I remember a friend playing this version on his 8-track and confusing the heII out of me. I never knew this 8-track solo existed, and he never knew the song was split up on the album version. I thought surely that it would end up on the CD version, but that didn't happen. ... I also thought it was Gilmour until much later,
*Looks at sweet old 8 track player & single tear runs down cheek* My father gave me an 8 track like that for my very first real stereo along with the 13 8 tracks for a penny from Columbia house. Such an awesome memory. Oh ya, and Floyd rules! :~)
When I was 14, I found an old 8 track car system in a box and mounted it to the wall of my bedroom with a DC converter to power it. I used two old car speakers mounted on both sides of the bedroom. 45 years later, I still imagine some of the track changes in the middle of some songs.
I’m not sure why this made me tear up a little. Man do I miss the 70s. Those were some of the best days of my life. I was only a young kid, but I remember my old 8-track player and all the great music that went along with it. I guess sentimentality never gets you anywhere.
Sentimentality is the thing that will get you back to those days, even if its just a moment. And as far as the tearing up goes, I figure it will happen to anyone whos an avid fan of theirs. Hearing this secret solo is kind of like coming across a memory that you never knew you experienced. Beautiful pieces like this will do that to you ♥ I'm glad their music is still hitting us in the emotions the way they did 50 years ago!
I completely agree. I had my daughter (who’s more into the music of today) to this track and she really liked it. That’s the beauty of this band, it’s universally liked.
@@davidgilmore559 Not quite. What happened was, David Gilmour called up Snowy and offered him the gig as onstage ancillary guitarist/bassist. So Snowy goes down to Britannia Row studio, where the band was working. And Snowy just happened to walk in, when they had somehow accidentally erased one of Gilmour's guitar solos. So there was this really tense vibe going on, and Snowy walked into that. So Dave and Snowy talked about what Snowy was going to have to do, etc. And then Roger says, "Since you're here, why don't we record something?" and that's when they recorded this version of Pigs On The Wing.
Animals is my favorite Floyd album, and I've never heard the 8 track version before, so thank you! I prefer it the way I've been listening to it, but it's pretty cool to know this exists and to have the opportunity to hear it in 2021!
I had a good friend of mine back in the 70s who was a huge fan of Pink Floyd, and I use to hang out over his house and listen to Pink Floyd for hours, he knew everything about Pink Floyd, well I remember listening to this on 8 track and then hearing it without this solo on the radio one day, and as I'm listening, I started noticing something seemed different but I couldn't put my finger on it, well I ended up getting that album and finally realized what was different, so I showed it to my friend who was the huge Pink Floyd fan and when he found out it was someone else doing the solo he took that 8 track and put it in the street and ran over it, he couldn't except someone else playing the solo that wasn't in Pink Floyed
Back in the early to mid 70s, there were innumerable homegrown labels bootlegging 8-tracks, selling like hotcakes at flea markets in every small town to anyone with an 8-track player. Sometimes you might be lucky enough to spot "Not by original artists" in small print on the outer packaging. Incorrectly, some of us, at the time, may have heard this as a fake session guitarist. Fantastic to hear this now!
KaptSonic22 I remember those! There was a truck stop in eastern Pennsylvania my parents & I always stopped at that had a spinning rack with those 8-tracks. Nowadays, the equivalent would have CDs like Greatest Trucking Songs or CW McCall’s Greatest Hits, lol.
wow what a beautiful hidden gem and glad it finally came back into the light again never knew it existed and glad i got to hear it thank you Snowy White for your awesome contribution
Wow! I never knew this existed! Thank you for sharing! Snowy did a great job keeping the vibe David Gilmour put into his work on the album. Blends quite nicely. Very happy to have finally heard this. Thanks again!
Thanks for posting this video. Always wanted to hear what this eight track version of the song sounded like. BTW- hang on to that Panasonic, it's one of the best made. I myself have one that sat in my Dad's garage for 30-ish years though extreme temperatures. After he gave it to me I took it home, put in a tape and it played great. Some of that old stuff was made to last.
@@lucalone Seems like a new guitar tone on the remix vs. the original. If not re-done, re-worked with a ton of new effects, making it bombastic and ruining the flavour of it. Also, the 1st half on Snowy's copy is only 1 of the 2 acoustic guitars, losing Gilmour's part completely. Nope. This one is much better...
@@lucalone there are two different versions of Pigs on the Wing. The 8-track version is mixed differently, with double track acoustic guitars. It was made specifically for the 8-track tape. The Gold Top Sessions version didn't have a second acoustic guitar track, and the mixing is different. www.reddit.com/r/pinkfloyd/comments/2r5808/pigs_on_the_wing_pts_12_full_version_8_track_from/
I had 8-track in my Opel GT and marveled at this version over the vinyl version. Always thought it was Gilmour but later learned it was Snowy White. Gilmour would have played less notes haha! Love this, thanks!
I can see how in making two parts that the short solo might have interfered with the buildup to the first solo in 'Dogs' but as one long track it not only worked, but was necessary for a longer and closer to full length song. As for having it in a 'part II' if it wasn't written later after the release of the record with 'Sheep' which sort of concludes the electric part of the album. If it was in existence before mastering it could have possibly have fit if it was made an acoustic solo. Still my favorite album which is normally a hard decision when there are at least 3 LP's tied for my second favorite.
