The big green thing is coil of wire. It's the output inductor that all class D amps have. This one looks to have a steel core, is on it's side and is wrapped in heatshrink. They can get pretty hot so you don't usually see them covered. There's also a smaller inductor near the power and ground terminals. That's to filter noise from going back into your vehicles electrical system. The better quality amps always have this. (That Prime 500 has one) That's a nice looking unit. It's got the glue on top of the transformer to prevent the wires from vibrating and shorting out. Plus glue to hold it in place. I like it.
Back then to me Pioneer was top of the line. It was what everyone I knew wanted. I almost always ran them for a head unit. I had and loved the 10 inch truck subs. Sounded great and hit well to boot. Had a friend who had an astro van with eight mill 12s and it was rediculs for the time. My first real big demo to get. No one around had anything close. Those subs were great. Just like MTX I wish they were still in the game like that but unfortunately I think the game has out grown them. Haha yeah it seems all the bass knobs are that way..
This is a review of perfect timing for me, I just picked up the GM-D8701, so I was very pleasantly surprised at these dyno results! I feel it's a great amp of good quality and a keeper
Blew one amp replaced it temporarily with this.. it stayed in the truck longer than expected. Even made me buy their 4 channel. Upgraded to Hertz since then, but for the money.. Pioneer me.
What a great video, my friend. The best of the year. I was really surprised by the power response at 1 ohm from the Pioneer amp. Here in Latin America, Pioneer is a very respected brand for car stereos and subwoofer speakers, but not so well known for amps. Greetings @Stereo Mojo
@stereomojo was there a difference between some if the internal components of the two models? I think I remember reading thar on the site or somewhere online. Regardless it's a very small difference but every test I've ever seen has them being quite underrated. I'd probably keep it if I had one to go with my nostalgic deh series head units from back in the day
That amp looks familiar! Yay!! I like the looks of that one with the gold-plated rca's! Mine doesn't have those. I absolutely love mine. Thank you for doing this video. If you wanna see mine in action, it's on my channel under "install done."
🔥I ve enjoyed the video, it’s a Great, simple and concise coverage in the distinguishing details on the multitude of pioneer amps , I’ve had to pay closer attention and learn in the last few months since jumping a little back into car audio. Just missed out on an slightly older Pioneer PREMIER class D mono amp for pretty good price, I believe model PRS d1000m , if you could get your hands on one would be interesting to see how it performs and compares to this one you’ve reviewed!
Back many moons ago; Pioneer head units included super tuner 3, fm radio tuner. It had top notch fm radio tuner and could pull out weak stations with ease. Now most all of everything is made in china
Man, I love Rockford. Probably gonna upgrade my 4 channel with a RF soon . Not gonna replace my Harmony tho lol. Great vid on the Pioneer, nice amp 👍 👌
My bass knob needs to be replaced. I have it turned almost at zero & out of nowhere my subs stood up almost out the boxes 😂😂. I was "holy sheep chit" 😂
@barnes29510 Check your wire connections. If the knob gets disconnected the amp will jump to the gain setting. Maybe spray the cable contacts with electrical contact cleaner.
If you think it's the potentiometer inside the knob, take the housing off and spray the same cleaner inside the pot and turn the knob back and forth a bunch of times. The traces in the pot might get oxidized over time and when turned to that position it loses contact (you get the same result as unplugging the cable)
@@JasonWW2000 okay. Cool! I will definitely check it out. The drain hose for water that runs down the windshield runs inside the car, behind the kick panel on the 2000 Accords and over time they become hard and will come loose.... That happened a few months back and my floor board got wet.... So it's a good chance there's corrosion inside the knob... Thank you! I would have never thought about that. 🫵🏻💪🏻🇺🇸
Hey , sounds familiar , that has happened on my martin Logan home powered subwoofer level control. Typically a fouled out pot control You may want to try this electronic cleaner/ lube for control called De Ox it , we use it all the time on old vintage stereo amps and equipment
The green component is an inductor/coil, being used as a filter choke. BCAE1 is a good website that explains electronic components and common usage. There's also a really good amplifier repair tutorial, but that section might have a paywall now (likely due to stupid and lazy people asking questions where the answers are already there, they just didn't do the required reading).
Put up some healthy numbers I knew what these do I had 2 of them they love .8 ohm and .66 ohm if u can get it to not protect at .66 ohm it does very solid power numbers I had 2 use 2 50 amp fuses when wired below 1 ohm I was pulling 150 amps.
Pause! Ohhh, I hope she puts out (puts out🤣).... I've been a fan of pioneer since the 80s. And I've looked at this one a couple times. (Also, I snagged a new Recoil (1640 4chan) for 80 bucks yesterday.
I have the GM D8601 amp and from what I can tell, it has the same specs as well. 1ohm 800rms. Whats really the difference other than it was made in 2017. It pounds 4 Skar 10s wired at 1ohm, pretty good.
I dont know what kind of secret sauce Rockford puts into their subwoofer amplifiers, but I sure do like their punchy, dynamic tonal characteristics. I've tested out a few other brands and they just didn't match up. They had a more mellow, softer tone to them.
@stereomojo Yeah. I've got 3 of the 1998 vintage 225.2, a 500a2, 4 of the T10001BD, a T5002, a Prime 500, 750 and 1200, and a matching R400 4D. So 13 Rockfords. I'd like to get a T2500-1bdCP with the blue meters, but it's hard to find a cheap one.
I have a 60ix that was basically used like a neighborhood ho everyone used it at some point, when something happened to their amp I let them use it until they got a new amp. It looks horrible, but It still works.
@@stereomojoI really appreciate the response. I didn’t bother looking into it. Got a CT Sounds 1000 mono and am very happy. That paired with the Hydro 12 2ohm wired at 1ohm BANGS.
@@stereomojoalso…. Why is the “normal” gain position at 12oclock? I barely had mine at the 3oclock point and it would distort like crazy clipping the sub with the bass turned all the way down on the head unit.
I have a loc with left and right. I plug them in to this amp and the sound/subwoofer goes way down, with no bass. I unplug either the left or right and it starts hitting with deep bass, how it should sound. This doesn't seem normal. How can I fix this?
