Was trying to fix one of those, it's in my family since before I was born. My dad is always telling me that he used to throw big parties with this thing and that he imported it back when when he was sailing. So I googled the model and ended up here... Was actually helpful. Thanks for doing these videos
Thanks for this valuable post. I was wondering why there are no fuses on that board at 32:24. In fact I'm trying to get a 2A one to test this same stereo here. All the best!
Even as early as the 1970's these all-in-one component systems popularity were in decline and considered "junk". Well, yes and no. For a bedroom, den, kitchen or garage this would be an acceptable system. Will it fill a large room with loud music? No way. It's nice to see this stuff still exists. The forerunner of our separate component society. My kitchen has a Pioneer SX-434 receiver that powers a Nakamichi BX-1 cassette deck and Boston Acoustics A-40 speakers. Nice video.
Those holes on either side of the turntable were for the shipping screws which kept the turntable stable during shipping. They would have been removed by the first owner of the unit.
I currently have KH5522 which is made in japan (the back panel have 2 voltage options) which i think it shares the same body and other function as 5522A in this video. I want to ask you something. The cartridge is broken when my dad was trying to fix it and he broke the whole cartridge the needle and the body is separated. Do you have any recommended cartridge to replace this model? i see so many choices but i have mo idea which one suits it. My dad just passed away last February. This is item reminds me of him. I hope you reply me. Thank you
Hey Jim, Chances are if you pick up an 8 track tape you'll need to do a bit of restoration to it to get it to play. I believe they sell kits to fix them with. The old foam that sits behind the tape degrades over the years and can either just crumble or turn into a gooey mess. I think Joernone has a video showing him repairing a couple of them, but I'm sure there are videos all over YT of that as well. Take care, Gary
nice machine I have a YORX that's in very good condition it just needs a belt for the cassette and the record player works just fine but it's dose need some lubrication so it will be quite and I did get the original speakers for it and the manual.
My parents got a KH-5511 in 1977 or 1978. That cassette deck was very unusual. Fewer moving parts than the tape decks that held the cassette in a hinged door. I got my own better system about two years later, and once I had a high-end turntable I realized how mediocre the sound from that pioneer was.
The amp section on the Pioneer units are excellent, even the low power ones, the cassette decks aint too bad, but the turntables in most of the integrated systems like this are made by BSR, and yes, they leave much to be desired.
8 track players don't have rewind button because the tape would bind up in the 8 track cartridge and aslo doesn't have a channel select button or display. 8 tracks don't have play bottoms too. You might be able to find a 8 track to (so if ever get one needs work this will make it easier to do) cassette adopter which will let you test without the headaches of 8 track tapes because you will have to open an 8 track and slice the tape to replace the foil end which tells the machine to swap tracks or it could be eaten by the player and to replace the pressure pads or it will not make good contact with the head and 8 tracks can get tension poblems which can make the player eat the tape or play slow and is not fun to fix.
Is the wattage output of that unit 5 watts or what if so then it is just a three transistor class A amp with two NPN transistors I.E. BD131 and a BC212L PNP.
About a year late but just in case... "FF10XE" is the original needle. I read somewhere that "FF15XE II" will fit as well, I'm buying that as it's much easier to find and hope it's ok. My father actually got one of these from abroad decades ago and I'm working on it since this morning, love working on random stuff like that. Make sure to check the belt as mine was in the same condition as the one in the video. Edit: Keep in mind that mine doesn't say Centrex in the front, just Pioneer.
That is a cassette tape deck not a 8 track. I think tapes go in long ways like a car player. open tape side would face tuning knob I seen rewind so that is how I know it is not 8 track at all.
LOL. Three 'DUHs' to me. I just peeked inside now and there are two tape drive wheels. I popped a cassette in no problem. I'll give it a test next time it's on my bench.
