Go back to the 1800's with a couple determined to live in solitude without any modern technology. Dick and Bonnie Cain don't have electricity, running water, or any other conveniences on their West Texas ranch home. (#1076, 4/12/08)
This is a great episode. We could all learn a valuable lesson in enjoying the simpler things in life. Bob Phillips you done it again, another gratifying episode, you are the best.
Bob, I guess over the years I have watched hundreds of your episodes and enjoyed everyone of them. But this one was extra special and touched me like no other. This is my all time favorite. This couple is precious and they are handsome and beautiful. Thanks for everything that you and your wife does. You are truly a Texas treasure. Paul
I've only envied one man and his wife. They had a small piece of property in Arizona and lived in a teepee without any power at all. The lived there for 10 years, until he built them an adobe cabin. He resented having to own a pickup truck, but needed that to haul water for his two horses. No bills other than for the truck. Worked as a cowboy on local ranches for income. Two wonderful people. Now I envy two other people who's video I just watched. Such a simple lifestyle, but difficult to get.
I an 83, when I was about 6 and then a few years later, I spent a week with my Mother's Mother. She lived the simple life on a farm like Dick and Bonnie. No electricity, made her own lye soap and done everything by hand. The first time that I was there, she made me some home made cereal. Well it was pretty bland for a 6 year old and there was a small dish on the table with sugar and a small spoon in it, so I got some, but to my surprise it was not sugar at all, bu salt! She was a grand lady and I will always remember and love her and her life. Just a wonderful video and look back to the simple things!
I was on a farm of 50 acres as a child and miss it still today... I wish we were out from under these planes in Cowtown and on a little piece of property that we could breathe, and live as we want to. Bonnie you may not have running water, electric, and everything people have in these big ole towns but you have freedom and doing what you love...
Great video! The area they live in is one of my favorite places on earth. I don’t recall ever seeing that many stars in the sky any other place I have been; it felt like freedom out there. Good for them that they can live “the good life” there. Hope they have many more happy years. RD
These folks are living my dream. I find myself wishing I was born 150 years ago sometimes, but maybe I ought to just do what they're doing and make a happy life right here and now.
just love this video of mr and mrs cain, love how they live, and what they believe in. Much love to you mr and mrs cain, may you always be as blest as your heart desires, wish I could meet you in person, and visit a while, so great
I've been working allnmy life and sometimes i had money to buy everyone at work dinner and other times i cant even buy a bottle of water ,but never been as happy as those people
Wow, amazing people! Thanks Bob for doing wonderful segments like this one. I recently found Texas Country Reporter on a local channel at college and then on RFDTV and have fallen in love with the show and all the wonderful people I've 'met' through it :)
What a great story It would be wonderful to sit on the porch and talk to these folks the wisdom you could gain from just listening Then at the end of the day as your driving off you feel as if you left something behind
Dick and Bonnie are my neighbors and are great folks...I have adopted one of their old longhorns and she spends most of her time at my Field Lab. Her name is Benita.
I would absolutely love to go stay with them for a week and show my daughter this way of life. If society would not take my child away for living like this we would!
@jjohnson56 Let me say your grandparents are an inspiration and it is refreshing to see people still living the old ways. I would love to visit them some day and just hear the amazing tales of their lives in the new old west. God bless em and keep them.
I've worked for them , on that place and another that they take care of.They are good people, but they are still just people. They like their life they live their life according to how they feel they need to live it. Not everybody in the community agrees but who cares it's a free country. Coffee is a modern thing but Chickory was very common. They do live a semi modern life that people don't see on this video, it's not thier fault. TV shows have them way of telling their own story. By the way in West Texas hats in the house And at the table are perfectly fine. We are not east Texas, West Texas rides horses east Texas ride lawnmowers. For those of you who want to attend one of thier revival weeks on thier ranch you can.
A note to jjohnson56. If you live in an arid area like west Texas, try collecting water from rainfall. Multiply sq. footage of collecting area (house roof, shed roof, carport, etc.) times 0.6 per inch of rain. Lets say you have a 20x20 foot roof which is: 400 squire feet. One inch of rain (400 X 0.6 = 240 gallons of water from one inch of rain on a 400 square foot roof. Terlinguia, Texas get an average of 10 inches a year. 400 X 0.6 = 240 X 10 inches= 2400 gallons of water per year. Enough.
Great folks right there, coming from San Antonio these people know how to live. I wonder how they have been doing since this was flimed, I hope them the best.
I was completely speechless to see some of the unthoughtful comments here. I am from Australia and love this clip, wish there is way I can even contact them or write them a card. If you know please share.
Damn my dads mom use to live like this for reals im shocked that she was a hell of a badass grandma that was never scared of anything even those pesky skinwalkers.
@jjohnson56 What general area are they in? I have considered buying land in Hudspeth County, but there is absolutely no water available in the areas were land was reasonably priced. I was told people are having to truck it in from out of the area.
awesome, it was refressing to see people really loving life and living how hollywood attempts to make the old west living look real. Very very neat. :)
Love it ! Who was working / monitoring the Drone? Did a wonderful job, captions and all. Brings back good memories ! That is a good size herd. Thanks for sharing, I zm going to try to save it. Nice music too !❤❤🎉 5:17
Many people search their entire lives to find what the Cains have discovered. As crazy as it sounds the electricity statement rings true. Seems everything today revolves around money, fame and self. Stores never close, people working non stop for material things and cars never stop moving on the roadways. I have always felt a sense of pulling to the mountains or remote country, still do today. But all I do is visit to find peace and restore the spirit long enough to return to the rat race. I do think that simplifying life somewhat would fix a lot of souls in this world. Close everything on Sundays again but church and nothing should be open after 7-8pm. Turn off the TV and phones, and spend time doing nothing. Play music, enjoy nature, visit, eat together and know your own family and neighbors again.
They have a pickup but rarely use it. They have a son near Alpine who brought supplies when needed. Dick told me he had not left the ranch for 7 years. That was back in 2008.
@JayKay62969 With outr government trying to cram the entire populus of the planet into the USA, it is getting impossible to create the the American Dream of having such solitude such as they enjoy.
Progress is discontent, it’s never there, always on its way to. I wouldn’t choose their era, but I do wish for a earlier time, often. We all have the choice to not keep pace with progress.
Wish i could try this but im so born into modern life i would go insane in the first week with out youtube or video games to keep me chill but again i would say "lucky couple living a easy live without no worries and don't have to worry about the illuminati that control the world there not locked up in there prison lucky couple".
