Pink Floyd's album ANIMALS is a critique of capitalism. It's their reaction to George Orwell's book "Animal Farm", that is a critique of communism. The 3 main songs of the album are in order: "Dogs" that represent corporations and business people, described as backstabbing sociopathic egoists. "Pigs" who represent politicians and politics, described as complete fakes. "Sheep" -> us, the common people, described as docile, compliant fools, meek and obedient. Though in the end the sheep rebel against their overlords and kill them. (Happens in the song "Sheep".) Those three songs are bookended by the two parts of the short ballad "Pigs on a Wing (Part 1 & 2)", which is about people should actually look out and care for each other, and thus works as the positive, optimistic counterpoint to the other 3 angry songs on the album.

Animal Farm isn't a critique of Communism, its a critique/allegory for Stalin's regime specifically. Orwell himself was a socialist who fought with Marxist rebels in Spain in the 1930's and saw firsthand how Stalin betrayed them.
@mori1bund

@@ThisOldHat Yes, you are right! Calling it just a critique of communism is rather superficial. However I just wanted to keep it short and not write an essay about the themes and motifs in Animal Farm under a reaction video to a PF song on youtube. :) But I appreciate your comment!

it makes me feel miserable and angry as fuck, but I can't stop listening to it LOL it mostly pisses me off that NOTHING has ever changed since this was released in 1977... and not only that, instead of taking this song for a deep reflection on life, most fans take it simply as something to listen to in the background while smoking a joint...

Pink, this was a great reaction! Thank you. I'd like to address something you said. You stated that this wouldn't be a go to song for you. You're right on the mark, but you've got to understand something. Back in the day, it was albums, not singles. Except for the radio pop, and especially with prog rock bands, you listened to complete albums. Dogs is not a single to go on your mix playlist. It's only part of a 40 minute piece of work. 70s Floyd, Yes, Genesis, and the likes are albums meant to be enjoyed as a whole. Good exploration!

It's great to see you younger generation appreciate the great music that came out in the 60's,70's, the music I grew up on. It's probably the 2 best decades ever that rock songs were composed. Roger Waters was typically known for writing songs on the darker side and Geezer Butler of Black Sabbath. Somebody has to. Can't have all love songs.

The crazy thing is that Corporate greed and corrupt business people seemed to only get worse after the time that this album came out. Society should have been listening to Floyd. Instead we went down the "Wolf of Wall Street" path. Reagan deregulated everything and let corporations rule our lives with an iron fist. OK, I'm off of my soapbox now. Let's just appreciate Pink Floyd.. *Genius*

That's the thing: the critique about the view of "success" in capitalism, and what it takes to succeed, and what it looks like is even MORE needed today than it was even back then. Roger wrote this pre-Reagan, pre-Thatcher (you want to know what he thought about Thatcher, listen to his albums in the 80's and the Final Cut), and he knew what it was about. He knew what that kind of selfish greed, that fetishization of success no matter the cost, would lead to.

This tune is the essence of Pink Floyd. Taking the listener on a journey, or telling a story about the realities of life. And all the while as the listener is completely absorbed into trying grasp the meaning of what is being conveyed. One can almost lose track of the masterful music that helps paint the picture of what the listener is offered. Coupling the captivating material with the tremendous musical artistry is what puts Pink Floyd in their own class. Pigs, and Sheep should follow this number.

This is the best song they ever wrote IMO. I recommend Sheep from the same album, it's also classic. Floyd were great commentators on the 'human condition' and able to make such uplifting music out of dark ideas and themes.

Great GREAT critique of this song. Now, you should really do Pigs (Three different ones) and then Sheep.

This album seems like it was written for exactly what is going on in this country today. Especially "Pigs". Another good one, Pink!

YESSSSSSSSSS finally! - Now that you've done dogs, you HAVE to do the rest of the album. Dark Side of the Moon is one of the greatest albums ever written, however, Animals is Pink Floyds greatest album. Always so overlooked due to the long songs. Pigs, Dogs and Sheep are 3 categories of people in the world based on the novel Animal Farm. In each one, they take you through what it feels like to be one of those people, and how the others see you. In short, Pigs are the politicians, CEOs etc. Dogs are the salesmen who are trying to climb the endless ladder, and sheep are the people who are trodden upon.

I’m old enough to have been at the beginning of when Pink Floyd hit the music scene. For me the only way to listen to PF is alone with head phones on. That way you can concentrate on the lyrics and overall concept of the message PF is telling the listener. Example: The album, “Dark Side of the Moon” is the story of former PF founder, Sid Barrett who went insane. Knowing that allows the listener to appreciate the whole album as it is one continuous story about Sid’s decent into madness. The song writing is phenomenal and deep.

love the reaction to this one in particular The barking dog from the late great Richard Wright synthesizer David's killer guitar the great lyrics.. that interlude for about six minutes of just awesome synthesizer space out.. _you've got to be trusted by the people that you lied to so that when they turn their backs on you you get the chance to put the knife in_ 1978 now today it sounds like a certain group of folks lol

My own interpretation would be that of a man who wastes his life chasing a false idea of success. The idea that climbing a corporate ladder, and all that is involved, will bring satisfaction turns out to be a sham. No longer useful to them, his corporate masters discard him and he is left with the bitter realisation that it was all worthless. Cheerful stuff, eh?

It was a take on the book animal farm, the whole album. I first heard this some 45 years ago and for me it is a go to song, it's brings me down to earth. It's the greatest song ever written, maybe not the best, prettiest, or hyped song, just the greatest, because it is life, and it is the world, and it is reality. Also it's a pretty damn good song as far as musically

I've been listening to this album, This Song in particular since the mid 80s. It is a deep song and it just seems to get deeper the older I get. It never gets old; I never get tired of it. There is great music, but this is something else completely.

Probably my favorite Pink Floyd album.....or the one I find myself returning to most often. For the sound alone. First heard it in 1977, and never even paid attention to the lyrics. I don't think I ever even saw the lyrics until sometime in the early 2000s. Sadly....they only did Dogs, Pigs & Sheep. If only they would have thrown in some Horses, Chickens & Cows.....we COULD have had a DOUBLE-album.

Boba Fett not a song to put on at a party, it’s an album to be listened to in one sitting. Just like the rest of Floyd in the Waters era. Meddle through the Wall are my favorites, but Animals is the absolute rawest Pink Floyd you can get
