John Mayer Trio's "Who Did You Think I Was" is punctuated by the crisp and soulful bass fills of Pino Palladino. Based on the success of our last Palladino lesson (goo.gl/Q81S3p), and your requests that Jake dive deeper into Pino's work with Mayer, we're coming at you with this series of intriguing work, all played in the course of a single tune. Have a great time learning the fills, and an even better time finding nooks for them in your own playing.

Until now, all these bass walk of the week were from really good bass players, but you are completely ignoring the tone of these basslines, which are a great part of the basslines themselves

Great lesson and breakdown, although at 1:22, the tab and notation are incorrect, or at least they don't agree with what's being played. From the "And" of beat three in the first measure, should be A to C to A (Or 12 on the A string to 10 on the D string) instead of the G to A to G as shown. If you're on a Trio kick, you guys should absolutely break down the first few of bars of Good Love Is On The Way. Super interesting bassline that outlines some more complex harmonic tensions, and very much in Pinos style.

I see you kept the funk inhibitors on your bass.

Best writing of Pino's, imho. Why you playin a jazz bass though?

jared matthews if he had played a p bass would that change the lick? I play it on a Stingray but the notes are the same.

@@joelee1894 It doesn't change the lick at all but he works at Reverb so we know he has a P bass (or 10) sitting around there somewhere haha

Sorry, but that second riff is all wrong. It slides up to and starts on the 3rd of the A (11th fret on the D string), ends on the same note before Pino hits the low A again, and is basically a little run in A mixolydian.

Tune is major. Centered around A7

Whole song is in A major, should be 11th fret on D string in riff 2 to get that major feel or it will break towards John's sliding up on 6th fret on G on the guitar...

If I gloss over the terrible sound and poor execution in general, I thought I'd point out that the first riff isn't even evident in the most famous version of this song. Of all the amazing Pino fills to choose from this guy... made one up?

Wrong Bass bro. Pino plays a P Bass, not a Jazz Bass
