I've tried a new format this time, filmed in 1080p with my DSLR (as opposed to 2.7k on a GoPro) as well as skipping the music and using the actual video sounds. I'd love to hear if you prefer this style to the old one? Please leave a like on your favorite style below :-)

Great looking pipe man I've got a chunk of rose roots dried for two years I'd like made into a good pipe
@MassisPipes
@MassisPipes 2 года назад
Thanks! As for the rose roots: I'm not sure that's actually possible. I have no experience with roses (different from rosewood, which is a tree) but you'd need to have it carefully dried to not have cracks, plus it would probably have to be boiled for several hours before drying to remove tannins and other oils from the wood. Even then, it might be toxic.

@Ivegotwormsinme
@Ivegotwormsinme 2 года назад
Two questions (from a novice woodworker- lathes, staining): What type of wood are you using to get such a green mouthpiece? Pine maybe? I'm assuming you're using some type of dye with that. And also, what type of stain did you use to get that bowl such a rich cherry hue at around 8:30? Was that only achieved after staining and blasting for a darker base-coat? You do some fantastic work, my friend. I appreciate the blending of using wood and metal lathe equipment in your craft.
@MassisPipes
@MassisPipes 2 года назад
The stem is not wood but Ebonite rod, a type of vulcanised rubber. The product at 8.30 isn't stain, simply a thinly diluted shellac. This pipe had a base coat of dark chocolate stain if I'm not mistaken, then lightly blasted to again and next finished with a mocassin brown topstain I believe.
@Ivegotwormsinme
@Ivegotwormsinme 2 года назад
@@MassisPipes Well that goes to show you how much of a novice I am. You just gave me so many ideas. I've been making handles for a set of chisels I found that were half destroyed and I've been wanting to do something special with them and I believe I just figured out what to do. Thanks, man!
@Bardurf
@Bardurf 3 года назад
what is that black stuff you put on it mid sandblasting? looks hella cool
@MassisPipes
@MassisPipes 3 года назад
Black Fiebing's leather dye. It is absorbed into the wood, but then the softer wood is blasted away easier than the rest and you get contrast :-)

Beautiful pipe and amazing process! So am i correct in thinking a hand made pipe is done in a similar fashion but without using motorized tools and just pure hand grit? Hence why some of the hand made's cost near an arm and a leg (no pun intended).
@MassisPipes
@MassisPipes 2 года назад
Actually 95% of all "handmade" pipes are made this way, with a lathe, sanding disc, ... Handmade in a "handmade pipe" simply means it's not made by an automatic machine milling it by a template, but by a person controlling everything by hand. So even "handmade" pipes costing several thousands of dollars, are nearly always made with lathes etc. Pipes made without power tools are extremely rare, I don't recall ever hearing of any quality pipe made without power tools in the past 10 years I've been making pipes.
@samiam3297
@samiam3297 2 года назад
@@MassisPipes Thank you for your response. I have a chunk of briar that had the chamber and stem fitting hole pre-drilled..i suspect ill be sharpening my lil knives often and using much elbow grease in the process since i don't have a lathe. Those kits are the best way to get started if you have no experience carving stems. If you're in the US, either Rawkrafted or Vermont Freehand have everything you need, including briar. If you just want to practice, tell them. They often have cheaper practice blocks for a few dollars each.

What type wood are you using. I make pipes with deer antler and woud like to expand and make some out of wood.
@MassisPipes
@MassisPipes 2 года назад
Briar is by far the best and most commonly used wood for pipemaking. Some cheaper options are cherry, pear or maple, but they'll wear out a lot quicker and often crack. Olive and morta (bog oak) are quality options too.

How do you condition the inside of the bowl to build up that layer of char?
@MassisPipes
@MassisPipes 2 года назад
If a pipe's well made, no conditioning should be needed. Simply fill the bowl for only 1/3 for the first few smokes, then 2/3 for a few and only then fill it up completely. That carbon cake layer will form on it's own naturally. Just as a safety precaution, because you never know how careful a client is going to be, I generally coat my pipes with a mixture largely consisting of activate carbon powder along with some other ingredients, unless a client specifically asks me not to. There's a ton of varients of this mixture out there, with people using sugar, honey, egg whites, yoghurt, maple syrup, ... or the non-organic waterglass.
@chrisxdeboy
@chrisxdeboy 2 года назад
@@MassisPipes I've certainly heard of honey being used. Not sure how I feel about egg whites or yogurt being used. Perhaps food grade gum Arabic would be a better alternative to those?

Yup, the shape and size were special, but unfortunately there were some large sandpits on the shank that did not allow a lightly stained smooth pipe. Such is the nature of the briar lottery.
