A famous photograph from 1875 shows the archaeologist Lane Fox standing above a large trench excavated into the ditch of the Cissbury Ring ramparts with evidence for a mine shaft sitting below. This was proof that the defences at Cissbury post-dated the Neolithic flint mining activity.
This is believe to be the first photograph to show archaeological stratigraphy clearly an important milestone in the development of archaeological science. Today you can stand in a similar location and try to peel back the layers of history surrounding you.
