Thank you so much to post SPEC-1/SPEC-2, and this is the best New Year's gift for me. At age 23, I came to the US in 1964 and opened Pioneer Electronics USA Corp. in the Empire State Building in NYC, the only building I knew in NYC. I am still living in the US at age 82 after all these years and am happened to be the one who named the SPEC-1/SPEC-2. Your comment was so nice and graceful, and brought tears in my eyes. Now that I learned of your site, I will watch all of them one by one. Again, thank you for your excellent introduction of Pioneer and its products. Have a great New Year!

Wow! Thank you so much for commenting. I'm am just amazed to have someone comment who was a part of this equipment's history! I have seen your name mentioned online and have read online some of your history at Pioneer. I love the history of the equipment and the people like yourself who are a part of that history. If you have the time I'd appreciate it if you would email me at mrbrain1733@gmail.com, my name is Chris as I'd love to know everything that you know about the Pioneer corporation, the SPEC series or anything else related to vintage audio. Thank you again and Happy New Year to you also.

I have a spec 1 system that was in my local ad for 2 months for $450, all original and rack. I was never a big pioneer collector but I never passed a good deal on vintage gear. So I contacted the woman and she just wanted it gone as it was her father’s. I thought about it for 2 weeks as I had a ton of vintage gear. Finally I reached her and asked if she was flexible on price, yes she said Went over and was not sure it worked but it was a beautiful system! She turned it on and played the tape on the 707, I was on. Finally I agreed to I would take it for $200 as it needed to be restored and no one was really showing interest. I loaded it up in my car and the rest in history She is beautiful and I just have it sitting where I can enjoy looking at it as it is all mint One day I’ll have someone refurbish it and I’ll enjoy the beauty and sound Mostly for me though, it’s the pure beauty of the gleaming all chrome sitting so perfectly in its vintage glory 👌

Great story! You are right, when it is gone, it's gone..... I had a Sx-1250 I bought from a fella back in the early 90's for $100. He used it to DJ. It was awesome and wish now I would have not given it way. Hind sight is always 20/20. I love what you are doing.

I just acquired a Pioneer M-73 amplifier and Pioneer C-73 preamplifier (1977-80 Japan). Both were in spectacular condition, almost new looking, and have sent the amp for full restoration. I just got the pre and will send it for the same soon. These are little brothers to the Spec 4 amp and Spec 1 pre. (dual mono for the amp). I just love them!!!

Happy to have found your channel. I've been interested in building a vintage system and I'm now doing my research. I've had many systems over the years but I'll never forget my first nice one in the early 80's when I was in my early 20's. It was a Kenwood receiver, Technics turn table with RTR 400D tower's I believe.

fantastic ! i lived in Japan for 7 years, returning to US in 2018. I have a special affinity for the country, love the old Pioneer video. That excursive radio program from the 50s' is played every day in the JAL hangars at start of shift for daily exercise, to this day. I know this because i worked there. An "audio" exercise program, every citizen has the moves committed to memory from childhood , so Japanese.

I used to work for a hifi store while in 11th grade and sold the Spec 1 and 2, I got to try them alone at a large audio room, with JBL 300 Summit, the space of the room expanded the sound was clear, sort of being at the live concert (queen) on a pioneer open reel as the source ... the window vibrated and the bricks of the walls were also moving. Thank you for the interesting history of Pioneer ,,….The thought of owning a 1970s vintage receiver never ever entered my mind until I laid eyes on a Pioneer SX- 5590 during an estate sale in my neighborhood. I was there to buy a lawn and garden tractor and went home with the entire stereo package and the lawn and garden tractor, Long story short her husband was the original owner I had the Pioneer receiver checked and refurbished this absolutely beautiful stereo component embarrassed a new Accuphase E-280 integrate I sold . Currently the SX-5590 is in my home office system driving a pair of TeKton Lore speakers,,. They are an absolute fantastic match together that went way beyond all my expectations, I am now a true believer in well designed and built vintage electronics,..

While we could not afford the higher grade Pioneer home stuff in the 1980s, my dad made the stretch to install the Pioneer KPX9000 cassette and tuner head unit with separate power amp into our Chrysler automobile. That was one helluva superb sounding system and I enjoyed music in the car far better than on the home stereo for much of the time we had it.