Very cool. As I was listening to the solo it struck me that it had a bit of a Peter Green vibe, so it’s cool to learn that Snowy White is doing the playing. Around this time it was Snowy doing a lot of the lead work on Peter’s solo albums after he left Fleetwood Mac. He was busy!
LOL - I own a Home 8 Track Player that plays QUAD Tapes - 4 channel stereo and it has a joy stick for balance and 4 separate speakers as well ! -- (~);}
There is a long version of "Pigs on the Wing". This one appeared in the 8-track version of "Animals" and has a guitar solo that unites both parts of the song. Snowy White, who turns 71 today, recorded that solo when he went to visit the band during the recording of the album.
I was a huge Floyd fan when I was a teenager in the 80s and I bought a used car that happened to have this 8 track in it. I got to hear this solo like twice, and then the player ate the tape.. It took decades for me to hear this version again, but I always remembered it.
Cool. I've never heard that solo before, and I bought the album when it came out. Still have it. Gotta love tape hiss! I was waiting for the click, bang, rattle, bleeps and bloops, then the next track to start! We've come along way in audio reproduction since then! There's a lot of romanticism in those old 8-tracks.
That's a nice Panasonic deck man! I'm assuming u do, but what year was that made? I had a Technics with reverse and fast forward but then cassettes came out. But like an idiot back then, I kept the tapes but got rid of the deck. Stupid!!
+Tim Arrigo Thanks man. Best I've been able to find it's an RS-808US, so probably built between 1978-82. I bought the deck on eBay myself, in case you're looking for a replacement -- shipping can be kinda pricey but they've got some nice deals
Cool..it is sweet! And thanks for the info, i will have to check eBay..i don't know why but i liked my 8 tracks..lol..must be that age between the 2 i guess because i still like my vinyl too, and that turntable isn't going anywhere..rock on brother!
I have no expertise but I was told by an recording engineer that 8-track was superior to cassette because the tape was wider and held more information - of course I am ignoring other limitations, but for fidelity, they were awesome.
Do all 8-tracks of this album have this version on it? I just got a copy today, and it does have the guitar solo on it, but that blog post made it sound like not all copies of the 8-Track had this version on it.
Cartoonyworld109 I can verify that not ALL versions do, since I bought a red tape produced by Columbia in Canada without it before purchasing the British release that included it. I'd guess (not sure) that a telling factor would be whether any given release has "Pigs on the Wing" listed as a single track or in two parts. The Canadian version that I bought, for instance, has Pts. 1 and 2 of "Pigs on the Wing" listed separately; so do the Spanish and Italian 8-tracks made by Harvest and the Australian tape made by CBS. The British cart (Harvest 8X-SHVL 815) has "Pigs on a Wing" listed as one track, and as heard above, includes the solo. Though I don't have the American cart (Columbia JCA 34474), it looks like it has "Pigs on the Wing" listed as a single track, so I suspect it includes the solo as well. Maybe that's the one you bought?
Cartoonyworld109 Cool! Haha I did some research back when I was first trying to track the tape down. After one tape failed to turn the solo up I figured I'd do my best to make sure it didn't happen again
I'm sorry. The fidelity is way to good to be from an 8 track. They lack the high end and are full of tape hiss. Plus the meters are not moving in the right way. What is the real source here? It is not an 8 track.
It's from the 8 track! This is an old video by now, but my memory is that this was converted to mp3 directly though line out and that I then replaced the room audio in my cell phone recorded video with the directly recorded audio. I'm genuinely surprised to hear someone say it sounds good -- the high end is fair but I think the hiss is present for sure 🤷♂️ So far as I know it's been released on the Snowy White greatest hits CD, but that's OOP and I'm sure you'll agree this is well below CD sound quality. Neither the meters nor the track changing mechanism on my player work properly but I think it sounds pretty good in person for what it is
Well they say you learn something new every day, and so I have. I had no idea this existed. We had an 8-track player in the car when I was growing up, and I know my mom had "Wish You Were Here" on 8-track, but I don't remember if we had "Animals" or not. I can't remember having ever heard this. What an unusual pleasure. I wish my mom was here to ask here if she'd heard it, she would've loved it. Thanks for posting.
I think what actually happens here is the two parts joined together are presented at the front of the album rather than part two finishing it. Sometimes the 8-track format required screwing around with song order.
Tears in my eyes! Still a very original love song. Maybe one needs to be in love to fully understand what Rogers was feeling when he wrote this masterpiece.
There are 2 versions. The first appeared on 8-track. Second version is released on "Goldtop" compilation - the solo is different and the song is complete remixed, with an reverb on the vocals.

Mother, do you think they'll drop the bomb? lmao. But seriously that song should not have been split up for Animals, bad call by the band or whoever decided. Lost a dynamite lead, Snowy White was made for them, somehow.
is it true that you cannot rewind or fast forward an 8TRACK to desired locations until the whole album ends and only then you can rewind that damn hing but only to the absolute beginning?
Aidan The Lover Boy O'Dwyer My deck has a fast forward function, though it's pretty imprecise. No way to rewind. Of course, you can jump from track to track anytime, but that similarly leaves you pretty minimal control over where you land
The full story is: Snowy White has heard that the band was searching for a live guitarist, so he came to the studio. They were just recording that song and had accidently deleted Gilmours solo. So they told Snowy “Hey, if you want the job, show that you can play. Here's a song, listen to it and play a solo over it“. And that solo actually made it on the UK and US Versions of the 8-Track Album.
