Hi Joe, 1. An amp is only necessary if you have passive speakers, if you have powered (active) speakers then the audio signal straight from the controller to the speaker is all you need. 2. Rekordbox is software for your mac/pc, it's essentially a virtual deck/mixer setup and is what this controller (DDJ-400) controls, it also functions as a hub to prepare and organise your music. This particular controller does not have standalone functionality so you need to have it connected to a laptop with Rekordbox to mix with it. There are some standalone all-in-one options from Pioneer though such as the XDJ-RX and the XDJ-RR. 3. RCA connections have been around a long time yes but they are still found on pretty much all equipment today. Some controllers will offer XLR/TRS outputs but it will vary depending on what you go for, bigger and more pricey controllers tend to have more output (& input) options. Yep that's essentially all you need to get going, we would always recommend checking your laptop specifications with the Rekordbox software requirements to avoid any potential performance problems. If you have/need a booth monitor, you are not an entry level DJ. That is why it hasn't got a booth out.

RCA does generally provide a lower quality signal than XLR, however you can use the DDJ-400 with speakers that have an XLR input by using an RCA to XLR cable. The sound quality is plenty good with the in-built soundcard and RCA connections in the majority of applications, just maybe not if hooking it up to a club-level sound system!

Yes that should work without issues although not entirely necessary if it's more straightforward to connect the speakers to the DDJ directly!

@Alec Barclay ok that's interesting because I've bought it now and I have a quite new Mac just 2 years old but I can only use it for 1hr or 1.15 aprox. If you know of any settings that I can change to reduce the usage of battery power let me know please 😊

How ever you like!! You can either come straight out of the RCAs on the back of the DDJ-400 into your KRKs. Or you can go into the computer via USB and use your soundcard.

Thanks for the reply man ! So just to clarify, should I buy a dual RCA (Two RCA's from both ends), connect two into the DDJ, and connect the 2 left over into each KRK (One RCA in each KRK). ? That way, my computer would have no connection to th KRK's apart from through the DDJ which it's connected to through USB. Is this okay?

That would work... But I'd go RCA-Jack, or RCA-XLR (Jacks or XLRs into each KRK)

Does the jack go into the ddj? If so, where does the headphones go? Sorry i know this is pure beginner shit lol. Its for the DDJ 400; we ordered it recently. Do you guys have a video on how to do this? And also, would it work if i connect the krk's to the computer as usual, and connect the DDJ to the computer via USB, will it still work like that?

Hi there, do you mean to change the format of your music within Rekordbox? If so, unfortunately, there is no transcoding option within Rekordbox to change the format of your music, you would need to use an additional program to do that outside of Rekordbox.

Unfortunately, Apple Music is just a streaming platform so you are unable to incorporate those into Rekordbox. However, any music you have purchased on iTunes itself can be used!

With the DDJ-400 vinyl mode has to be toggled on/off from Rekordbox as there is no dedicated button on the unit, you can still scratch all the same though. Between those it's all pretty level pegging, it will come down to preference. It's somewhat down to if you'd prefer to use Traktor, Serato or Rekordbox. A lot of people do favour Traktor as their favourite software for DJ'ing and the new S2 is a very nice unit, however the trade-off of this is that you'd lose that extra bit of familiarity with club standard gear that you'd get with the DDJ-400, if that's of any value to you.

The S2 MK3 or the DDJ-SB3 would be your best bet as they've both got larger jog wheels than the DDJ-400. Beyond that, out of those two, it would be a matter of taste as to what controller's functions on the unit you prefer and which software you'd prefer to use out of Serato & Traktor. If you have a local DJ store we'd definitely recommend heading down so you can have a feel of the faders and jog wheels for yourself to help decide!

Have a look into Serato DJ & Rekordbox, what software you prefer out of those should help pick the SB3 or RB400. They have many similarities with the biggest difference being their software!