It's hard to believe that this component sounds better than today's componets. But, it's true. I, have an all Denon music only stereo system. The looks, sound and built is not even close. I've always favored Pioneer, over the other brands back in the 70's. I, think what changed everthing was home theater in the mid 80's. That's when I, think componets like the Spec 1 and 2, were doomed.

Thank you so much for producing this video. It is remarkable to see these units brought up to spec (heh heh) - beyond spec, strictly speaking - and they work no worse than anything produced today would. Sure, I’ve got a Crown class-D amp that I’m going to be using for keyboards and it’s much less expensive, weighs a lot less than a SPEC2, takes up half the rack space, and has some nice digital assignment and filtering features but its noise floor is hot garbage; you wouldn’t want it as a low-level music listening amp on a bet. On the other hand, this SPEC2 would be fantastic at low *or* police-were-called levels and I’d use one to run my keyboard rig through in a heartbeat if I could.

As sophisticated as this mid 1970's pieces look, you can still see the humble origins of the Japanese electronic industry in their use of phenolic based circuit boards. If these had been made in the United States they most likely would have used computer grade glass epoxy circuit boards. That quibble aside, I agree these are excellent pieces that represent the pinnacle of mass produced Japanese audio electronics.

@@solodolo6018 Correct. Although Sony ES and Accuphase always used glass epoxy boards. Only the mid and lower end stuff used phenolic boards. The use of this cheaper material hails back to the first Japanese made transistor radios of the mid 1950's.

Yeah I'm sure. I still have an old Genesis class A/B car audio amp in the car it's outlasted several cars, the guy that designed it is still going strong he moved on from genesis but now has a company called amp doctor in the uk. My amp has been back to him twice over the years for refreshes and upgrades, every time it comes back mint condition sounding better than ever. None of the newer class d stuff sounds as good as that thing does so I really understand people's attachment to older gear as the bandwidth is uncapped unlike the new stuff. I like class d it's power efficient and great for many situations but you can't beat the warm glow of a nice old classic receiver running some nice big 12inch + paper cones.

I just realized that the pioneer logo is an omega sign with a tunig fork... Never noticed before :D Being the last letter of the Greek alphabet, the Omega symbol is typically used to denote the end of something, or the last/final/ultimate limit of it. It also symbolizes something great or the end of an increment of great development, where this increment could be the universe, the planet, a country or even an individual.

Am 60 years old and remember analog from my teen years in the 70s. The receivers, the EQs; especially the stereo speakers. They simply literally don't make components like that anymore regarding fidelity quality. Analog home stereo equipment rules. Today I may listen to CDs primarily, but they run thru vintage Harmon Kardon receiver and vintage 2-way Infinity speakers. Call me a dinosaur, I don't care. A beautiful combo, my JVC JAS-71 (which I got new) looks uncannily like that pre-amp with nearly identical features. In 440 plus years the only fault I have had to fix was due to connecting a cassette deck with a live chassis to it. Which blew a transistor up in the speaker protection circuit. The hazards of doing repairs for friends... I should have known better a label on the cassette deck did say "mains transformer?", it never occurred to me that it was a primary to secondary short.... As a younger person that amplifier was used for all sorts of things, even driving car ignition coils... it never bothered it. Was always careful not to scratch the thing so it looks like new still after over 40 years... only modification as such was a potential divider on AUX inputs to more suit levels from a CD player....

Thank you for sharing this awesome video. Japan made very good quality components and equipment all made by hand. I remember working at Radio Schack a Korean person came in and took apart my display to see where the stereo equipment was made. Sony made a lot of the higher end Realistic Receivers as OEM and sold as Realistic. Today the audio equipment is design and made to be tossed in the trash not repairable. Its sad America is so ignorant to see that foreigners like Asian countries treat them as invaders, but dont realize the contribution they have done with these wonderful ideas and creations like these beautifully engineered equipment. What we dont see behind the scenes, the engineering that went into making these master pieces. These master pieces such as Marantz and McIntosh to name a few. Like Marantz boasted that the output wattage marked was a guarantee output for sound output. Not a marking gig where they define the peak outout like other audio equipment indicated.

