Sydney Bolden if you look at through their first comment’s replies (at the time of me writing this it’s the first in the comments section) then they make it clear that they don’t mean harsh criticism, arguments, etc, they mean repeated targeted attacks from an entire opposing fan base, and doxxing. Hope that clears that up for you!
To be fair, every content creator, even small ones should expect a couple of hate comments and flamers every now and then, but targeted harassment campaigns, cyber stalking, and doxxing are completely different. It’s disappointing, but not surprising that twitter and RU-vid are indifferent to the issue.
@@chickensox6083 Exactly. It's impossible to be immune from criticism, but terrorism (and I do consider cyber stalking and ESPECIALLY doxxing to be a form of terrorism) is not the same thing as an especially harsh criticism. Thick skin isn't the same as IMPENETRABLE skin. Like I said, abusers always expect their victims to be the bigger person, that's why they get defensive when the victim reacts accordingly. It's like when your older sibling holds their finger right next to you and says "I'm not touching you. I'm not touching you." just so they can claim innocence when you react. They WANT a reaction. And social media is all ABOUT getting reactions.
Oh, definitely. If RU-vid or twitter ever do take action against persistent harassment it’s always because a popular or famous user happened to be a victim of it. Smaller creators often don’t have a chance to defend themselves or even ask their platform for help. Crowder and people like him always hide behind plausible deniability. They always say things like “I never asked my fans to dox or harass this person, so I have nothing to do with it”, all the while doing nothing to discourage their viewers from victimizing whoever they don’t like. I’m glad that Carlos Maza spoke out. Hopefully, there will be a push for better harassment policies within social media.
I think its sheer laziness and trying to be as cheap as possible. Also a problem of social equality in capitalism. Money over persons, i think both the customers and money should count.
This is an excellent video. I agree with every word of it. Banning hate speech is NOT censorship or a question of free speech, it is about STOPPING hate, and we need to keep shouting this.
I think it’s also useful to point out the absurd mental gymnastics required to defend Crowder. On the one hand, Crowder and his base try to absolve themselves of guilt and social responsibility by claiming that the word “queer” has been reclaimed by LGBTQIA+ people and is therefore inoffensive. “His @ is ‘gaywonk’! It’s only fair...” so on and so forth. On the other, Crowder and his base hide behind the “it’s comedy” defense as a method of trivializing Crowder’s obvious antagonizing annunciations of the words queer, gay, and Mexican. The first defense doesn’t make sense because Maza has also identified as CUBAN. If Crowder gave any semblance of a shit about accuracy- something a climate change denier doesn’t do- then he wouldn’t derogatorily refer to Maza as a Mexican just because he looks Latin American. That’s just a classic racist oversimplification of several distinct Latin American cultures that I and many other Latinx folk have seen time and time again. I’m not even gonna argue the philosophical purposes of comedy, so I’m just gonna say that if the second defense can be reduced to “it’s just shitposting,” then why make the first claim in the first place? Why try to absolve yourself of something the comedy defense doesn’t claim to care about? Why try to exonerate yourself using unrelated arguments? It’s because they have no real defense for their obvious, grotesque homophobia. This “difference of opinions” bullshit is really just a proxy for “lemme hate the idea of two men kissing and express that in the most roundabout way possible.” I am *tired. Of. It!*
Out of curiosity, I played dumb with a bunch of fanboys on twitter re:the shirt and every single one that engaged me willingly admitted after barely any prodding that the shirt was supposed to read as a slur. Why even have a canned defense then if they're just going to admit it? What the hell is the point?
@@MyNontraditionalLife Theres also the acronym GRSM which is shorter yet more inclusive. :) (Gender Romantic Sexual Minorities) It will take a while to catch on, but I like to think it will eventually.
Honestly, at this point, I don't think I can agree that RU-vid is "afraid" to do anything about the monster they've created.I think they actively support it.
Super JLK if this involves the tweet that Carlos made about throwing milkshakes at people then I absolutely understand. Carlos, you should know better than to advocate harassment and violence yourself.
Kat Welham LMAO I’m fucking not! He legit advocates for harassment and violence against people *IN A TWEET, THAT IS REAL, THAT HE MADE* who have different viewpoints even if those viewpoints are extreme. Violence is never the answer. By his logic one should get hit with a milkshake if that person is perceived to be a Communist or a Socialist or an Antifa member and to hit someone with a milkshake for having different political views makes you look like an asshole and makes the guy who got hit make him more like the victim in this situation. It would be better if Carlos had said “We should de-platform those with extremist views like white supremacists, nazis, etc”. I would have been okay with that. I’m just saying he should’ve known better. I’m in no way victim blaming here at all nor do I support victim blaming.
Nazis: drive a car into protestors with the aim of causing harm Normal people: throw milkshakes at reactionaries to humiliate them I don't know man, these seem different to me.
Trisha Schuman Different scenarios but both involve the use of violence to silence the other. You can’t use violence in order to succeed. Civil discourse ends when someone gets hurt. Deplatforming is a better option than throwing milkshakes. I’m mad as much as you are when those protesters got hit too.
