Probably the only live version of this classic that exists with Syd Barrett ! Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun from Pink Floyd A Saucerful Of Secrets nice and spacy live in Sweden back in 1967 !
The Floyd were playing this as early as August 1967 and it didn't end up on an album until summer of '68. This is the best version of it in my opinion. Syd's killing it!
Raunaq Bedi, This track was officially released on "Pink Floyd The Early Years - 1965-1972 compilation box set without the audience noise. Syd weaves some beautiful patterns on his cherished 1962 FENDER ESQUIRE! David Gilmour once said that Syd Barrett was a very inventive Guitarist. I wholeheartedly agree! Rick Wright plays spacey FARFISA Organ. Rick Wright is my all-time favorite Pop/Rock Organist! This was recorded at "GYLLENE CIRKEIN" STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN - SEPTEMBER 10,1967. Raul.🙂
I never understood why The Pink Floyd didn't record a version like this, featuring Syd Barrett, in the studio! Syd"s approach to the riff is so Psychedelic and hypnotic!
Noble Blossom Of Darkness David Gilmour stated in an interview that he's on the studio version of Set The Controls ... "A smidgen". Gilmour comes in at 5:00 just before the song fades away! Gilmour has a smoother sounding Fender Stratocaster while Barrett had a trebly sounding Fender Esquire. I only hear one Guitar! Roger, for some reason, decided to include seagulls instead of Barrett! I mean no respect, but have you had your hearing checked? Since you are so sure Barrett is on the studio version, tell me exactly when Barrett appears using the song's time point like I did to illustrate when Gilmour comes in.
@@raulmacias1311 I believe Is the only song the five are credited. Edit You made me do your homework here Lyrics and musicEdit According to an interview with Gilmour in the 2006 documentary Which One's Pink?, the studio version of the song contained minor guitar work both from Gilmour and Barrett, making "Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun" the only Pink Floyd song that features all five band members, though some listeners may not fully discern the guitar tracks as they largely blend in with Richard Wright's keyboards and organs
Nick's drums really shine here - as they do in many other live Floyd songs, I've noticed! The pulsating rhythm laid down by him is absolutely hypnotic.
I had no idea until here and now that Syd ever performed Set the Controls on any live shows! Wow! Thanks for putting this up here on RU-vid, Syd's one of my heroes.
@@sarahb4745 good to know im not the only one who thinks this, loved post meddle pink floyd but when i did research onto syd and their earlier years i cant listen to the newer stuff..
There's another live version featuring Syd Barrett. It was recorded for the BBC in September, 1967 and it's on RU-vid. I like the way Barrett plays the riff on his Fender Telecaster!!! Very cool! It has that treble sound. David Gilmour would play the riff slightly different. The "A Saucerful Of Secrets" version features Rick Wright's Farfisa Organ and Vibraphone. David Gilmour comes in towards the end of the song with a few notes. I much prefer the versions with Syd Barrett. That's the true Pink Floyd sound!!!
It was nice to see this concert surface a few years ago. I was lucky enough to find it on CD from Australia. We can only hope that with the copyright limit on their music that more studio recordings will show up in the years to come.
Flipper Barrett, It is really a shame The Pink Floyd didn't record my all-time favorite George Roger Waters composition with Syd Barrett on Guitar! The version on A Saucerful Of Secrets features Rick Wright's Farfisa Organ and Vibraphone. Syd is not on that track. David Gilmour appears briefly towards the end of the song. This, and the BBC Live Version, is the way it's supposed to sound with Syd Barrett's hypnotic and trebly Fender Esquire! Psychedelic Bliss! Raul.🙂
Syd and Gilmour are both on the studio version of "Set the Controls", according to Gilmour. It's the only Pink Floyd recording confirmed to feature both Barrett and Gilmour.
According to David Gilmour: "Syd Barrett is on a little section of set the controls..." I believe that Syd is playing the little guitar section in the end of the track
@@bobsmith6543 I read somehwere that the pink floyd's manager at the time (Andrew king) Said that Syd Barrett played the guitar solo at "let there be more light" but every other places i've seen people saying that this is the First guitar solo by David Gilmour
Gianlucca Montechiari All I have ever read David say about "Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun", is that he is on the track "a smidgeon'. Gilmour comes in at about 5::00 and plays a little of the melody and then improvises while those darn seagulls come in. Set The Controls... was recorded over a 6 month period. Gilmour added his Guitar in January,1968. Who knows why this track wasn't recorded in a couple of sessions with Syd Barrettt in August,1967 when the initial session took place.
Little by little the night turns around Counting the leaves which tremble at dawn Lotuses lean on each other in yearning Under the eaves the swallow is resting Set the controls for the heart of the sun Over the mountain watching the watcher Breaking the darkness waking the grapevine One inch of love is one inch of shadow Love is the shadow that ripens the wine Set the controls for the heart of the sun The heart of the sun The heart of the sun The heart of the sun The heart of the sun The heart of the sun The heart of the sun The heart of the sun The heart of the sun The heart of the sun The heart of the sun The heart of the sun The heart of the sun The heart of the sun Witness the man who raves at the wall Making the shape of his question to heaven Whether the sun will fall in the evening Will he remember the lesson of giving? Set the controls for the heart of the sun The heart of the sun The heart of the sun The heart of the sun The heart of the sun The heart of the sun The heart of the sun The heart of the sun The heart of the sun The heart of the sun The heart of the sun The heart of the sun The heart of the sun The heart of the sun The heart of the sun
Jeff Stewart I love the way Barrett plays the riff on his trebly sounding favorite Guitar ~ mirrored 1962 Fender Esquire! Syd's Guitar work is mesmerizing! Although not a virtuoso ala Clapton, Beck and Psge, Barrett was very inventive playing beautiful improvisational patterns, like a painter, on Guitar during this "Live" performance! Barrett's innovative use of the "Binson Echorec" Echo Unit and the "Glissando' technique he dramatically ushered in on "See Emily Play" secures Syd Barrett's inclusion in the pantheon of greatest British Guitarists in Pop/Rock history! GUITARIST OF THE MONTH ~ '"BEAT INSTRUMENTAL" ~ #57 OCTOBER,1967 ~ Quote by ROGER KEITH "SYD" BARRETT ~ "A couple of months ago I spashed out a couple of hundred on a new Guitar, ( my note: possibly a white Fender Stratocaster Syd was filmed with on Dick Clark's American Bandstand vin November 6,1967), but I still seem to use that first one (Julien's note: The Guitar was Syd's famed Fender Esquire) It's been painted several times, and once I even covered it in plastic sheeting and silver discs. Those discs are still on the Guitar but they tend to look a bit worn. I haven't changed anything on it, except that I occasionally adjust the pick ups when I need a different sound." This "Live)track was recorded at GYLLENE CIRKEIN STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN SEPTEMBER 10,1967 Why Roger Waters decided to record his song, without Barrett, instead with David Gilmour's very brief Guitar passage and with seagulls! on "A Saucerful Of A Secrets", is truly mystifying! The Floyd could have recorded a version like this "Live" version in a few hours but Waters decided to record the track over three sessions ~ August,1967, October,1967 and January,1968! Can you imagine how cool the band must have appeared like on stage, with Syd Barrett, with the Psychedelic light show behind the band whilst preforming this truly hypnotic version of "Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun"?
yeah syd i knew he did this but they redone it without him on the lp ive got four syd bootlegs with quality sound recordings some great stuff still remains out of reach.but recently a lot more was released for the first time officially.hopefully they release it all sooner rather than later great post i heard the bbc version some nice organ on this version...
