, then treat yourself to the movie! You've been caught in their musical trap now. Throughout your life you'll find yourself always coming back to Pink Floyd.

There is a song on their album Meddle, called "Echos" that I used to fall asleep to all the time. I used to be a hopeless night owl, and that was the only thing that could calm my mind and send me to sleep.

This album is a commentary on the music industry with tribute to their former bandmate Syd Barrett. Syd was the initial creative genius of the band but he soon went mad due to his drug use. He would often play shows completely out of tune, facing the wrong way, or not playing at all. His mind was simply destroyed. It was later determined that he suffered from Schizophrenia, meaning he likely saw and heard things that weren't there. He was ultimately fired from the band and that proved to be one of the most impactful firings in music. Not only did it allow legendary guitarist David Gilmour to take over and give bassist Roger Waters the green light to take over songwriting, but just the nature of Syd's dissolving state of mind and the difficult choice they made in firing him played a big part in their lyrical concepts regarding mental illness. Shine On You Crazy Diamond is their biggest tribute to Syd, notably having his name in the title: Shine on You crazy Diamond The rest of the album targets the music industry turning young inspired musicians into mindless robots as a part of the "machine", becoming part of the system that they may have once rebelled against.