The total weight of the new pair hardly equals that of a single old speaker. Still longing for the incredibly deep and smooth sound of the real stuff. i had just bought a sx-848 if memory doesn't fail me and having already since the 60's lots of pioneer components , but my father , this to protect himself from spending a fortune in a high-end Revox system that only later he added a cd player , he ofered me his already owned for some years pioneer high-end system to me , like i needed something better and he would need a new system also , so as amplification system he gave me his spec 1 and 2 also that deck with three displays from pioneer ,that the comercial had a big image of a nakamichi deck saying , we might not have the best cassette deck in the world but at least we spent the best materials and a modern design in building it ...etc. and in the low right corner of the page was a litle photo of the pioneer high-end deck , i don't if you seen it but was hilarious , this pre-amplifier was perfect to me at the ti.e and till today i don't know if i seen one so complete , it as a litle knob to increase the volume of the phono 1 or 2 if mc cartridge , don:t remenber it quite well because i have it stored , waiting for the works in a old house i bought to be concluded , but in the 70's pioneer was a perfect brand but along with others , i myself bought a thorens and a technics turntable , not that the pioneer didn't sound perfect , but i think this is from the 76 ir 7 catalog , wich everything that i owned from pioneer works perfect today , maybe living in a very dry region it helped , also had tannoy and celestion ditton speakers , the best material came out without a doubt in the 70's not that today there aren't good components but has they were still are very expensive, regards and have a happy new year

Nice video and very informative. I always enjoy watching your equipment restoration videos. Quick question: I have a Pioneer ELITE M-91 power amplifier that will be 30 years old next year. It’s used on a almost daily basis and still plays very loud on both channels. It’s running a pair of very efficient Klipsch RF-7II’s through Kimber Kable bi-wired 12TC 8 AWG speaker wire. Should I be concerned about the filter caps due to their age, even if it sounds & operates just fine, or go ahead now and replace them? I bought this amp new back in October 1993 from a local audio dealer. I want to say this amp containes ELNA brand filter caps and I believe Pioneer used the ELNA brand for a long time in their Receivers/amps.

Let me put it this way. A close friend of mine is a repair technician for McIntosh audio. He told me even the best made electrolytic capacitors have a maximum lifespan of 30 years regardless of the hours of usage. After that it is only a matter of time before they fail. And sometimes it can be catastrophic. Pioneer Elite series is good equipment. Don't wait. Besides if you use top shelf stuff like Panasonic electric works or F and T you may be amazed how much improvement in sound you get. My friend told me manufacturers pick capacitors from sources that provide 1000s consistently. Not necessarily for best sound or performance. You as an individual can research buy the best.

I most certainly and definitely wholeheartedly agree with the statement that often times vintage is better, However there is one quite glaring caveat and of course that is its functionality vis-à-vis its repairability. I have effectively given up on vintage audio due to the fact that every time I get a great Yamaha piece or a great pioneer piece such as the ones you have here I cannot seem to get them to last more than six or seven months and my local repair guy wants an inordinate amount of money to repair them. So in the interest of a long lasting product and a warrantable product I have settled on the newer Marantz integrated amplifiers and range of products most of which in my opinion retain much of that vintage sound you as well as me and of course as well as numerous people praise and enjoy.

It just gives you two speaker capability. No different then if you had a speaker A and B on your SPEC-2 instead of the SPEC-1. You would operate the volume levels from the SPEC-1 and SPEC-2 like you would normally. If you want the SPEC-1's volume control to have more range keep the output levels of the SPEC-2 lower. If you want a shorter range keep the output controls of the SPEC-2 higher.

Interesting Why do you change the transistors; do they age like capacitors?
@vintageaudioaddict
@vintageaudioaddict 2 года назад
Some transistors in vintage audio gear have reputations for being noisy/failing but most are fine to leave in. I experiment from time to time like I did in this unit by replacing the original transistors with modern equivalents. I do this to see if I can hear any difference between them. I couldn't hear any difference and that is usually the case. The electrolytic capacitors are another story. They need to be replaced in all gear this old for best sound quality and reliable operation.

