Sept. 7, 2018. Our Team River Runner kayak group stopped just above Bedrock Rapid in the Grand Canyon at mile 137 when four rafts of a private trip came by. One took a line too far left and was pinned against the namesake rock in the middle of the river. A passenger was injured when he cut his leg on the rock. After several minutes, the raft was freed and recovered in an eddy downriver.

Deserves to be one of the most feared and respected rapids in the canyon for a fully loaded raft, for sure!

I agree, I have run it 8x, with no probs, but now I never want to go near it.

The most violent raft flip I've ever witnessed happened on the left side in April 2022...no injuries but I was shook standing there on shore above while scouting. That's when I decided extreme right-side was going to be my line. I was on a SUP so I had that option.

We did the same thing in May 2021 - I never jumped so quickly on the high side! Somehow we didn't get pinned or flip (big heavy boat), but got flushed to the left, through a scary hole along the rock. We then spent 20 min trying to get out of the keeper before almost flipping hitting the lower wall as well (went hard, straight into it). I think a bit less water than here (not brown anyways). Bedrock remains etched in my memory 😮😂

My second ran a 35 motor rig left at 10,000. That was interesting, dinged her prop above the rapid. We saw it coming. Watching 16 people high side was a unique experience. They flushed out OK. Back in '97 I went left in an oar boat as the 'Safety Guy' I was not rowing. Piled my own bag boat on the point as a WYW but was lucky enough to hike the rock and get my boat at the bottom. Only dinged 2 props after that. Not bad for 104 trips.

104 trips wow. When my friends ask why I go the the same place, its hard to explain how great it is to be in the canyon. It is an amazing place.

"Safety Guy" - you mean "Hood Ornament" (was my title as well) 🤣

Our most experienced boatman headed left a few weeks back...it was pure ugly but after 4 high sides they made it through with no swimmers and one broken oar. Freaked me the shit out.

Yep, that was me! Scary, but a successful run, no swimmers, upright!

There is stories of multiple broken bones from that chute..

Bedrock is my "favorite" ;-), I've never flipped, but I had to go left twice.

I've gone left twice and made it. The most recent time I was swept left and recirculated in the eddy several times before punching through the outlet chute.

Its the rock after the outlet chute that gets boat flipped. I've gone left twice too and made it, but it was tight.

@@johndemeen5575 I have been hanging off of rocks and floating rivers for 45 years, The road trip "to and from" poses greater hazards than the sports do.. Don't let the fear of death dictate your life as no one gets out alive anyway. Your cold temps could be considered deadly to some folks as well.

@@SegoMan cold? Use to race dirt bikes. Came close once to hitting a tree, at about 60 mph. So I have rode the feathered edge. Just don’t like water. Vaya con Dios to you. Thanks from St. Paul Minnesota.

My first trip down the ditch I was totally clueless and ran left, made it easy peasy. Everyone in the trip looked at me, mouth a gape. I was like "what?". Then they told me what was up. The move didn't seem that hard. Looked like a lot more work to go right, but the consequences...

Same with my dad, 8k-12k flows. He thankfully knew he was not going to make the right cut and quickly pivoted his attention to going left. It was very safe and easy at those flows.

Gotta get down the next hundred miles or so of river and out of the canyon somehow. Not to mention it has all their food, water, clothing etc. on it.

Hahaha yes! That’s what really makes great stories. I have been on the oars for 18 years and have seen some nasty wraps but luckily bead rock has that little “domer” just in front of it at that level. #lovethegrand
