Sir, I would like to honestly say thank you. This information was very helpful to me. Years ago my dad use to smoke tobacco pipes, and he too, had a collection. They were so unique. Some of them were made out of ivory tusk, and with our difficult father and son relationship I left at the age of 19 from the house, and unfortunately, he passed away at age 52 and somehow his pipe collection as well got lost. I myself am 50 years old now and have picked up the tobacco pipe hobby for about two months now and I’m enjoying every minute of it. I have in my collection now about eight tobacco pipes, and so far around 12 flavored tobacco’s. I truly was looking for a more in-depth description of tobacco types and you nailed it. Thank you again, Stay safe and sound. 👍🏽✌🏽
I'm 17! I hate to admit but i do smoke cigarettes daily. But now a few weeks ago me and my friends were chilling at our friends place and my friend took out his fathers pipe collection and we tested one we packed it with i think it was called "black vanilla" or "night vanilla" and with the first hit it blew my mind! I didn't really even taste the vanilla but it was amazing cigarettes tasted like shit after that! Now planning on quitting cigarettes and buying a pipe when i turn 18
I've lost count on how many times I've watched this video... And everytime I watch it, I get something "new" that I had forgotten. Thank you so much, Jeff! Best wishes, Arthur.
A common misconception is that beginners should start off with aromatics, and that English type blends are for more advanced pipe smokers. In fact, nothing could be further from the truth. For one thing, aromatic blends tend to smoke really hot, which is very off-putting for the smoker - few people are going to stick with a pipe if the experience likens to swallowing a lit match. For another, aromatic tobaccos never taste anything like the room note, no matter how pleasant that may be, so disappointment is inevitable. Finally, you either like pipe tobacco or else you don't, so if you start off with an English blend, you'll be able to make that decision rather quickly. Dunhill's Elizabethan Mixture would be a good place to start. For inveterate cigarette smokers, I would suggest Dunhill's Nightcap - you'll quickly learn you don't need to inhale to get a strong nicotine kick.
I've been a pipe smoker for 8 years now and a cigarette smoker for 25. Pipe helped me to quit cigarettes from 25/30 per day to 0 in 15 months (yes I know that's pathetic), and I completely agree with you never put a beginner or someone who wants to quit smoking on aromatics. English/Balkan blends or aged virginas are the way.
Yeah, I got myself some aromatic Peterson and some hardcore Balkan Flake. The brutal, smoky, leathery taste of the Balkan was so much better to my palette than that smooth, fruity Peterson. Yuck.
Rascal77s Oh, yeah. My brothers a cold steel fan- so for his birthday this year I’m buying him two swords- one a cold steel, the other an equally priced higher grade blade. See if that sets him straight.
I usually have no interest in most all of your videos but somehow they seem to always capture my interest and i'll find myself watching and listening to a video about pipes and tobacco even when I never see myself using one! Overall great job on all your videos!
Awesome video. I've been smoking for roughly two years and theres always something new to learn. Will be recommending this video to anyone interested in this hobby/pastime
The more you experiment, the more you'll learn. For example I've found that pipes that tend to run hot are better for English blends whereas pipes that run cool work best with Cavendish aromatics. Your experience may differ but over time I've come to associate certain tobaccos with particular pipes if I want the best results. If a new smoker asked me what should work best for them I'd say a corn cob with an over the counter pouch like Capt, Black, Amphora, Orlik etc. Why? Well cheap they may be but corncobs work well with all tobaccos, especially when still fairly new. The reason why those over the counter blends are so popular is because they have been blended to give the best average taste and smell, thats why they are so popular and have been on the market for decades. However once you've gotten used to pipe smoking your best bet is to go online to somewhere like Pipes and Cigars, read the descriptions and the reviews and see what sounds intriguing like it might be just what you want. Buy several different blends and sooner or later you'll find one thats just right. I have 22 different blends that I like to smoke as and when the mood takes me, the variety is what makes it so interesting to me but some folks like to find their favourite and stick to it, thats fine too.
my favorite pipe tobacco is carter hall but since they are discontinuing it, i am having a hell of a time finding a daily blend. but i smoke many different blends, i love nitecap and morning blend at night because there english blends. i also like velvet, captain black royal, half and half, and of course carter hall. it all comes down to your taste try different ones, if you find one like stick with it, or buy different ones and mix them all up and smoke it. most tobaccos reccomend blending with other tobaccos. ( that may not make since) just have fun oh and if your worried about "ruining your pipe" with all the different blends, here is a raptor pro tip buy a couple of corn cob pipes ( corn cobs run about 6 to 10 dollars U.S) and use them to test tobacco. hope that helps.