You may have to do some searching for your particular situation but here is a list of the original transistors along with it's modern replacement that I found at hudsonvalleyhifi.com many years ago that they were nice enough to have posted. 2SA489a -> KSB596Y 2SA493 -> KSA992 2SA497 -> KSA1013 2SA606 -> 2N5416 2SA628 -> KSA1013 *watch pin outs 2SA640 -> KSA992 2SA720 -> KSA1013 or KSA1220 *check voltages 2SA722 -> KSA992 2SA725 -> KSA992 2SA726 -> KSA992 2SA733 -> KSA733 or KSA992 2SA763 -> KSA992 2SB507 -> KSA940 or MJE15033G 2SB536 -> KSA940 2SB539 -> MJ21193G 2SC458 -> KSC1845 2SC485 -> KSC1845 / KSC2073 2SC497 -> KSC2383 2SC693 -> KSC1845 2SC732 -> KSC1845 2SC789a -> KSD526Y 2SC793 -> MJ21194G 2SC857 -> KSC2310 2SC869 -> KSC2310 2SC870 -> KSC1845 2SC871 -> KSC1845 2SC905 -> KSD1616 2SC945 -> KSC2383 or KSC945 2SC959 -> 2N3440 2SC984 -> KSC2383 2SC1000 -> KSC1845 2SC1060 -> KSD526 (output drivers) 2SC1124 -> KSC2690 2SC1175A -> KSC1845 (phono section, Marantz 2325) 2SC1212 -> KSC2690 2SC1213 -> KSC2383 2SC1222 -> KSC1845 2SC1312 -> KSC1845 2SC1313 -> KSC1845 2SC1318 -> KSC2690 2SC1328 -> KSC1845 2SC1344 -> KSC1845 2SC1345 -> KSC1845 2SC1364 -> KSC2383 2SC1384 -> KSC2690 2SC1416 -> KSC1845 2SC1451 -> KSC3503 2SC1515 -> KSC2310 2SC1624 -> MJE15030G 2SC1775 -> KSC1845 2SD287 -> MJ21194G 2SD313 -> KSC2073 or MJE15032G 2SD325 -> KSC2073 2SD381 -> KSC2073 2SD669 -> KSC3503 (output coupled thermal regulator in marantz 2245 and 2270) 2SD712 -> KSC2073

@@vintageaudioaddict I actually live 45 min from Hudson HiFi! So you replace with recommended newer transistors then, my next question to you is if you notice any difference in sound with the newer stuff, good or bad? My amp needed 2SC3281/2SA1302, Id actually like to obtain another 2 or 3 sets to keep aside just in case. Thank you much for the cross ref sheet!

To change all the electrolytes I think is a "must" ..... But to change all the transistors I think is another story, cause you are totally change the original sound of the equipment.

I disagree. As long as everything is adjusted to spec, the result is going to be just fine. Any differences would likely be no more than unit-to-unit differences as they came off the line. It’s so much more important to have a reliable and functionally sound device that I can’t imagine not replacing parts in hopes of maintaining some sort of “magic” peculiar to a given unit. Besides, it’s present-day “magic” will have drifted in at least some small way from what it was like when it was new.

Hi, first of all thank you for watching. The power supply regulator transistors I usually change out in my restorations as they go through a difficult life. The signal transistors in the remainder of any of my equipment is a different story. Some I change out because they have a reputation of failing in some manner after all these years. Others I change out to experiment. To see if I can hear a difference between the old and the new. In this case I really couldn't hear a difference.

Japanese manufacturers have a different market philosophy than American counterparts. Here we associate high end luxury with brand names. Such as Rolex, Cadillac, Mark levinson, etc. In Japan it is much more common for manufacturers to make everything from low end to top of line under the same nameplate. Pioneer, Sony, Techniques, TEAC, Yamaha, Kenwood all made very high end audio equipment right along entry level cheap stuff.

Pioneer Elite separates are built better than spec. Elite c90/C90a preamplifier has 3 transformers, independent transformers for each Channel, dual mono construction. Parts are newer, nichicon Muse for audio, ucon, soshin foil capacitors, brass cap carbon resistors. I have Pioneer Elite separates and for me its a keeper. I did already partial renovation

@@pioneernut7487 I am quite familiar with the Elite series. I recall that there was a matching speaker that went with the electronics you own. It had linked front and rear firing woofers. Quite interesting if you can find them.

Because a piece of older electronics is operating does not mean it is operating as well as it could. Electrolytic capacitors have a limited lifespan. google "electrolytic capacitor lifespan" or checkout this video - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-RaWrYJ6amcA.html
