Pipe-organ give-away to good home! (See, also, • Pipe-organ Giveaway! -... )
This organ is in a small chapel, now closed, on the Isle of Man (of TT Motorcycle fame) off the west coast of the UK.
It was built in the 1880s by H.W. Hewitt, who always used second-hand parts, so it must be well over 130 years old.
The stops are: Open Diapason, Clarabella, Gamba, Flute 4', Principal 4' (from middle C) Octave Coupler, Pedal Coupler, Pedal Bourdon (12 pipes, only).
It plays perfectly well, and a suitable person or organisation is welcome to take it down as it stands. It is still in good order, and was regularly maintained and tuned until the chapel closed in 2014.
.
Amazingly, no other church on the Isle of Man seems to want this little instrument, which is why it is being offered, here. (One Church did seem to be interested, but in the end some unenlightened members of the congregation persuaded the others that their entertainment electronic organ, with its offset keyboards and 13 stick pedals, was a better bet, despite the two organists of the church being very much in favour of a change!)
.
This recording was made after the organ had stood in an unheated, unused building for over two years.
.
Whilst the instrument is working just as it always did, with no mechanical faults and could be removed and set up, just as it stands, now, the organ-builder recommends that it is overhauled when taken down. This would cover a general cleaning, new tuning slides and any minor pipe repairs and (most significantly) a complete overhaul of the soundboard. The cost of this, including dismantling and re-assembly (but not including travelling and transportation costs off the Isle of Man) is likely to be around £4,000.00 - actually a nominal figure, considering the amount of work involved.
.
Leave a comment, if you would like more information on the availability of this instrument, but act quickly, as the chapel has been sold and the organ must be removed.
(Posted May 2nd., 2016.)
A video demonstration of each of the stops can be seen at:

What a beautiful organ. So happy to hear it found a new home. No pipe organ deserves to be left in an un heated building. Such a beautiful sound.

Lovely...The sound is so warm and full. As a priest, I could listen to this fine instrument and never grow tired of its colors!

Thanks for this comment. It's a great shame that, these days, so many clergy do not appreciate 'traditional' music in church, even to the point of introducing the 'worship band,' and other forms of degraded music, presumably in an effort to popularize the service.

In an unexpected turn of events, the organ has been given to a church in the area of Seville, in Spain, where it is to be renovated and set up by a group who are seeking to re-introduce the sung liturgy into the Catholic services, there. (Presumably, they have become sick of the 'guitar and bongo-drum' approach!) It seems that quite a number of churches there have 'lost' their pipe-organs over the years, and this group is working to reverse that trend.

I wish I could do something about this beauty. It's a shame that these organs have a hard time finding a home
@Offshoreorganbuilder
@Offshoreorganbuilder 8 лет назад
+Reagan Reese I agree, of course. Once these instruments are gone, they are gone forever, and the electronic substitutes which some churches buy are just that - substitutes. Like false teeth they are *not* as good as the real thing, however convincing they may appear!

A builder by the name of H.W. Hewitt of Leicester put it together from second-hand parts in the 1880s. (See www.culturevannin.im/special/church_organ/Croit-e-Caley.pdf and ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-genqAyo_jHk.html)