Thanks for educating me in pipe-smoking. I'm problably going to start pipe-smoking in 5/6 years but I like to know what I'll have to do then. Thank you again ;)
Great vid. I just found my new favorite at my local tobacco shop. They have a house blend black cavandish that is incredible. I actually have three pipes for different styles of tobacco as not to contaminate the flavor.
If you like the earthy blends make a 50/50 mixture of Spanish galleon and early morning pipe. Together they have a very earthy scent smells like being in the woods in the fall. Smells like the leaves on the ground turning to compost. The smoking of it has that campfire scent. The blend itself has been dubbed (by a friend of mine and myself as "Autumn campfire"
I find that drinking acid beverages (lemonade, cola, coffee...) can alleviate tongue bite, since it counters the alkalinity of pipe smoke. This could be an advice for people who constantly get tongue bite (besides the usual advices of smoking slowly and trying to avoid getting moisture in the pipe).
I'm a non-smoker, but I love the note of tobacco incorporated into fragrances (cologne) the two different fragrant aspects I love are of the humidor variant; the other is of the dried, or loose leaf tin can variant! It's all About the experience! I'm 10 years late but great video!
I just picked up pipe smoking in October, all I've had so far is 3 blends I've gotten from jars at tobacco shops for around 4 bucks an ounce. I have a friend that swears by the tobaccos you order offline, and I have to say I want to try!
My parents use the big bags of pipe tobacco to roll cigarettes because its cheaper. I've been watching these vids, it makes me wanna try pipe smoking with all of your descriptions of flavors and aromas lol, But...I don't have any proof that I'm over 18. I need to get an I.D. -_- I love the smell of vanilla smoke, its by far the best I've smelled/tried smoking.
Have you ever tried to make your own? I got some unflavored Virginia, and Carolina blended tobacco, big bag of it. I saw a website that had a recipe. I tweaked it a little. I poured half a cup of Jim Beam, in a measuring cup, poured in 2 table spoons of real Vanilla extract, and a table spoon of honey. It din't say how long it had to cure, so I am guessing 2 days.
Thanks for the video, I found it to be quite informative, and polite:) I've grown weary of smoking cigarettes myself, and smoking a pipe seems to have retained a sort of "gentleman's" quality which has never been inherent in cigarette smoking. It seems to be more nicotine-rich also, so it's possible you may smoke less tobacco over-all than with cigs, compare a bowl here and there with a pack or so a day, for example.
i like to make a mix of black Cavendish and latakia since the cavendish adds some sweetness and makes for a cooler smoke. also maple street is one of my favorite aromatics
ppl don't walk by a cigarette smoker and think yum That reminds me of the aroma of grandpa's house it always smelled so good. Cigarettes contain no tobacco the tobacco leaves are cooked in a giant pot with chemicals and a tea is made then sprayed onto a thin giant roll of paper then shredded and rolled into a cigarette. Cigars and pipe tobacco are leaves cut and shredded with different flavors some cigars are soaked in rum the fact that it's real tobacco and not this tea made to give you a nicotine buzz is what yer smelling when you smell a fine cigar or pipe tobacco. I don't think anyone smokes cigarettes for flavor they started young and the things used to make the spray gets you addicted like a crack smoker not because the smoke is relaxing or smells & taste good they smoke cigs to get that fixed. Cigarettes stink and stink up yer home car and clothes
Great Video!! I am not new into pipe-smoking; let’s just say becoming more of an adult in my preferences. Getting away from the corner-store pipe tobaccos’, will be viewing more. As always, thanks’ for taking the time to make this video! And I support this site. ~M~
You should do some more cigar videos. The humidor video was brilliant! Maybe a review on the cigars of your preference would be great to watch too? Keep up the good work Jeff :)
I prefer English Blends. Latakia works great for me. However if smoked right some aromatics are great as well. Virginias are good but if they are mixed with roasted Cavendish they are even better. I also find that the larger bowls are better for English blends for some reason. Pure burleys for some reason tend to give me tongue bite unless I take 2 hours to smoke a bowl. Every so often I need to put the pipe down and let it cool and then relight it more often than other blends.
