Comedian & Roaster Tony Hinchcliffe's passion for Pink Floyd is undeniable. He discusses the highlights and lowlights of the 1975 album Wish You Were Here.
Long description
This show is brought to you by DistroKid. Go to distrokid.com/v... for 30% off your first year!
Pink Floyd is one of the heavyweights of the classic rock genre, and that reputation was built through many albums, including 1975's "Wish You Were Here". Fresh off his performance on the Roast of Tom Brady, Comedian Tony Hinchcliffe dives deep into his favorite band, discussing the deep sonic landscapes created by David Gilmour, Roger Waters, and how they affected his life. The discussion ranges across all five tracks from Pink Floyd's ninth studio album and beyond, including "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" and "Wish You Were Here". There's one iconic track that Tony could live without.

Live in Pompeii is simply one of the greatest marriages of live music and film we have. I love Darkside …the Wall and Animals but WYWH is my favorite Floyd album and it’s between the latter and Aenima by Tool as my favorite album ever. Listening to WYWH as a college freshman 20 years ago with my headphones on head full of too much lsd in the dark by myself changed the way I heard music forever and still to this day Welcome to the Machine gives me goosebumps and I can go right back to that moment never has there been such a beautiful blending of droning wild synths and acoustic chord progressions. Waters and Gilmore get the much deserved credit for most Floyd accomplishments but Floyd wouldn’t be nearly as transcendent without Richard Wright his work on the keys and synths is simply awesome. Good on Tony for shouting out Final Cut there are some beautiful songs and emotions and so many people shit on it. Don’t know where I’d be without Pink Floyd it never gets old. Jugband Blues is a brilliant Syd song and Interstellar Overdrive is unreal instrumental. Agreed on the Wembly performance it is mind blowing have it on vinyl any color you like is insane on it.

I must have felt this in the ether because about a couple days ago I randomly had Shine on You Crazy Diamond start playing in my head. I had to hear it at that moment and immediately pulled up RU-vid. That recent search in my algo could be what prompted this amazing video to pop up in my feed. Fearless on Meddle is high up there in my book and the message is like the prequel to Wish You Were Hear. Tony in my eyes is a living legend. If you know and love Pink Floyd then you are a legend too my friend. We all come from carbon and we face these pressures of life to become the crazy diamonds we are.

The Beatles and Pink Floyd are the two best bands of all time, it could be argued either way honestly. Pink Floyd is a bit more introspective while the Beatles are a bit more mainstream and poppy which can be better either way depending on your taste, mood, life experiences. At the end of the day it doesn’t matter though 🤷🏻‍♂️ me personally, my favorite band is always going to be Pink Floyd even if the Beatles are just as talented, I just enjoy Pink Floyd’s music and style just a bit more

You just made a shitload more diehard fans, Tony. I also didn't know you were a Floyd fan. Pink Floyd is not light music. It's human experience music! The Songbook, as you guys said. Yes, impact like Tolkien! Agreed on sid Era, cute and eccentric, but Roger Waters is in the John Lennon mold - telling universal heavy truths. And rocking fuckin hard one moment, and bringing you to tears the next. All with that mystery of a weird rainbow prism, a white brick fuckin wall, or two dudes skaking hands, one on fire. Sorry, and the floating pig over a Grey cityscape. Good to hear that you are not just about ballbusting jokes, but can deal in the dark, murky, and emotional. Kudos to the Tarantino stuff too. Pulp fiction best movie in last 30-40 years. So for me, it's Animals and Final Cut. I'll say it, if you like Final Cut, you may be a real pink Floyd fan. Or a Roger Waters fan. Now gonna check out that live 71 show!!!!!

At the end of this pod, Tony talks about the 50th anniversary of Dark Side live at Wembley album that came out last year. He said 1971 but it was 1974. They were touring Dark Side which obviously came out in 73. But I wonder if he knows that that show was 2 and a half hours long and they opened with Shine On You Crazy Diamond, BEFORE WISH YOU WERE HERE WAS EVEN RELEASED!!! Proceeded by early versions of Animals , and THEN, Dark Side in its entirety! But just imagine hearing those unreleased songs for the first time ever…. LIVE!

Not trying to be a nay sayer, but I will say these things - Pink Floyd is my all time favorite band. A lot of what Tony is talking about is Pink Floyd's content when Roger was still in the band. He gives The Beatles flack for trying to write popular music (around 11:56). Without Roger, Pink Floyd had their own new wave era and wrote sappy content. See Momentary Lapse of Reason - and my opinion, Division Bell also falls flat.
