TRIGGER WARNING - We touch on the leader in this video. Fish is landed just under 6 minutes, not bad for an 8-10lbs fish.
July 17, 2018. Great shot of a classic take on the hitch. Because the Pinware is so deep right off the banks it can make for a bit of finagling when releasing larger fish.

You tackled those rocks well! And looks like a difficult spot to tail a fish. Well done!

Awesome battle! Strangely, surface flies don't get used for salmon much in UK, maybe we're a little reluctant to break from tradition! I suspect a net would be useful, however, I was terrified the rod was going to get broken as the fish went ballistic as your assistant tried to grab the line and fish way before it was played out 😮😮😮 alls well in the end 👍

Caught a lot of flack from commenters on this lol. Nets arent commonly used in Newfoundland and Labrador, but youre right that they come in handy. Bringing the fish in before played out ensures a healthy realease. Thanks for watching!

watching videos like this is why it should be law for every angler to have a knotless dipping net in their possession, that fish could have been landed in the first 2-3 mns at max.
@AngryGaper
@AngryGaper 3 года назад
2 minutes at max is a bit short for an 8-10lbs fish but thanks for your opinion. Dip nets are very rare in NL, we are just products of the fishing culture we have been brought up in.

I do it all my self. My first seatrout, I needed help, because they would should have had the net, didn't bring it, because "You never catch anything anyway". Ever since I've decided, that I'll rather loose the fish than recieve help. And I design and tie my own flies too - full circle.

There is no way I could have done what that guy did after hooking into the fish. I would have fallen, cracked my head, and drown. Scary just watching him.

Lol you are too kind! To catch salmon on the Pinware you don't have to be a good fishermen, you have to be a billygoat ;)

Careful, He is going to scuff up his simms jacket running along the rocks like that! That would be tragic. Nice job filming your recording of it all.

@@danmac5510 Call me Kermit buddy he was always my fav.This is how I was shown how to do it by a very experienced angler on this river. The pinware is very deep to the bank and falling in would pose a significant risk. End of the day, not that big a deal but it definitly rustles a few jimmies.
@CONEHEADDK

@@AngryGaper If you get "enough" fish, I can understand the whateverness. Where I'm from, some people don't get a sea trout or a salmon a year, and then you don't fuck up while "helping them", without the mood changing a lot very fast..
@AngryGaper
@AngryGaper 3 года назад
@@CONEHEADDK On this river, its common to release your C&R limit of 3. I fish many rivers in other parts of Canada where hatching one or two salmon a season is a "good year". At the end of the day, we are out fishing for the enjoyment of the outdoors, and nothing is overly serious or consequential.

Good stuff. But you should not touch the line to land a salmon... a shake of the head and it's gone...

lol Im guessing you've never caught and serious salt water fish ? Its called ''leadering'' its done by top guides everyday in the salt for pelagic fish ,,ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9FOUkR0Uoeg.html just google it to see a million examples on fish that swim faster, weigh more and have insane agility , On top of that some of the best steelhead guides ( steelhead fly fishing is done mostly single barbless, barbs, doubles, etc are illegal in b.c) do it,, ed ward the literal creator of the skagit head does it....Dec hogan (its on the cover of his book) and so on. People who live off catching and landing similar salmonids..... Personal i dont do it often, but im not afriad to do it. In most fly fishing contests for makos tarpon etc its the way to score a land.. Mako sharks can jump 20 feet and swim 40 mph. see for yourself ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-EVo3QwkIFTE.html

@CONEHEADDK 3 года назад
@@MichaelPhillips-jw4bj lol your self. No matter how many guides or "gods" that do something, doesn't make it right to do, and especially not under other circumstances. I've seen many fish lost by people, who were doing "as we always do", where there had been better ways to do it. That something works out some times, doesn't prove the quality of it at all.
@AngryGaper
@AngryGaper 3 года назад
@@CONEHEADDK Man oh man, do people ever get excited about this. I could understand if it was poor fish handling, but all we are risking is loosing a fish. here will be another salmon in the pool to hook. You are going to remove the hook and release the fishanyway. Often times we dont even tail the fish just bring it in close and pluck the barbless hook out and the fish is on its way.