I can tell you a pipe tobacco that is a must to try. It is called Criss Cross Black Cherry. It is a very smooth, sort of a cross between beach sand and lacquer thinner or Chemical Mace and Pepper Spray. Makes a great gift for someone you don't care for. I purchased it on the internet, which I now see was a mistake. I purchased a whole pound of it. I poured the stuff out in the yard. I sincerely hope I have not harmed the environment.
I got into disc golf a few years ago and am feeling the same with pipe smoking right now - overwhelmed - I'll never figure this out! Thanks for the video - one more piece in this 1000 piece puzzle. noir (black in French) nwahr. Like Guy Noir, Private Eye. Garrison Keillor. ??
Oh and Jeff, the cigarette smoke smell differs from what tobacco and papers are used. When i hand roll my john Silvers and use john silver papers, it gives off a low odour tobacco smell, not that burnt paper or burnt/bad blended tobacco smell :)
Hey Jeff, I smoked a pipe for the first time yesterday. In fact it was some maple street, like you have there. I got a lot of tongue bite though. I assume that it was partially because I was smoking it too fast, but I've also heard that Virginias can be harsh for beginners. Any advice you could give? Maybe a separate video entirely? :)
Thug life. Strangely enough, I love the smell of exhaust on motorcycles and old cars. Considering there's an almost new Sneaker shoe tobacco smell, what tobacco would you recommend that I may find interesting?
I find the peachy flavor of the peach of summer is over powering, covering the classic flavor of the tobacco itself. And many cherry flavored tobacco taste like cough drops! Although English mixtures are acquired taste, but over time I learn to enjoy them more than aromatics because of their consistency and overall classic taste. Rough cuts and freaks smoke less hot than ribbons. I am an extremely slow smoker, and I enjoy it that way better as I hate the burnt taste of smoking them fast and heavy. Nice introduction video to new smoker!
Hahahaha! xD I'm so glad I watched this to the end xD Aw man... I just realized I'll look at a picture of myself and my hookah and laugh someday... Great vid Jeff :) Thanks a lot.
Great video! I would say I can go both ways with tobacco fine. Have you tried Captain Black Midnight Gold? Or Bjarne Viking Odin's wind? What have you thought of them?
On another note about the smell, I have 2 cats and they cant stand the smell when I smoke a Cigg, but I recently started to smoke a pipe and not only can they stand it they seem to really enjoy it. While I watched this one of them jumped up and layed on my shoulder with his face only a few inches away from my pipe, and he is purring and doesn't seem to mind it at all.
Jeff, fuck the haters. It's your channel. You'll always see more hateful comments than supportive because most of the time, if someone dislikes something, then they voice their dissatisfaction. You should look at it like this; Do the views out number the negative comments? If so, then assume that all the people who viewed it liked the video. I enjoy all your videos, even the ones where you may goof off or do something new. People don't like change at times, but they get used to it. Peace.
Hey Jeff, was wondering if you have ever used the thunderbird inserts for your zippos. They are made for pipe smoking and have the hole on the side rather that the top!
Those Sutliff blends are intended to be substitutes for tobaccos that are no longer in production. For example, French Quarter is supposed to be a knock-off of Bourbon Street, which was originally called Bond Street.
I got a free can of Sutliff Balkan Luxury from an online sampler. I like latakia, but wow that stuff is intense. I agree about having to be in the mood for it. The weather affects my flavor mood; as you mentioned cool summer nights are good for latakias. I like sweeter blends during dryer weather. I live in Arizona, so humidity really has an effect on the smoking experience. Stokkebye 21 is my favorite, a lighter English style flavor with just a hint of vanilla and whiskey.