Social Media. You join to connect with people, and walk away a misanthrope. (On edit: Damn good to see you again btw, even if the subject is rage inducing)
"Don't go online if you don't want to be harassed" = "Don't drive a car if you don't want to be involved in a car accident." You don't need the Internet or a car to survive but you usually need one in America, and you can still be harassed without a computer and you can still be involved in a car accident without owning a car.
I spend too much time on youtube but no time on Twitter. Despite watching Strikethrough I had no idea about this situation and likely wouldn't have without this video. So as dirty as I know it feels sometimes, I hope you keep making and hosting them here.
Welcome back! I've loved your show for years, and as shitty as it is that RU-vid creates these problems, I'm happy you post here. You make the world, and by extension, RU-vid, a better place, and we need as many voices combatting the hate as we can get nowadays.
Hell yes, Rantasmo. You're absolutely right about what RU-vid has done, showing hate to be profitable, and where their priorities lay. It will get worse. Fantastic vid as always.
"Daddy has things to do": the kind of sentence you want to hear coming from a guy with a gorgeous beard like that. The rest of the video was also very good
thank god. honestly, i was so disgusted by the ppl in the comments of other videos talking about carlos being a "professional victim" and how if youtube tries anything, it is "censorship!!" it is upsetting and outright sickening to see the conversation on twitter while youtube is over here flying the rainbow flag.
At first I wanted to write "I love how angry you are in this", but like, I mean that in a good way. As in, what I've been feeling for a long time was put into words and I saw myself reflected in your frustration. Also, no matter how long it takes between videos, I always love a new one from you. Your perspective is so important
I was just thinking about your channel 2 days ago when I used your Persona 4 video as a refence (btw, it's one of my favorite pieces on the game.) Glad to see you back doing more content! Even if it is a video on how youtube doesn't deserve your content!
Was really excited to see you post again! This video made me think about engagement and how it's the only thing RU-vid cares about. So maybe I should add to the engagement of videos that bring up the themes that are important to me. Starting right now, leaving this comment and sharing the video!
You've got an excellent perspective! Stand where you want on this RU-vid thing and I'll be right there with ya! The more people like you on this website the better.
It’s disheartening that RU-vid has become a double edged sword. On the one hand the platform allows for creators like ContraPoints, Lindsay Ellis, and Philosophy Tube to thrive. On the other, the company has clearly become complacent when it comes to the negligence of radicalism.
1) I am very glad to see you back. 2) I hear you loud and clear, is see it as it happens, we live it and you are right, we need to help make the changes necessary for the betterment of those who desperately need it. 3) Sharing with all my friends is the best way I know (short of giving money to a cause, I'm broke) to promote this video and what it means. 4) DADDY'S HOME~
Check out Dreamsounds. Genderqueer creator that somehow the algorithm favored and covers tons of interesting topics through a music lens but with historical backstory ect. (Kind of how rantasmo primarily talked about movies)
I wonder if one day the wrong buttons will be pushed and those creators, or possibly RU-vid itself, will end up going to court. Possibly for promoting libel at that. In a weird way I hope so. It would show there are real, permanent repercussions for their actions. Glad to see you're back Rantasmo. I was beginning to get worried, and ended up seeking your Twitter to see if you were okay.
Funfact: I accidently clicked on a Steven Crowder video because the thumbnail was designed to look like a leftist debunking Crowder video (I of course didn't look who uploaded it cuz I am a dumbass) Now I keep getting videos from 100% full on white supremacists in my recommendation.
This is an excellent video. You did an amazing job summarising the issue and presenting the information in a digestible way. You have all this evidence to back up your claims and you spoke with clarity. Thank you for doing this work. It is very valuable. ♥️♥️♥️🏳️🌈🏳️🌈🏳️🌈
I love your videos! I love the way you state things, the way you clearly outline your points and give supportive examples, the way you cite your statements within the video (and not just in a reference list at the end - or not at all)...it's like reading a well-written academic paper, but the audio-visual version. Thank you for continuing to be credible. Keep up the great work!
I cancelled my RU-vid Premium over this issue. Unfortunately there's nothing in the "why are you leaving" questionnaire that even hints at this being an option for feedback purposes. **shrug**
I was so happy to see the notification for this video!! I’m really glad pointed out RU-vid isn’t even playing by its own rules and why. And the algorithm always tends towards negativity and controversy. I’ve noticed I can’t look up a simple make up tutorial without getting recommended all kinds of beauty guru drama. If I watch any kind of feminist video I’m bound to get recommended anti-feminist hate speech.
I disabled the up next because I would fall asleep watching something. While asleep the constant playing of videos would kill my battery and then I wouldn’t have an alarm to wake up to in the morning. First world problem, holy shit I feel sorta dumb, but I’m happy I’m sticking it to RU-vid in some small way.
