"Grantchester Meadows" to "Astronomy Domine" is one of the coolest segues I've ever heard. Everyone in the audience was probably higher than a U-2 over Beijing, so they must have been blown away.

@daveproffitt1591
@daveproffitt1591 2 года назад
Yes, this is a good version. Embryo is always my "go to" track on these recordings. It was starved of exposure back in the day when it was only available on that Harvest sampler!
@dragmio
@dragmio Год назад
There is literally a mistake in this version of Embryo, and it sounds BETTER with the mistake! Unbelievable. And the "seagulls" part is by far the best ever! Edit: I just heard the concert from the day after and they played Embryo the same way. Obviously they liked the "mistake", too. :)

This is the best example I've discovered of why the Post-Syd, Pre-DSOTM era of Pink Floyd is my favorite. I love Syd and constantly wonder what music he would've produced had he stayed in the band, but a lot of the pop singles he wrote sound fairly dated today and he just didn't have Gilmour's guitar chops. And I love Waters but subtlety isn't exactly his strong suit and that makes a lot of the sociopolitical thematic lyrics of his later albums overshadow his songwriting ability which I think is best highlighted in this era. Songwriting and musicianship are Pink Floyd's strong suits and both are strongly evident here. As a deadhead, the Grateful Dead played the Filmore West on 4/12/70 but by the time this show was performed they were on the east coast. Shame it never logistically worked out because having the Dead on the same bill as this show could've been the greatest thing in the history of music.

Well said! This was one of their most artistic periods. Pity that Water's sociopolitical views got in the way later on...then again I love what PF and Gilmour himself did later.

When I delve into Floyd's past it's around this period that I cherish, with all the bitterness and derision of the Roger VS David camp- one only has to listen to Grantchester Meadows ..one only has to listen. Peace

Amazing recording of when these guys were at their prime, when their music still had an intimate quality and they had not yet become an arena rock band. That Echoplex is almost like a fifth member of the band.

that, my friend, is the binson echorec unit echo/delay machine. Hank Marvin from the Shadows used it as well as Syd Barrett. The binson echorec was a major part of the early Pink Floyd sound, until they started to use the VCS3 synthesizer in 1972.

Parts three and four of Saucerful of Secrets has been my favorite song(piece of music?) for decades, and the level of improvisation with the live versions is more noted compared to most Pink Floyd songs. Many years ago when I first found RU-vid, I found that someone had posted Celestial Voices from the May 1st, 1970 performance in Santa Monica, a day after this performance. Being familiar with the May 1st show, it's incredible having a performance recorded just a bit before, it shows a little clumsiness on guitar that doesn't show later, a real evolutionary step. Thanks for posting!

@neilgoldring4832
@neilgoldring4832 4 года назад
Richard Lennon do you have ears? Listen carefully! It's so effective it dosen't even need the opening verse. The Floyd while carefully structured, it also has zero melody at times & can go in & out of their songs on a stage like its telepathy.
@richerlennon9429
@richerlennon9429 4 года назад
Neil Goldring all aside i dont know why youd question if i have ears. I have pretty great hearing and im not tone deaf. Im a musician actually but i digress. I was just saying that it was cut off. Would like to hear the whole thing but it was grate from what was on the tape. You have a good point theres definitely telepathy involved among other things for sure

I’m just discovering just how much of a genius that Syd really was; but it’s kinda funny when all the people who’ve never heard him say that he’s a nobody, nothing and they think 🤔 it was all Waters or Gilmour. Brilliant recording, super high quality thanks!! However, of the concert itself a lot of it is just ambient stuff I don't much favour from the Sid Barrett era - is it possible to drop some tags on the timeline to identify the individual tracks? I have seen it done elsewhere in RU-vid.