Incredibly fine sounding for such a small instrument. I have spoken to the priest about the possibility of getting a pipe organ installed within the church and he was fairly open to the idea! There are some very fine redundant instruments on the IBO website.
@Offshoreorganbuilder
@Offshoreorganbuilder 7 лет назад
That's true. Often, these instruments are well worth having, but do not fall into the trap of thinking that every redundant organ is a fine instrument in good condition. Some are not. The trouble is (in most cases) the congregation will not stomach the cost of removal and/or renovation. They would rather stay with their third-rate electronic. They are used to it, and it's neat and convenient and *cheap.* (Whatever happened to the idea that only the best was good enough for the House of God? That seems to have gone out of the window.) Often, it takes only one person to torpedo the idea of making the change and getting a pipe-organ, though I have to say that it also takes only one person at the meeting (there is always a meeting, of course) to push it through. Curiously, if the roof needs to be replaced, at the cost of £80,000 or some such, or a new heating system is needed, the people are horrified, but they take it on-board and work out how to go about raising the funds. But spend £10,000 or £30,000 on an organ? No way! I had a friend who suggested a pipe-organ to his priest, and the reply was, "Do you know how much those bloody things cost?!!"
@szymongorczynski7621
@szymongorczynski7621 7 лет назад
Offshoreorganbuilder Of course it wouldn't be a big organ. The reply I got was "Yeah, we could look into that. It wouldn't be a big organ though but it's a good thought for the future." The church never had an organ of any sort and currently the music is provided by a guitar band. I've got my eye on this instrument here: www.ibo.co.uk/resources/pre-owned/detail.php?refNo=524 And here's the NPOR site: www.npor.org.uk/NPORView.html?RI=V00250 The survey looks very detailed so by the looks of things the organ seems to have been well looked after. A few years ago my good friend's (and fellow organist's) church spent £12,000 on an Allen digital organ. Surely for that money they could have got themselves a very nice second hand instrument.
@Offshoreorganbuilder
@Offshoreorganbuilder 7 лет назад
My thoughts on this are that it is an awful lot of organ to be squeezed into that rather nice, compact, case. It could be a nightmare to tune and maintain, and that would have to be investigated. I mistrust the electronic basses on the pedals, but, admittedly, I haven't heard them. (What if they give problems? Who is going to fix them? Who had the bad taste to add speakers and electronic gubbage to this instrument in the first place?) The specification suggests that it has been messed about with and HNB weren't particularly good in some of their work in the 1960s. Certainly, it is nice and compact, but there is a reason that it's being disposed of. Wonder why? The condition may not be brilliant. As for the guitar band, I have only one comment: degenerates! Still ... good luck with your attempts to introduce an organ, but I suspect it may fail for the reasons I have already given in a previous comment.
@Offshoreorganbuilder
@Offshoreorganbuilder 7 лет назад
Oh ... and regarding the Allen. The church made a duff decision, and whoever was the organist at the time must bear part of the responsibility. The thing will sound 'OK' but never really 100%. That's what they have bought - and 'almost good enough, but it was cheap and convenient, and anyway, look at all those stops and buttons to press.' Pathetic.
@szymongorczynski7621
@szymongorczynski7621 7 лет назад
Offshoreorganbuilder Well of course we wouldn't be jumping head first into purchasing it. It would be good to hear if it actually sounds! It's kind of important to do a bit more investigation. In regards to the the speaker stops, if they start playing up then pull the wires our. Why would you need 3 flues on the pedal? Why would anyone want a mixture in with the pedals? But anyways, if this organ doesn't work out then there's plenty more out there on the website.

Awwww so so sad. I do hate this. Wouldn't the church make a lovely home?! Alas, time and money.... I suppose. The organ sounds beautiful to me! Oh, how I wish I had lots of money... I'd come there and swoop it all up and keep it as it is and live forever.... As a needle pointer, I do love the cushion. Look at those windows! And countryside. Would make a beautiful studio. I get so frustrated with the knowledge I have, where money doesn't go to my head; but, lack thereof. Sigh.
@Offshoreorganbuilder
@Offshoreorganbuilder 8 лет назад
+Sandra Henderson As you say, it *is* very sad to see a chapel like this. The bottom line is, that not enough people cared about the building and the chapel community, when it was open for business. It says something about our day and age, that a chapel like Croit-e-Caley can stay open for 133 years, but in our time, it is allowed to fail. The funding needed to save the organ is not great, and, indeed, is being subsidized by the organ-builder. Think of what many people spend on holidays, or a car(!)

Yes! (**(But see the pinned comment at the top of this page.)) I hope to be able to confirm that, in the next few weeks, the organ will be going to a church in Ireland. This looks extremely likely, but I'll wait until it actually happens, then post the news with all the details. Thanks for your interest.
