In this video I show viewers how to identify Pink Lady Slipper, introduce different common names and break down its scientific name. Cyprypedium acaule. I show how to accurately ID it and explain how it make take almost 12 years before it can flower and show the smaller paired leaves that will come up annually until it reaches flowering maturity. I explain the mutualistic symbiotic relationships between the plant and bees and the plant and miccorhizal fungi. I explain why only 5% of flowers are pollinated. I explain how the fungi are required for seed germination and the relationship between the plant and fungi later in the life history. I tell the Ojibwe legend of how the plant came about. I discuss risks to the plant and why it may be decreasing in number.
