We've been going back through projects that we filmed ages ago, and are actually editing and releasing them! There are plenty more to come from 2015 and 2016!
This video is our timelapse film of Pinnacles National Park that we filmed back in April of 2016! We spent a little over a week in the park. We camped, hiked the trails, climbed through talus caves, and saw some beautiful sights.
Pinnacles National Park is a fascinating place. It looks out of place with the surrounding topography: The rocks jut out from the otherwise rolling green hills of the Salinas Valley area in California. The park is a release site for reintroducing the California Condor out of captivity and back into the wild, and we were able to see the condors several times while there.
One thing that I really tried to push while filming this was to capture the actual on-site natural sound. I had a stereo audio recorder with me, and at each location that I filmed a timelapse I would also record about 30 seconds of audio.
The equipment used for this film was:
Panasonic GH4
Lumix 7-14mm f4.0
Canon 70-200mm f2.8
Metabones adapter (to mount the Canon lens)
Dynamic Perception Stage Zero Timelapse Slider
Zoom H4n audio recorder
Manfrotto tripod
The music is "Bloom" by Analog Heart, and it was licensed through www.musicbed.com. I also used this artist's music for my Death Valley Timelapse film: • Death Valley Time Laps...

Beautiful! Great camera positioning. It must be very relaxing to wait there while the time lapse is taken.

Dylan Drones ironically it wasn't as relaxing as I would have expected. I usually had two cameras going at once -- a wide and a closeup (side note: the closeups generally didn't turn out great, so you don't see many of those shots in this video), so a lot of times I was going back and forth checking settings, adjusting exposure, etc., so it was rare to just sit and wait. That said, it was still great to get out there and see some really pretty locations. Thanks for watching!

I just spent a couple of days in Pinnacles hiking and doing some still photography. Your video beautifully captures the feelings of being there. There was no water flowing and it was nice to experience the Park at a different time of year.

We went in April (or maybe early May) at the end of the first wet winter that California had had after several years of drought, so there was a fair bit of water. I haven't been other than that time, so I imagine it would feel different without much water. I also really loved the hiking while there. I think I was hiking an average of 10 miles each day for a week, while carrying around 50 lbs of timelapse gear (two cameras, two tripods, a bunch of lenses, a timelapse dolly). It was some good exercise! I don't think I could do it again in the shape I'm in now.

Amazing job! Especially with the moving camera, I know that’s not an easy way to take timelapse videos. Great job! ✅👍🏻

Thanks, Ben! This was a fun project to make because it was at a time that I was trying to do "full-time" RU-vid, meaning my focus was on creating beautiful and creative projects. I hope to get back to that some day. In the meantime I try to find a balance between "client work" and creative projects, such as this one. Thanks for watching!

Thank you for watching, and I'm happy you were able to enjoy it. This was the last only-timelapse video from all of the old projects that we're working through now. We've got several more drone videos for our "Blank by Drone" series (our next one coming out in a few weeks is Arizona by Drone) and a bunch of travel films in the works, which will have some timelapse sequences, but won't be only-timelapse projects.

Thank you. I haven't been doing as much of this type of work as I did a couple of years ago, but I certainly enjoyed it. It was fun and challenging to be out in the park for long stretches. Have you been to Pinnacles?

No, unfortunately. I have lived in Hong Kong for the last 14 years and seeing much of the world outside the the US since I retired. Nothing like your work, but you can check out my old website at www.samsays.com or a few RU-vid travel videos under samsays on RU-vid. Just an amateur photographer doing travel photos of my many travels. I really like your work and your photographic eye. You are so special.

I can't believe I just discovered your channel. I love your low light timelapses. Do you de noise them as individual pictures on lightroom or as the whole video clip using a plug in like neat video? Subscribed!
@BlueMantleFilms
@BlueMantleFilms 5 лет назад
Thanks! In this video the only de-noising I did was in Lightroom while processing the images. On some of my more recent hyperlapses I've started using DeFlicker to do a little extra noise reduction, but overall I find using Lightroom gets me most of the way to where I want the images to be.

Great timelapse. Love it especially because there aren't much good content about the Pinnacles National Park on youtube. I live close to this park but I haven't visited this yet. This video makes me wanna go there soon. Question about the night - day and day - night transformations - did you use any external appliction for that(like LRTimelapse)? If not, do you mind sharing how you achieved it?
@BlueMantleFilms
@BlueMantleFilms 5 лет назад
I'm from California originally, but have been living on the East Coast for most of the last 15 years. We filmed this while RVing around the country, and we returned to CA to spend some time with my family who's still there. My mom and sister had visited Pinnacles a few months previously and recommended it, so we decided to check it out. Night-to-day and day-to-night transitions: I did use LRTimelapse for those. First I filmed by adjusting exposure up (or down) to match the scene, then in post I used LRTimelapse to smooth out those jumps in exposure. On our Death Valley video I actually did the same thing that LRTimelapse does, but I did it manually on a few of those timelapses...literally one picture at a time adjusting exposure by a little bit, and slowing smoothing out between the exposure jumps. After doing that (back in early 2016) I thought to myself "there must be a program that automates this", so I researched and found LRTimelapse.

@@BlueMantleFilms thanks for the explanation. I am yet to watch your other videos. I haven't used the LRTimelapse, yet, but i have seen some videos about what it's capabilities are. I think I should buy and start using it soon.

Wirklich kristallklare Aufnahmen.
@BlueMantleFilms
@BlueMantleFilms 5 лет назад
Thank you for the comment! I am not a proponent of "the gear doesn't matter" as some people are. I do think the gear matters. I wouldn't have been able to make this video (Pinnacles National Park) as well with an iPhone, for example. But more so than that, I think that while it's necessary to have at least adequate gear, that that gear also needs to be used well. Because I had a somewhat capable camera and lens, and I knew their strengths, I think that made it possible to get good imagery out of it. The same with the Miami video. I wouldn't have been able to do that video even two years ago (equipment does matter!). And then while making that video I learned and played to the strengths of the drone. Notice how I didn't have any realtime night footage? That's because the M2P doesn't make very good realtime night footage...the only way I knew to get good night footage out of it was to do that with long-exposure photography turned into hyperlapses. Anyway, in answer to your question: these are sort of a combination of personal and business. We film the footage to be used for stock footage (so business) and by doing that, it affords us the opportunity to also travel as a family and enjoy ourselves. So it's both, really.

You seem like a pilot that follows the rules. How did you a waiver to fly in a National Park?
@BlueMantleFilms
@BlueMantleFilms 5 лет назад
I didn't fly there...it was all from-the-ground timelapses. I've inquired with the NPS about getting a permit to fly in some National Parks, and so far no luck. They say they don't want to set a precedent by allowing some flights. I think they really should put a permitting process in place, even if it's a pretty difficult/strict one, so that at least then it becomes possible to fly in some of the most beautiful landscapes the U.S. has to offer.
@JennGrover
@JennGrover 5 лет назад
@@BlueMantleFilms Thanks for responding. I wish they would make a permit system for Part 107 pilots, but they will not unless ordered to do so.