Always happy to see a new video from you @rantasmo. If I may make a suggestion. Perhaps if progressive uploaders here were to upload the same videos on competing sites as well. That would give viewers a way of watching better content, while not supporting Y T if they don't want to. It would also help those other sites get to a critical mass of content and viewers to pose a threat.
I really wish there was a way for content creators to form a quasi labor union or a guild that could advocate for content creators & provide a better dialog between RU-vid and the people creating their content.
F-ing hell I'm straight and that was hard to even watch, I can't imagine how much worse it would feel to be the target. Revolting. I'm glad you're around, Rantasmo.
I adore your content, Rantasmo. And it sucks that you have to spend the time working on videos revealing how vile this platform can truly be. But I still respect the hell out of your informed and moderate approach to things. Here’s looking forward to your future stuff. Also collab with Lindsay again sometime, if you two are still in touch. I loved your old work, together
Great video! Please make a Needs More Gay of Arashi no Yoru ni, you are a great youtuber and I believe in you and your excelent content, you have a terrific capacity of objective analysis and I like that, not many youtubers do that anymore. Keep being you and Cheers ✌🏽
Its become impossible for me to watch youtube without having add-ons made just to not allow those type of channels and videos to be in my recommended section and it really, really sucks that I need to download a third party extension just to not see upsetting content.
I mean, you talk about using your platform to apply pressure but... Rantasmo, where are you? I miss your videos. The only video you've made in a full year is this one and it's about how you're going to continue to make videos to spite the bigots. Then nothing. I hope you're alright. Even if you never make a video again, honestly, I hope you're alright. You're a really cool dude and I'd hate to have lost your voice in the community, whether online or off.
Love it! Thanks! I missed you!. This is a really interesting question. As you said, it is not that RU-vid is not aware of what is happening in their own plataform ( I mean, nudity has been persecuted for so many years in this website, that is hilarious people still think that these hateful speeches and harrasment are just "not seen"), but well... money, right? Companies will alwasy try to aim for what gives them money, money, money; It is up to us, the users, to remind them that "Hey, we live in a planet where you have to keep having some moral sense. In case you have forgotten". I can`t see a better way to do that but from the inside. But we need to do it together, RU-vid will not care if it is just a single guy screaming. We all need to scream.
Fabulous explanation of the situation. Certainly part of the problem, imo, is that there really is nowhere else to go. Even if all LGBTQIA+ RU-vidrs upped and left the platform, where would they go? There simply isn't a viable alternative at the moment so people can't vote with their attention/content/etc
How did "queer" become ok to use. I'm a gay man completely against referring to gay or anything else LGBT as "queer". It's hate speech - a slur, in this context. And is clearly still a slur. It makes me sick to hear the term "queer issues". We're normalizing a word and giving hateful people the proverbial inch to use it and other horrible words, stereotypes, and actions. That's my stance, internet.
Hey, Rantasmo, great to see a new video from you. I was getting worried. Point for consideration: you didn't mention the meaning of "pinkwashing" used by the radical queer community, namely, the Israeli government using the LGBTQ community and what little tights we have here to pinkwash the occupation of the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. I know this isn't the point of the video but I would love to hear your take on that.
I'm conflicted about this. On the one hand, I feel the term pinkwashing works really well when it is a corporation because they have a clear bottom line and benefit from selling stuff to queer people and to homophobes. Pinkwashing calls out the hypocrisy and points to the motive. I feel it works less well when it is a government, because *selling a shirt with a flag 🏳️🌈 on it* is much different from *decriminalising homosexuality*. Likewise, *being neutral or contributing to homophobic violence* is much different from *occupying a foreign territory*. On the other hand... I donno, man. I would not want to be queer in Palestine. But just because it is nicer to be queer in Israel does not mean I would justify its military actions. And on the other other hand, just because Palestine is being oppressed does not excuse their treatment of queer people. I donno. Perhaps pinkwashing is a correct term, and language just evolves sometimes. Like I said, I'm conflicted.
It has to become more expensive for RU-vid to not act than it would be for them to intervene. The people who have been targeted have to come together and sue. Plain and simple. Sue for damages. Things won't change until that happens. Can I just say, though, that I enjoyed this video because I enjoy your thoughtfulness and your very cogent arguments. I also commend your tri-tone beard, which I can only assume you arrived at genetically and not through the vain use of drugstore chemicals. Good job, sir.
That may very well be the point for all we know... be so over-the-top with his homophobia that uninformed but well-meaning people will see him and think he's just joking.
This kind off-topic, but I would really like to see you touch on the queerness of the manga/anime, One Piece. There’s many themes that relate to being gay and some interesting elements that you don’t usually see in manga. Of course, not everything it portrays is appropriate, but still an interesting study.
Rantasmo!!! i missed you so much!! i've watched you for years and you make the best gay ass analytical content out there! take breaks but please never stop making this content.
man i missed your content. Thanks for the video! Regarding opposing the current toxic environment, maybe a series of teamups with other activist youtubers? Id love to see you work together with contrapoints and hbomberguy!