It's interesting that you went to knives for the comparison. I would've thought the best comparison would be tea. Theyre both made from leaves, that are dried, it's just whether you smoke or add to boiling water. There are so many different teas out there, I would've thought that would be the natural comparison
absolutely ridiculous that people are complaining... yes it's not good for you but it's on the Internet. it's not like he is handing you the pipe giving you peer pressure. there are worse things you should be worrying about. keep these up Jeff
cool good timing for the vid as I've been interested in buying some pipe tobacco to mix with hash. THe oldest tobacco shop in Canada is in my city..Al Capone bought things there and stayed in the hotel above it when he was running whiskey from seagrams distillery during prohibition.
I can relate. I was pretty disappointed when I first got my latakia. I put up with it because I want to finish it (3.5 ounces! Gaaahhhh!!!), but I really like Virginia blends. When I first got my latakia, my buddy took a whiff and said it smelled like barbecue sauce haha! You actually described how my friend and I work. He likes sweet, golden cavendish; I like Virginias. Latakia's good enough. I'm part English, so I guess that's something to take pride in haha. Thanks for posting!
As always , learn a lot from your videos, actually we kinda have the same hobbies... i followed your channel from Zippo, then to Balisong, knives(a bit) and now im starting smoking Pipe... anyways, Thanks!
I got into pipe smoking at 16 with captain black, then started smoking english blends when i turned 18. never expected the tobacco to taste like the flavoring.
I've been waiting for this video!! I will not touch cigarettes, but this stuff I don't mind. Even when I was in Egypt I really took to shisha, really good stuff
@sbl212 It doesn't need to be kept in a humidor, but it is best if is kept very slightly moist. It can be smoked after it dries out, but it won't be quite as nice a smoke. One trick my dad taught me was to keep it in an apothecary jar, with a slice of apple. The apple will keep it just right for a couple of weeks (but don't leave it in there too long or it will rot).
Here is my question. Is it wierd I am 18 and really interested in pipes. I've never ever seen a young pipe smoker. And I love to read and smoking a pipe seems like a very calming way to read a great book.
Lemme assure you, as long as you're legal, screw what others think of you. I prefer rolled cigarettes vs prepacked, which makes me "foreign" to the smokers I meet. What more pipe? Yet, I don't wish to care, as long as I enjoy it, so be it. I'm 25.
you mentioned that some people like the smell of pipe tobacco, when i was little my dad smoked a kinda 'mini' cigar that is cherry scented and flavored, and i always like the smell of that over cigarettes. swisher sweets i think they are called.
Hello cutlerylover, this is a really nice video, it got me a little bit confused with all these types of tobacco. there are so many! I stumbled into one of your video a week ago and the tutorials really got me. I was thinking that you may help me: A friend of mine ordered a pipe not so long ago, and since his birthday is coming closer I really want to give him a tobacco can as a present. Now, I only know he likes 2 kind of rolling tobacco: The Chesterfield blue, and the green Golden Virginia and, as I hope, you know better than me what choise suits him most. Thank you very much for your response.
@cslr11 Tobacco isn't necessarily what gives you cancer when you smoke. It's the chemicals found in cigarettes that are added specifically to increase addiction for repeat customers. While this tobacco can still cause cancer from repeated use, the risk is nowhere near that of a pack of cigarettes.
I tend to see the difference between flavored hookah and pipe tobacco as being similar to flavored vodkas vs whiskey. The one is much more focused on the fruit flavor or whatever, where the other is earthier and stays closer to its tobacco/alcohol roots. In both cases, the former tends to appeal more to the casual consumer, where the latter is often favorable for the experienced palate.
im a dipper, but i enjoy a good cigar every now and then, and it seems to me like the ones ive tried are very similar, i mean you can obviously tell the difference between a cheap philly or something and a very nice one
I usually breath in a little through my nose while holding the smoke in my mouth that way a small amount of smoke is inhaled but the majority stays behind. It really brings out some flavor that way too. Sometimes i inhale through the mouth until i feel the throat hit without sucking it all the way down.
greetings from lewistown, PA, your right about the cigs smells terrible and tastes terrible its simply about the nicotine and thats it, most of us started smoking cigs at early age simply "to be cool" or so we thought, i also remeber going to my grandfathers house and smelling the burning captain black, i think those memories are what led me to trying pipe cool vid
